I'm a big fan of the background stuff. As such I'll rewind and view any scene with a Potential in it over and over again. I'm alway trying to peg their personalities. I'll post what I've got so far. Tell me if you think it's accurate, or you can add to it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Annabelle:
What you see on the surface isn't necessarily what you get. She appears competent, informed, and trusting in the power structure.

One layer below the surface though, you have a scared kid who's not sure the people in charge can help her.

Molly:
Poor Molly. Clutzy, voracious, not that bright, good heart. She likes a laugh and a juicy bit of gossip. She's only tolerated by the rest of the group, but oblivious to their bare tolerance of her. She'll joke. They'll sigh and walk away. She'll follow and be amiable. She just doesn't get that they'd prefer she was elsewhere. She just thinks it's part of the game.

She puts total trust in Buffy, believes everthing the slayer says, and would cheerfully follow her into Hell. If Molly had been around when Dawn kicked Buffy out of the house Molly would have followed Buffy, and just assumed that's where she was supposed to be.

Unfortunately, of all the potentials Molly is probably the least competent.

Rona:
Rona is like Annabelle in that the front she shows publicly is not what you find one layer down.

Her public face is one of cynicism and distrust of authority.

She appears to be a bit of an ingrate, but really she's just scared. She wants to appear tough, but it manifests itself by making her seem kind of disagreeable.

She has what I've heard called "short people's syndrome". She over compensates for what she fears others might interpret as weakness, by openly appearing to be willing to fight.

Luckily for her she's also tough. She can fight past her own pain and deliver some.

Chloe:
Chloe's the kid of the group. She doesn't fit in, but she doesn't have Molly's blissful ignorance. She knows she's not one of the group. She tries to measure up, but she just can't.

She's sensitive, and her sensitivity can be manipulated.

Vi:
Vi comes to the group a total misfit. She dresses goofy, acts goofy, but is anxious to belong.

I think she's probably the kind of person who just doesn't fit in with the real world, but would like to. Her history up until coming to Casa Summers is probably one of being ostracized from every group she's been a part of.

She's different from Annabelle and Rona though. They show the world a mask of strength, and wear their weakness inside. Vi is different. She appears the goof on the outside, but inside she's all strength.

Vi could probably kick Amanda and Kennedy's collective asses.

When Vi comes to Sunnydale and sets about the business of training to become a slayer she finally finds something she's good at. Episode by episode she begins to find confidence.

I used to think Vi only discovered power when the scythe activates the slayer within in Chosen, but that's not true. Watch her in the background in End of days. It's not the same geeky girl in the goofy hat we were first introduced to.

Also I don't know why, but I think Vi and Rona have bonded. I think they're friends.

Caridad:
Caridad is one of these types who the opposite sex is just naturally drawn to. She'd prefer that wasn't the case. It makes her uncomfortable. Nevertheless that's just the way it is.

She's quiet, withdrawn, competent, and can be relied on. She's one of those types that is alone even when she's in a crowd. She's deep.

Amanda:
With Amanda it is strictly what you see is what you get. Once you get to know her, she is what she is.

She's the kind of girl you might see as a misfit, and expect to get picked on at first meeting, but you'd quickly find out there's a line you don't cross with her. She's fearless, and tough. She probably doesn't do well in school, but she has real world smarts.

Kennedy:
I'm going to pass on Kennedy, because it would just start trouble. Let one of the Kennedy lovers do her.

*

OK. Now believe or not, I can actually offer support for most of this. I didn't put it forward, because it would get too long, but if you want support on a particular item, just ask.

There's five letters to describe Kennedy, I'll let you chose which ;)

I left that in, because I wanted to see who'd get it. I should have known.
nerd4hire agrees: I left that in, because I wanted to see who'd get it. I should have known.
...and just when everyone thought I was witty, urbane and sophisticated, my puerile sense of humour let me down again 😉

You get it all Mr. P. You're an equal opportunity humour afficionado.

We need you around here. Who else could interpret the wry and cryptic wit of members like Faldor for us. 😀

I aim to please - and bless you for noticing :)
Damn, and you know as I was typing that I was saying to myself I know I'm going to get one of these names wrong, because that's the kind of mistake I often make. I mix up names.

I sat there, and I stared at the names of Annabelle and Chloe until I was sure they were correct. It never occurred to me I might get Caridad wrong, because I've talked about her so many times before. You ever have that happen to you when you're trying so hard not to screw up, it's enevitable you're going to.

Oh well I'm going contact a mod, 😀 and have the mistake edited so I don't look a total jack-ass.

I tend to do that a lot. I'm the type of person who when someone is talking to me and I'm trying to write something, part of what they're telling me goes into my typing 🙂

Vi could probably kick Amanda and Kennedy's collective asses.

