The Oscars

I was completely not surprised that Brokeback didnt take Best Picture. The Academy Awards are the most conservetive awards out there. That's why Tim Burton never wins. They nominate him and films such as Brokeback for face value but I believe they are never intended to win.

They're definitely biased against comedies, which never win anything. And, they tend to be biased against sci-fi and fantasy, LOTR being the massive recent exception. The Academy is lots of old retired folks as well as younger working professionals. A multi-generational crowd.

Many of the Silent generation and Boomer generation directors and actors are liberal to leftist, seems like to me. But...I bet there are actually a fair amount of closet social conservatives within the Academy ranks. Maybe that's partly why it's tough to predict what's gonna take home the big prize. (Also, lobbying, marketing campaigns play a huge role). Found this:

"It is almost the opposite of what people think," says producer Bill Mechanic, a former member of the academy board of the governors. "Organizations tend not to be on the cutting edge."

Recently, Tony Curtis declared on FOX News that he has no interest in seeing Brokeback Mountain and that his friends don't either. It's that type of sentiment that prompted Mechanic to tell Crash director Paul Haggis that he'd gone from a long shot to a potential winner.

As Maxim film critic Pete Hammond puts it, Crash might provide "a comfort zone for those who are homophobic."

Hammond thinks that this year's voting also makes a statement about how Hollywood feels about big-studio films. With the academy increasingly recognizing smaller, less-commercial films in the best-picture category -- four of the five best-picture nominees this year came from art-house labels, with the exception being Munich.

Hammond says, "The message they may be sending in general is that these are movies they're proud to give the Oscar to but they wouldn't make themselves. The message is, 'We're kind of ashamed of the movies we make.'"

I think a lot of the more recent big studio movies really are crap. All the smart indie flicks we see today are the kind of thing that would have been made by major studios, back in the 70s. But at some point, the big studios got into the international mega action blockbuster business"”and movies start to get dumbed-down when that happens.

And Miffed, you're so right about De Niro!

I've seen Crash, Brokeback Mountain, The Constant Gardener, Syriana, Pride & Prejudice and Walk the Line.

Breakdown:

Best Picture
I enjoyed Crash more, but Brokeback should've won.

Best Actor
I wanted Heath to win, though I felt Joaquin was excellent.

Best Actress
I didn't think Reese was that good. Keira was good, though.

Best Supporting Actor
I really wanted Matt Dillion to win.

Best Supporting Actress
Rachel was excellent.

Best Director
Ang Lee really deserved it.

Best Original Screenplay
So glad Crash won.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Knew Brokeback was gonna get it.

Finally saw the Oscars last night, realized I care not so much about who/what wins, I just like to watch the show with all the pretty people 😀
Anyways, I wasn't super surprised by anything and wasn't too disappointed by anything. Still haven't seen Crash but will in a few days, and expect to love it, mhm..
