Joss Whedon wanted Britney Spears to play April The Robot (before Shonda Farr got the role), how would Britney play April? Could you see it?

Yeah I completely forgot about that. I read that in Bite Me: An Unofficial Guide To The World of Buffy, the first guide I ever got. I actually could see her playing the role, because it's not a role that requires anything, really.

word up...she can definitely play brain dead lol
OH. MY. GOD. REALLY? That would've been so AWESOME. I LOVE Britney Spears SO MUCH! I could totally see it too. I doubt there'd be much of a difference though. It was a pretty straight forward character. I liked the actress who ended up doing it though.

Yay! a Britney stan! <3 Joss also wanted Britney to be a vampire in Harmony's gang in season 5 but they chose Tom Lenk instead cause Britney was touring on several dates

I'm so glad she wasn't on the show.... I would have had to boycott the episode.

Same here, I mean I love the show but my respect would have plummeted a lot had this come to happen, so for me there's only relief that an actual actress got the part (although we did get a taste for what it might have been like when Ashanti guest starred later... ugh, I try to repress yet it doesn't work)

I don't think it would of worked because Britney was so famous at the time I think her addition to the show would have overshadowed the episode. I like Britney but I couldn't see her doing a very good job of it

I would have never stopped laughing if I saw fricking Britney Spears in Harmony's gang.

I do think Britney could pull off such character - a robot. But that doesn't mean she can act well, a part that isn't of a robot.

A vampire on the other hand.... well, that ain't a robot 😀

Yeah, it would have been really upsetting! One of the great things about the show was that they didn't have any ginormous names making appearances and taking the watcher out of the world they'd created. I mean SMG was very well known by some when the show started but she wasn't a mega star so it wasn't difficult to accept her in her role. John Ritter was sort of an exception to that but I don't think he was nearly as famous when "Ted" aired, and in any case, not as much as Britney.

Just the characters' names, I think, are a way for us easily get lost in the Sunnydale world. Uncommon names like "Buffy," "Willow," "Cordelia," "Angel," etc make it so that we don't think about for example, "the Buffy I went to school with" and can allow ourselves to concentrate on what's in front of us.

Well, a lot of people that you find famous like John Ritter or Ashanti are completely unknown in Italy and I think in rest of Europe. As was Sarah Michelle Gellar before Buffy!

I agree with Gum Gnome33... One thing I always loved about BtVS was that they didn't have a lot of "big name" guest stars on the show. I loved when John Ritter was on the show for "Ted", as I used to watch "Three's Company" with my dad when I was younger, but other than him I don't think they needed any more hugely famous people on the show.
I thought I was going to vomit when Ashanti was on during Season 7... Especially when I read in an interview that she "insisted" that they didn't put the regular vampire makeup on her face, 'cause she didn't want to be "too ugly".

Ashanti wasn't a Vampire, nor was she in s6.

I so love her. And I've never understood any hate for her. She's one of my favorite singers.

I've only seen her on How I Met Your Mother. And I must say that I think she could probably pull off playing a robot.

But it's basically a non issue for me.
If she had done it, so be it. Can't imagine it having any major impact. Neither for me or for the show.

Someday I'm gonna take the time to find out who this Ashanti person is that I keep hearing about though. lol

My bad, I put the wrong season at first...
But it doesn't matter what Ashanti played, 'cause I thought she was coming off in the interviews I read as a bitch. If they're going to get celebrities to guest star on shows, I just wish they'd at least get them because they want to do it or are fans of the show; not because they need/want publicity, which is what Ashanti seemed to want.

Anyway, getting this back on topic, I think Britney could have been believable as April the Robot, but again, I'm glad she wasn't on there. I'm not a fan of hers, and I would have been pissed off if they put her on the show just to have a "name" on there. It would have felt like nothing more than a sad ratings ploy to me.

I would have liked to have seen it. From what I read Britney's guest starring roles on other TV shows (forget which ones) were well reviewed. Plus she's playing a robot so it's not like she would have had to have been a great actress.

It might have been good for the ratings too. At the time of the episodes airing Britney was the biggest name in POP music.

She's nobody, really. She was a big R&B singer back in the early 2000's, and she had some big hits too. I find her songs catchy, and she actually has a few really great songs on her albums, if you're into that genre, but all in all not something to run home to your mom for. 😛

I really liked how the actress who got the part played her. I read about this while ago and just...no. I agree with whoever said that her stardom at the time would have overshadowed the episode completely. I can't see Britney playing a robot without her just seeming like a stupid girl.
