How different do you think that the original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie would have been if Joss' original script had been used, and he had been allowed to have some input (there's no way that he could have directed it back then) into the way that it was done?

For the sake of this discussion, assume that the same actors would have still been used, but with the "Joss spin" put on their portrayals.

Is there anywhere we can see the original script, to see how different it was compared to the finished movie?

The 1992 Buffy movie is so embarrassing and Kristy Swanson is a horrible actor. You guys know Seth Green plays a vampire in the movie?

I didn't watch the movie itself, but I read the summary and comments that Joss and other critics made of it.

I think the tone wouldn't have been so parody-ish and funny. It would've still had humour, but it would emphasize more on feminism, sending out an empowering message. And it would've had cool speeches.

(And Pike would have an 'S' added to his name and become a vampire. /shot)

For those in the UK who want to watch or re-watch the original film, it is on today at 7:20pm on Film4 🙂

If Joss had continued with the film it would have been a lot more serious, the action and humor would have been better as well.

I recently re-watched the movie, for the first time in years, and, while it certainly had its problems, it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered it being. Comparing it to Joss's script, I was surprised to see that the majority of his stuff was still in there.

The biggest problems were:

1. Donald Sutherland was an asshat and kept re-writing his lines and re-defining his character to suit his own taste. The producers were so eager to keep their big-name star happy that they let him get away with anything. All the nonsense about Merrick being an immortal being, the eternal "Watcher" who kept being re-born into every generation was his idea. They also changed his death scene all around.

2. Rutger Hauer's acting was terrible. I liked him in Blade Runner and Ladyhawke, but he was just terrible in this. Apparently he was also trying to hit on Kristy Swanson the whole time.

3. The deaths of the two main vampires -- Amilyn and Lothos -- were changed from the original script into much lamer, pretty much comical scenes. In the script, Amilyn was tricked by Buffy into thinking the sun was up (Joss recycled this in "The Harvest," where Buffy uses the same trick on Luke). In the movie, Buffy just stakes him and he does a comical Pee-Wee Herman style death scene.

In the script, Lothos had Buffy trapped against a row of lockers, and she grabbed a pencil out of one of them and staked him with it. In the movie, Lothos looms over Buffy with a dagger (I think), raises it two-handed over his head, and then pauses dramatically long enough for Buffy to kill him with the stake she was holding right there in her hand. In other words, this centuries-old Vampire King suddenly became so stupid that a five-year-old could have killed him.

Those were the big issues. But it wasn't all bad. Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry weren't nearly as bad as I thought I remembered. Stephen Root was hilarious as Gary Murray, the guidance counselor whose lectures keep veering off into reminiscing about his youth as a hippie stoner. The final conversation in the gym between Luke Perry and David Arquette's characters actually worked better than the one in Joss's script, I hate to admit.

If they'd avoided messing around with Merrick's character, left Amilyn and Lothos's death scenes the way Joss wrote them, and hired a better actor to play Lothos, it could actually have been a good movie.

Like a lot of Buffy fans I've seen it and think it's terrible. I have a copy on DVD but I thinkit's a dust collector! If they had used the same actors and scripting for the series it would've lasted one season (maybe). If Joss had had a hand in the scripting and casting it would've been a much better film.

I may have a different point of view here. I saw this first way before seeing the show and fell in love. NOw that I've seen the show I agree, the show is much much better. The movie is to me, now, a rough sketch and the show the final product....but I quoted this movie so freaking much in high school and I really loved buffy - the idea of her - intensely. And that came from the movie.

The movie as released was a high camp broad comedy with a trace of what we saw from the show. I assume that the hints of the show are what was left of Joss' script, but I haven't read it so I am just prejudging based on my fanboyism 🙂

Had Joss been more involved and/or his script more utilised then I think it would have been a much better movie as it would have been more like the show but with the campiness and broad comedy thrown in to help attract a more mainstream audience.

Here's a horrible thought, though. If the movie had been Joss' vision and it had tanked, he would never have been able to pitch the show for TV and our lives would all be very different :shudder:

Well, it would have been more like the show probably. A lot darker and more serious. The movie wasn't horrible though. It definitely would have been better though.

I LOVE the scene where Paul Reubans dies hahahaha.

I love the movie but I agree with everything AndrewCrossett said above, my biggest issue with the movie is definitely Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer, two actors that I normally really like.

I thought Kristy Swanson was good as Buffy, she captured her well especially in scenes as "You threw a knife at my head!" but sometimes the writing/directing/her performance was of very uneven quality and in parts of the movie she's just dreadful (for whatever reason is behind it)

I'm not sure what Joss would have done differently, he was pretty green then so I'm not sure his 'Joss touch' would have been what we now consider it. I'm sure he would have done a better job with Lothos and Merrick (even at the cost of the casted actors... seriously, for shame, why were they in this? Normally they're great and here... clearly not a good day at the office for either one of them. Too bad 'big names' are closely knit to the movie being made... )
