The name "Buffy"

i dont think it was ever explained onscreen but im pretty sure its like Cordy said, cos of the whole valley girl thing and how joss wanted ppl to think she was just a dumb blond but shes actually a kick ass female 😀

Maybe it is because it can sound girlie and tough at some points. i was just watching some show and they were talking about how on the show 'family affair' there was some little girl named buffy. i dont know why i said that

Actually, I've looked up the name Buffy and the meaning stated "Bunny"

Then I thought...

Maybe thats why Anya hates Bunnies so much!
Yeah thats what I heard I had to laugh at that, Anya doesn't have a problem with Buffy though. LOL

I hear it was just to undercut the seriousness of Buffy as a Slayer. So situations such as this would happen:

GUARDIAN
I'm sorry. What's your name?

BUFFY
Buffy.

GUARDIAN
No, really.

Buffy shrugs

Anyway, I think its a good name, problem is you can never name a child that now without being called a loser fanboy/girl/person.

I found a really good one:

Buffy

With your charismatic personality and persuasive powers you naturally attract all the good things in life which you could want. Kind, generous and sincere you are a good friend and partner with strong attachments to home and family. You are ambitious and have sound business acumen, this together with a natural love of life ensures that you enjoy success financially and in your relationships.

*That last scentence is such a lie, look at her and Angel, or her and Riley.*

Buffy was picked because Joss went crazy and said in his very teenage way in a gym one day. "Hey I'm getting Buff lifting all these weights!". And a gay man called him Buffy :confused1

Is Buffy even a real name?

i'm pretty sure that it is... i think i even saw some real life girl with that name once on tv...

mr.pointy: me too.. i also thought that it was sorta ironic! just in the way you said...

Here's the web site of the next most famous Buffy I can think of - the native American activist and singer Buffy Ste. Marie (I believe she's also Canadian so I'll remember that for the next time I'm in the famous Canuck thread 😉)

mr. P: thanx for reminding me.. last time i posted on this thread i knew that i knew about someone who had the name Buffy in real life, but i had totaly forgot who! so thank you.. i even had about her in english in high school...

Joss had nothing to do with the name buffy. buffy the vampire slayer (the tv show) is based on the movie Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. that came out before the tv show. so since it is based on it or connected to it or whatever they used the name Buffy like it was in the movie

S'ok..we all learn something new everyday. Joss wasn't happy with the turnout of the movie...it was a lot more cheesy than he wanted it, thus Buffy became a series.

I'm still standing behind the notion that Buffy mean "bunny" which is why Anya hates bunnies. Because I mean she was a demon and if you look at what happens in Fray...

Hmm I still have to say I've never heard that Buffy means bunny, I mean when I see a bunny on the road I don't say "ohh lookit the cute Buffy!" 😀

As the fabulous Mr. P pointed out..Buffy is in fact a name, Buffy St. Marie being a GREAT example! So hats off to you Mr. P! 🙂
