The name "Buffy"

Hi everyone,

I am rewatching Buffy season 1 and a question just popped up. Was it ever explained onscreen the reason why she is named Buffy ?

😛 Maybe they want a name sounds cool and is different and goes with the name vampire slayer? 😛 😀
 
I always thought that it was meant to be ironic - you know, serious, dark job being done by teenage American high school girl...

cause joss said a couple of times that he wanted buffy to be a "real girl" like that typical teenager girl ...who is jus caring bout make up and boys and stuff....
 
When Joss first developed the whole Buffy concept it was in the early 1990's and at that time the Valley Girl thing was pretty big. I believe that's where the name hailed from.
 
Its a ...nickname for ppl who are named Elizabeth. I hadda think of the word, when pl call other ppl names that aren't quite their own...
i think i read somewhere that buffy meant consecrated to god....

i dunno if that has anything to do with anything at all but...found it interesting...he i could almost call my sister buffy....one of her middle names...other....that has fun possiblities...

buffy's a spin off of elizabeth which means consecrated to god, so a play on the whole crosses/holy water hurt the vampies?.....i dunno....thought it wouldn't hurt mentioning it tho so....i did....
 
No, she is not actually named Elizabeth. This is a fanon myth, there's nothing in canon that says such. Buffy was on her tombstone.

which i figured, twas just for the meaning really. i dun remember it being mentioned on the show, just somewhere.
i thought the whole consecrated to god thing was interesting.
 
Yes her name was Buffy, not Elisabeth. My friend's name is Cathy, which is usually a derivative from Catherine, but Catherine isn't her name.

Just like my birth certificate says Jenny, not Jennifer. 🙂

I was watching Fear Factor last Monday, and some woman was on and her name was Buffy, and her daughter who was competing (it was a parent and child episode), well her name was Riley!!!! LOL Buffy and Riley, do you think she's a fan of the show?
 
People don't always have their real names on their tombstones, my grandmothers sisters name is Katie but she has Kay on her tombstone cause that's what everyone called her.
 
In s5 Buffy was asking her mom if she had any nicknames for her like she has for Dawn (lil pumpkin belly) and Joyce said "no, you were always just Buffy" so based on that I would say her real name is Buffy. It is a real name, when i was a kid i went to summer camp and one of my counslors names was Buffy.

She was named Buffy because that's what her parents named her.

Wow. That is almost as good as the couple named Will and Tara on The Amazing Race. I watched the whole season cheering for them, and they lost on the final footrace. I was sad. 😀
 
Actually, I've looked up the name Buffy and the meaning stated "Bunny"

Then I thought...

Maybe thats why Anya hates Bunnies so much!

Yeah, I know a old lady named Buffy. If you ask me I think it's a pretty name.I don't know, I may name my baby Buffy when that time comes.
