The No Pop Music Thread

OK, nothing new to this forum here, but...do you guys have anything that really grabs you that's not pop/rock/hiphop/country, etc? Something classical perhaps...a snippet from a film score or a musical that you love. Or jazz, or maybe an obscure folk style or something. Give us a link, and maybe a little expanation if you want.

I'll start. I know very little about Classical, but I think simple solo piano is my favorite format for Classical music. Love Chopin, the Romantics in particular. Just about anything that's sort of melancholy.

And I really love Cool Jazz from the 50s/60s. Dave Brubeck was huge back in that era. He used unusual time signatures and had a brilliant saxophonist, Paul Desmond. Here's his tribute to Audrey Hepburn:

Aye- right off the bat I would say anything by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis.. they did the soundtracks for The Proposition as well as the Assassination of Jesse James. I think Proposition was a much better soundtrack, in fact I would call it a full blown album.

Well I've adored this classical piece since I first heard it when I was around thirteen or so as I was leaving a piano lesson. And I fell in love with it.

And I can be a bit of an Opera geek- hubby mocks me for playing it while I'm cooking and if he's not careful he'll get a scalded hand one day 😉- and I used to love Madame Butterfly until I saw Fatal Attractiion and I went off it for LIFE haha, and I had to find a new favorite opera. And so it ended up falling between Miss Saigon and Aida.

It's surprisingly hard to find clips from Aida on Youtube but I did find this one which does brief clips of each part- an opera in ten minutes it claims! haha

And then Miss Saigon. I defy anyone- well any woman- to watch this opera and not cry your eyes out. And this does have the bonus of being in English and since it's set during the Vietnam War it is a much more recent setting and many people find it so much easier to sympathize with and enjoy because of that I think. But I think it's the most romantic thing I've ever seen. And this was unfortunately the best clip of Sun and Moon I could find.

A very cultured group we have around here 🙂 It's gonna take awhile to sift through all this good stuff.

I got a couple more for now. There's this fairly obscure Danny Elfman score for Black Beauty that I really like. I've just heard excerpts on a compilation; can't find the album. Maybe an Irish influence in there?