I doubt it very much. I even doubt that Vi could kick Rona's ass. Vi became very popular with a lot of fans, because she toughened up at the end for the final battle. And the fans loved that. But we don't really know for sure who was the toughest new Slayer. Or the best fighter. We do know that Kennedy was the most experienced.

Kennedy was the oldest and most experienced of the Potentials. She also came from a wealthy family. Yes, she was very aggressive and perhaps a little too self-assured. Frankly, she reminded me of Buffy and Faith, and how they had treated Wesley in Season 3. Kennedy did not accept authority readily. For that, I respected her. If you want her respect, you had to haul ass and work for it. And like she had told Willow, she could be a bit of a spoiled brat. But once you had Kennedy's love or friendship, she was very loyal. And she also possessed a great heart. This was very apparent in "The Killer in Me". But most of the fans were so turned off by her aggressiveness that they failed to notice.

Vi toughened up, before the final battle.

They all did. All of them. If that's the case, what makes Vi so special? She got over her insecurity, yes. But Rona got over her fear. Kennedy finally faced the fact that she can be too aggressive . . . and the others got over their own fears to help. They're all special.

Ok, I agree that all the Potentials really stepped up to the plate (Ha!). I even agree that Kennedy is highly underrated. But I see absolutely no evidence that Kennedy realized how abrasive she is, or even that she cared. I didn't see Kennedy handing out respect to anybody. She didn't respect Buffy, Giles, Faith, or even Willow....Sorry, got on a little Kennedy rant there...

But I do agree that I'd like to see the evidence for your assesment of Vi, n4h, mostly because I probably just didn't notice it 😉

If you knew that, why did you say "Vi became very popular with a lot of fans, because she toughened up at the end for the final battle." It insinuates 2 things. First that it's true, and second that that's the only reason anyone could like VI. Both insinuations are incorrect.

Edit:

Oh and Anchovy, I'm on it. Give me a day or so.

Then watch "Chosen" again, when she and Willow are having a conversation in the Principal's Office.

Kennedy is not my favorite Potential, but I get the feeling that many want to demonize her and at the same time, put Vi on a pedestal. All of the Potentials had their weaknesses and strengths.

What do you mean by evidence of my assessment of Vi? All I had stated that Vi had overcame her insecurity and toughened up for the final battle. Why do I need to provide evidence for that?

Why should any of the Potentials automatically respect Buffy, Giles or any of the Scoobies because they're experienced demon fighters? The Scoobies - especially Buffy and Giles treated them like conscripts for an army. Which was the same way how the Watcher's Council treated Buffy and the other Slayers. Are you saying that Buffy's attitude toward Wesley and the WC was wrong and disrespectful?

And remember this - ALL of the Potentials had rejected Buffy in "Empty Spaces[or Places]", not just Kennedy. Kennedy and Rona were more verbal in their rejection of Buffy, but not one Potential sided with Buffy . . . including the celebrated Vi.

1st off, I'm currently on End of Days. I rewatch things in sequence, so I have a context for my judgements. I might have to get back to you in an hour or so, when I get to Chosen.

Secondly, I don't much care one way or the other about Vi. I mean, I like her, because I think she's cute and goofy, and she kind of reminds me of me. But I wouldn't say I put her on a pedestal. I admit that I do tend to dislike Kennedy, mostly because i think she's a disrespectful brat, but hey. That's just my opinion of her personality. As a Potential and possibly as a Slayer I would agree that she is the most experienced and the best trained, and possibly the best fighter.

Third, I wasn't asking for evidence of your assesment of Vi. I was asking n4h.

And yes, the Potentials should respect Buffy. And Faith. And Giles. And Xander. And Willow. Because each of them has made sacrifices in order to keep these girls safe (some of them in blissful ignorance that they were even in danger). I'm not saying that Buffy's treatment of the Potentials was right or justified. I'm not even sure whether the Scoobies and the Potentials were wrong in Empty Places. But I am saying that it's not necessary to automatically question authority the way Kennedy does. Her absolute first assesment of Buffy is one of disdain. And that's unnecessary. She never even gave Buffy a chance, despite the fact that she must know that Buffy's been doing what she does for a good long while. Buffy rejects the Council after they make decisions that are unbearable in their disregard for her safety. The Potentials do the same thing in Empty Places. But Kennedy goes out of her way to buck Buffy's authority from the beginning.

And no, Kennedy is not the only one to reject Buffy. But as I've said before, I'm not sure they were wrong. I think the only blameless person in this scernario is Chao-Ahn. In fact...she might just be the bravest person there. She doesn't understand what they're all talking about...but she goes into battle anyway 😉

One, I don't mind if the Potentials admire the Scoobies for fighting evil all of those years. But those girls were never given the choice (until "Chosen") on whether or not they should help Buffy fight the First Evil. And that does not give Buffy or the others the right to treat those girls as conscripts in some army. If it was wrong of the Shadowmen or the Watchers Council to treat the Slayers as conscripts, why should Buffy have that right?

