The Pack

Aired: April 7, 1997
Writers: Matt Kiene
Joe Reinkemeyer
Director: Bruce Seth Green

Bloopers:

- When Willow is watching the hyena footage on her computer in the library, most of the footage of the animals tearing at a carcass is actually of African wild dogs, not hyenas. Only the close-up footage initially is hyenas.

- When Buffy picks Herbet the mascot up and walks with principal Flutie the 'razorback' is tied on by string, yet when they go to enter the room with his cage in it, the string has disappeared and the 'razorback' is lying against Buffy's chest.

- When Buffy returns to the library dragging an unconscious Xander, a deadbolt can be seen on the right-hand library door. It was not there when she left.

- The Hyena exhibit is a very dangerous design. There is no guardrail or similar barrier to keep visitors at a safe distance. Anyone can walk up to the bars and get mauled, as the bars are wide enough for people to stick their arms or legs through. In fact, the bars are so wide apart that not only could skinny people or children squeeze completely through, but the hyenas could simply walk out of their exhibit.

Best quotes:

- Giles: "Xander's taken to teasing the less fortunate?"
Buffy: "Uh-huh."
Giles: "And, uh, there's a noticeable change in both clothing and demeanor?"
Buffy: "Yes."
Giles: "And, well, otherwise, all his spare time's spent lounging about with imbeciles?"
Buffy: "It's bad, isn't it?"
Giles: "It's devastating. He's turned into a sixteen-year-old boy. Of course, you'll have to kill him."

- Buffy: "What is it with those guys?"
Willow: "They're obnoxious. Professionally."

- Giles: "Testosterone is a great equalizer. It turns all men into morons."

Soundtrack:

- "All I Want" - Dashboard Prophets

- "Reluctant Man" - Sprung Monkey

- "Job's Eyes" - Far

References:

- "Oh great, it's the winged monkeys." Winged monkeys were the servants of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.

- "I can't believe you, of all people, are trying to Scully me." Dana Scully is the skeptical doubter who consistently tries to poke holes in the wild supernatural theories of her partner Fox Mulder on The X-Files.

Trivia:

- Other than Kyle, the individual members of "the pack" are never named in the episode. However, TV Guide credited Brian Gross as "Tor" and Jennifer Sky as "Heidi". And in the scene with the Anderson family, the closed captioning for the episode reads "Rhonda singing softly".

This is probably my favorite Season 1 episode... The bloopers are awesome; never paid attention to those before, but I will now. 😀

I might have to make a banner with Giles' testosterone quote on it... 😉

One of my favorite eps of the season. Perhaps my 3d fav.

However, I've come to the conclusion that whoever makes the IMDB entries has entirely too much time of his/her hands.

I loved seeing evil Xander, he was pretty convincing. My favorite scene, even though its cruel and evil, was the whole gym class part.

I might be the only one, but this episode is one of my least favorites of season one. Plus, I really liked Principal Flutie and Snyder was annoying to no end lol

You are not the only one :))
Nice that someone else caught the hyenas/wild dogs blooper. Kind of reminds me of those old movies and TV shows set in the African jungle, like Tarzan, that have animal footage of non-African animals, like Asian buffaloes and elephants instead of African ones. There's one Tarzan movie called "Tarzan and the Amazons." Its not a bad movie-I recommended it to the Xena fans on another board I belong to. But it has photos of American white-tailed deer and Canada Geese in it- in what is supposed to be the wilds of Africa.
In Africa, there is the belief in were-hyenas, just like the European belief in werewolves. Since there are no wolves in Africa, the hyena takes their place. Robert E. Howard wrote a story called "The Hyena" with this theme.

The Pack is probably my favorite episode out of all 144 (well maybe next to the obvious epys like Hush, OMWF, and The Body), and I've probably seen it the most out of any, but I've actually never noticed any of these... Thanks for the random facts. 🙂

I'm a little annoyed at this episodes, to be honest. It's quite interesting to see Xander possessed and students eating Mr.Flutie is always incredibly creepy but overall, I don't have strong feelings about this one, it's just an episode.

I just finished re-watching this and man it made me hate Xander so much lol. I know it's not really him but he was such a dbag! I always feel sad for Willow when he hits her with the dodge ball and then he later tells her how he never wants to see her pasty face again 🙁 poor Willow

Also, did anyone else notice this:
After Buffy picks up Herbert, and Xander walks in, did you not think of Edward in Twilight and how broody and gross he looks, and how his clothing resembles Edwards? lol idk it was the first thing that came to mind

Does it bother anyone else that the hyena in the exhibit looks more like a bear than a hyena? I've seen hyenas in real life and I've seen bears and that was a bear. I do enjoy this episode... But that always bothers me.

lmao! I thought the same thing. and I always thought that the set was so unrealistic(just like PBsaid above). Who would put bars instead of plexi glass? seriously. and it was so low too. a hyena could have easily jumped out and bit someone lol

This is one of my favourite season 1 episodes. Much better than Teacher's Pet. That was just WEIRD! 😀

I really like this episode and Nick Brendon was excellent in it but the only scene I dont like is the one when he attacks and even almost tries to rape Buffy in the classroom. Not all in his control but he did remember it at the end so makes you wonder?

Speaking of... are there any other Spuffies or die hard Spike fans who always get mad like "Xander, you attempted to rape Buffy too!"
