Been meaning to create this thread for ages.

The other kind of 'ship is "friendship", just to explain. So I was wondering what your favourite friendship on the show is.

I really like the Xander/Willow friendship, I love the closeness and the sweetness but didn't like them all lovey dovey. They're so great together and hey, it led to Xander doing the snoopy dance!
 
Xander and Willow I love, but also Buffy and Xander and Buffy and Willow. Sometimes three is a crowd though.

In Angel I loved the friendship that developed between Angel & Cordy. I know later they sailed off on another 'ship, but in S1 and 2 it's so nice to see the way they really care about each other.
 
Im a big fan of Buffy/Anya's friendship...I know they dont have a strong friendship...but...I just *love* the intereaction between the two...and Ive always wished they would've at least like...hung out once with one another...woulda been fun...

But...the ultimate friendship for me, is Anya/Tara...again...not *loads* of interaction, especially if you dont pay attention to the minor detail...but...its so much fun seeing them together...and...its more fun if you actually spot the little friendshipisms yourself...
Like...in Tabula Rasa, just before Willow and Xander come into the Magic Box...Anya and Tara are Thumb Wrestling 😀
 
In the earlier seasons I love the Willow/Xander friendship.. I love the way they act around eachother. (Willow says she can't talk to a guy, that's weird since she talks to Xander a lot and she is in love with him.. ok that's OT.)

When Willow and Buffy are good friends I like their friendship a lot.. But it's really not that often..

The funniest thing is definetly Willow/Anya, the two of them together.. heh. Like in Triangle and in Same Time, Same Place.

And then of course Faith and Buffy, don't know what to say. There isn't a relationship more complicated than theirs... I still call it a friendship cause I don't know what else to call it. Love it in every way although it's different in every episode..
 
I *always* wanted to post this thread and you beat me to it, Ashsan! 😉 My own fault.....

I liked Wesley and Gunn's friendship before Fred got in it. Spike and Fred seem to have a nice companionship in season five (as well as Spike and Illyria).

Willow and Angel, I always thought, seemed to be good friends.

Dawn and Andrew had some funny moments in season seven.

Like Lee said, Tara and Anya were wonderful together. I believe it was them who were stuck in a bathroom together once, admiring the tiles.

So many more.....my brain is so fried.....I can't think......
 
It's obvious that the most important friendship throughout the entire Buffy universe has been the Xander/Willow friendship. Heck, at the end of season 6, their friendship was the only thing that saved the world from being incinerated. That broken crayon speech was touching.

Now that I have laid that down on the table, my favourite is probably the Faith/Angel friendship. I guess Angel saw that he could relate to her, and made it his mission to never give up on her. Moving onto his series, her life became the perfect example of the shows(and the main character's) mission statement. Also, the Riley/Xander dynamic was nice, as well as the Willow/Giles friendship. That's another big thing about Buffy, and Angel isn't it. Most every other show I see out there, the characters are cardboard. The acting in Buffy is top notch, and it really compliments the superb writing. You really feel that these characters are friends to each other. That they spend time together. That's hard to do. I'm not so naive as to think that the actors on Buffy, and Angel are all friends, but I have noticed that a lot of the different actors do other projects with each other. Like Andy Hallet, Amber Benson, and James Marsters. And that translates over onto the screen I think.

Thumbs up to the Wander friendship, and Billow as well. But the one that stole my heart was Giles and Buffy. I know they had more of a father daughter thing going on, but they always made me smile. Very honest, very open.

Yes indeedy on the Buffy-Giles. I love their "chemistry" in Checkpoint.

This is odd. I agree with everybody. 🙂

I love the Willow/Buffy chemistry. Remember this scene from the end of Same Time. Same Place?

"Willow leans forward again, sighing, to begin meditating again.

BUFFY
I thought you were too tired.

WILLOW
It hurts too much not to try.

BUFFY
I'm sorry.

WILLOW
It just takes so much strength. I don't have that much.

BUFFY
I got so much strength, I'm giving it away.

WILLOW
Are you sure?

BUFFY
Will it help?

WILLOW
Much.

Buffy sits cross-legged in front of Willow and holds her hands. They meditate together.

BUFFY
Good."

I love the Buffy/Giles connection too. Did you ever notice the chemistry between Sarah and Tony when they do those scenes. She just looks deep into his eyes, and hangs on his every word, like God is speaking to her alone.

Remember this one:

"Buffy: You must be so disappointed in me.

Giles: No. (she looks at him) No, no, I'm not.

Buffy: But this is all my fault.

Giles: No. I don't believe it is. Do you want me to wag my finger at
you and tell you that you acted rashly? You did. A-and I can. I know
that you loved him. And... he... has proven more than once that he loved
you. You couldn't have known what would happen. The coming months a-are
gonna, are gonna be hard... I, I suspect on all of us, but... if it's
guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm, I'm not your man. All you will get
from me is, is my support. And my respect.

Buffy smiles at him through her tears."

The Faith/Angel thing is kind of fascinating too, not just for what happens on the screen, but don't you get the feeling they've been visiting, and writing in jail, and creating a bond.

I feel sorry for Wesley. I don't know if it's just me, but I get the feeling that with the possible exception of Fred, and the casual connection to Cordelia, Gunn and Angel, he never really had a real friend.
 
Wes had quite a strong friendship with Gunn but that was torn down. And I would say he had a friendship with Angel but also torn down (nearly at the same time actually).

Willow and Buffy are really sweet, just walking down the street holding hands in Hush was so simple yet showed their friendship.
 
I love Wesley's character. Him and Giles did probably the hardest things in all the Buffy-verse only for the reason that they had to be done. Giles killing Ben because Glory might come back to haunt the group, and put the world in peril. A character that was good, and only wanted to live who's only curse was that he shared a body with someone evil. Buffy's killing Angel is a little different. It's fairly black and white. You know that the only way to close the portal was to kill Angel so it had to be done. Buffy beat Glory, and there was only the possible threat of her coming back to hurt Buffy...well...probable threat. It's more of a grey area the killing of Ben. And Wesley stealing Angel's baby cause he believed that was the only way to save it. He was doing the only thing that he thought was right, and it meant stealing a baby from a loving father who could never have a child ever again. I guess that's what kind of isolates those characters a bit. They do things that have to be done no matter how they appear on the surface, and most the other characters just do what is good.
 
That's so true, like look at Lies My Parents Told Me. When Giles conspired with Wood to kill Spike he had to know it would jeopardize his connection to Buffy, nevertheless he felt it had to be done, and he had to be the one to do it, so he did and of course...Buffy rejects him.
 
I think really, Buffies weakness lies in her friends. They are pretty much the key to beating her. She couldn't kill Spike even though she knew he was a threat to everyone, including her. It's a double edged sword though. Remember at the end of season 4, if spike had truly seperated them, and lured Buffy down into the initiative without them...well she woulda been dead, and an army of cyborgs would rule the earth. Her friends give her strength.
