Well, while everyone seems to be discussing who will play the Doctor when Tennent regenerates (looking very probable it being Paterson Joseph by the way) I thought I would open a thread about the equally important Companion position.

I have three possibles.

1) Genny (still refusing to spell it Jenny becase her name was born fron Generated), the Doctors Daughter.
This one is very plausible because although Steven Moffat didn't write her character in the series, he is the guy who saved her. Russells plan was to kill off Genny at the end of The Doctors Daughter but for some reason she was saved - could it be for the purpose of being a companion and having a new dynamic to the new Doctor Who Series?

2) River Song, Silence in the Library and Forrest of the Dead.
This is also very plausible for a number of reasons. River knew the Doctor BUT this was the first time he met her however the last time she met him. I think this definitely bodes well for a return AND the fact she knew his name suggests more than a couple of episodes. This is also added to by the fact that Steven wrote the magnificent 2 parter and again, it would be interesting to see Who do The Time Travellers Wife.

3) Sally Sparrow and Larry Nightingale, Blink.
This is my personal favourite. Sally Sparrow had ALL the spunk a companion needs and Larry was obviously a good character for the comic relief. The pairing would be great because this too would be a dynamic worth watching as it would, like Genny, take out a possible love relationship with the Doctor.
This is also an episode that Steven wrote so he knows the characters and could develop them PLUS we already have a story waiting - them travelling back to see Kathy Nightingale...wouldn't it be nice if Sally and Larry could be at the wedding?

4) Obviously there is equally as good a chance that it will be a completely new characters - who would you like, what kind of story would you like to see explored?

Now, lets assume Paterson is the New Doctor, of all the ones above Sparrow and Nightingale are the ones who fit him best, in my opinion.

Anyway, please vote and give our opinion.

Ohh I have given the option of Sally and of Sally n Larry because obviously some might not want both.

I personally think both would be better.

I don't think it will be River Song yet. She thought he was really, really young when she saw him in the Library, so I'm thinking she occurs farther in the future than just a few years. Especially since she thought him young at 900 and whatever.

As for a Companion, I'm not sure. I'm leaning toward Genny, though. I think that could prove really, really interesting...

I would like to see Sally and Larry back - I watched Blink last night on BBC3 and was reminded just how much I liked the characters.

That said, I think it's unlikely we'll see them.

I think it's more probable that it'll be Jenny, or a completely new character(s).

I voted for Sally myself as I think she'd make an excellent companion never mind a very good Doctor herself. But I doubt very much that there'll ever be a female Doctor - unless it's in a piece of fan fiction.

I'm going with other because for a new Doctor I want a new companion to start fresh and build new ties.

I did want to see Jack because well it is Captain Jack and I do love him. Can I nominate myself, I would make an excellent companion!

I really like your idea of Sally and Larry - and we need a regular male companion! Or you'd think the Doctor only ever really wanted something nice to look at...

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if we end with an entirely new character.

Oh, oh, I know who I want for the next companion - Captain John Hart 😀

I can't believe I forgot that! I've been fantasizing about that since my JM obsession started. That would be so much fun. And JM would almost certainly want to do it (ok, maybe not a full 9 months filming in Wales - he has his kids to think about - but a couple of guest stints would be feasible on his part at least)

Oh, oh, I know who I want for the next companion - Captain John Hart 😀

I think I may be the only one who would object to that. He ruined his Torchwood episodes so I don't want him to cross over and do the same to Doctor Who.

I think I really like the idea of a new companion, though I really liked Sally S. I agree that it is probably too early still for River, but I do think we're going to see more of her in the near future. JM as companion would absolutely kick ass, but it doesn't seem very possible, with him being very busy with family life and all. And I do think they're gonna stick with the female companions anyway. I have no clue, bu I can't wait to find out 🙂

Captain Jack as a regular Doctor Who companion, I don't like. He's Torchwood. That's a good place for him. I associate him with the campy Russell T Davies metro-sexual era. I don't think he'll fit with Moffat's Who - not on any kind of regular basis.

River Song, I don't think is the right chemistry for the Doctor Moffat proposes either. He says he's looking at an older Doctor. That can work with a young companion, or a group of young companions, and maybe even the K-9 type novelty companion, but if the 2 main characters are oldies it alienates the younger audience.

Sally Sparrow, I love. Throw in her boyfriend, no problem. Will Moffat do it? I doubt it.

Genny - great possibilities, but again I doubt that's the way Moffat will go.

New regular companions seems the most likely, but I wouldn't be surprised to see any of those mentioned above make appearances.

He may be Torchwood but he started off in Doctor Who and he is linked right through - lets not forget 'The Face of Boe'

Perhaps I phrased that badly. What I meant was I think Torchwood is a good place to cellar off the old campy, metro-sexual, Davies stuff so we can get on with whatever Moffat wants to do with Doctor Who.

So, now that we know who the New Doctor is, does this change the potential companion?

I personally don't think any of the names suggested would work with the New Doctor. Thing is, because he is so obviously young, I think the Companion should be a bit older...ohh how I would love Sarah Jane to come back on board🙂

New companions huh?

I think that the producers of the show have to think long and hard about whom they choose as a companion for the new Doctor (whom by the way, I've never ever heard of, nor seen on the goggle-box).

Perhaps they could use Sally Sparrow and her boyfriend (who's name I forget right now) from the Blink episode as they're in or around the new guys age group. Apart from those two, I couldn't really see anyone else that's been in the show previously as an up and coming companion - with the possible exception of the Doctor's daughter - but that'd probably be confusing for her more than anyone else.

As for Sarah Jane Smith - no, I don't think so. Whilst I like Elizabeth Sladen's character, I can't see her riding in the TARDIS again any time soon unless it's a tie in episode for her spin-off show.
