Well they do add in a lot of science-y stuff as well with the satellites and The Doctor tapping into some field in order for the power of love to kick in so I thought that was a nice touch because it made the kind of sense that the science on the show does but it also had that magic element of the power of thought and stories.
I don't have an issue with The Doctor forgiving The Master because I think it speaks to The Doctor as a character, he struggles with the fact that he's commited genocide and he will go on to have to make tougher choices (like when he has to set off Mount Vesuvius and kill over 10,000 people). In the 10th Doctor's first episode he shows his extreme disapproval to Harriet Jones for killing the ship of aliens that planned to kill half the human race and sell the other half into slavery.
It's not the same as The Master but I think it gives The Doctor enough history that I don't wonder why he forgave The Master.
It's an example of why New Who just gets it wrong. It turns the Doctor into this annoying, god like figure that everybody goes on about being brilliant all the time, when again the whole point of him was that he was something of an under dog and unlikely hero in the original series.
One reviewer summed it up well with in the original, the Doctor as a quirky professor whose sense of adventure made him an unlikely hero. In the revival he is space Jesus.
Also sorry but the idea that Martha was able to convince everyone in the world to think of this guy that they'd never met and heard of before now at this exact one moment is stupid. Not to mention the OTT elements like the Doctor flying around, arms out ready to hug his mortal enemy.
Finally having the Doctor forgive the Master IS inappropriate. First of all within the revival never mind the original it makes no sense as in The End of Time, the Doctor happily sends his people back to be slaughtered, yet he has trouble killing this one asshole time lord? Kind of reminds me of this joke from the Simpsons.
"I don't get it Bart you got all upset when you killed one bird, and now you've killed tens of thousands and it doesn't bother you at all?"
Also given what the Master has done, even in the revival, killing billions and torturing his friends for a year, for the Doctor to HUG him is extremely inappropriate. It also makes the Doctor look like a xenophobic hypocrite. He tosses the leader of the Sycrocrax off a ship and says "no second chances", but to this asshole he gives him a cuddle?
Finally the idea that if the paradox machine is broken everything will just go back to normal is such a lazy, poorly thought out deux machina too. It's sadly classic Davies, of lets build everything up to the point where there is no realistic way to get out of it, so we'll just have one character become a god and magic everything away.
This video which is actually based on a real convo between a classic era and new who fan I think sums up my and others disdain for Last of the Time Turds LOL.