If you're going to castigate Kennedy for treating Buffy with disdain upon first meeting her, why don't you do the same to Buffy and Faith who treated Wesley with disdain when they first met him back in Season 3? And this was upon their first meeting. Or Buffy, who treated both of her Watchers with disdain when she first met them?

Why should Buffy and/or Faith get away with such attitudes and not Kennedy?

If you knew that, why did you say "Vi became very popular with a lot of fans, because she toughened up at the end for the final battle." It insinuates 2 things. First that it's true, and second that that's the only reason anyone could like VI. Both insinuations are incorrect.

I still have fresh memories of how the Jossverse fans mooned over Vi, after "Chosen" aired. Suddenly, she was everyone's favorite new Slayer. I had once pointed out that Rona had joined Buffy in the final battle, while she had one arm in a cast. The only response I had received from that remark was that it was too bad that Rona's other arm had not been broken. Apparently, she had not been forgiven for that caustic remark about Buffy in "Empty Spaces". Vi, on the other hand, was the new ME darling.

I agree that these girls were never given a real choice. Some fans say that they could have left at any time, but "stay here, help us fight evil, or go back out there in the world and be killed by Bringers" really isn't a choice. But was there a single girl in Chosen who protested? Who walked out and said, "do what you want, I'll have the power to protect myself, but I'm not going to help you today"? And the issue of Buffy treating the Potentials the same way the WC treated her is exactly why I say the Scoobies and the Potentials may have been right in rejecting her in Empty Places. She was making decisions which they felt were unbearably ill-informed and dangerous. Maybe their plan wasn't right (after all, it led to a bunch of them being blown up) but maybe they were right in the decision to let Faith lead.

Well, I do. I mean, sure, Buffy's beloved Watcher who had been with her through her trials and tribulations as the slayer, her own death, who had forgiven her and put up with her for leaving her post after she killed Angel, who had become a father-figure to her, had been fired and the last person who claimed to be Faith's new Watcher had tried to kill them. But sure, she was disrespectful to Wesley. In fact, she kept being disrespectful to him. And hey, Kennedy and Season Three Buffy aren't really all that different. I mean, Kennedy's Watcher was killed by Bringers. But we weren't talking about Buffy in Season Three. The topic of this thread is potential Slayers. So I addressed my problems with Kennedy, not my problems with Buffy.

And yes, a lot of people really like Vi. I do. And yes, maybe some of Buffy fans make the mistake of putting her in a "higher" or more favored light than the other former Potentials/now Slayers. But that's no reason to disregard her character, just because other people see her strength too.

BTW, you're right about Rona. So Rona with her broken arm and Chao-Ahn with the language barrier kicked butt on that day. 😉 But the cast kind of magically appeared and disappeared during the fight...hmmm.

Guilty. 😀 I confess. I was among the first and loudest of the Moonys over Vi after Chosen. In fact as long as I'm coming clean, here's an old poll; so old we were spelling Vi's name wrong -

Who's Your Favourite Potential.

I don't know if she was "everyone's favourite new slayer" though. You'll notice Amanda murdered in the poll.

But getting back to Vi in Chosen. I don't know why only 5 of us chose Vi as our favourite after that episode. She was wild.

Remember when she first got enraptured by slayer power. She was looking down at the horde of Turok Han storming their position, and she said, "Those guys are dust".

Or remember her pulling the Turok Han off Buffy when it stabbed her.

That red hair was everywhere in the cave, and everywhere it went, there was Vi kicking butt. It was such a radical metamorpisis from the goofy, frightened girl in the frayed toque who first turned up sitting on the Summers living room floor trying clumsily to make friends.

Oh and you're not a guy so you probably won't get this one, but...Vi in tight blue jeans = smokin HOT. :firedev:

OH I get it.... n4h, you are so perceptive.... Tight blue jeans are a deciding factor in my books too :P
OK Anchovy, I finally got around to finding the support to the Vi character profile you requested.

Here's the thing though I think rather than attempt to offer proof for anything I've said before, I'll simply offer my notes on an ep by ep observation of what Vi does. Any opinion I have as to what the information means is only my opinion.

My real point in offering this stuff is to suggest it's possible to get a feel for the characters of the Potentials from the incidental stuff we might not notice on first viewing, like this...

VI CHARACTER NOTES

Showtime:

Vi first turns up laying on the floor in a sleeping bag on the Summer's living room floor. She, Choe and Eve are laying there looking up at Molly who's telling the story of Annabelle's death.

Her hair is cut in a style I could best describe as something a teenage girl's mother might want her to wear.

When they are discussing the rough shape Buffy is in after her fight with the Turok Han Vi says, "No lie, she still looked like a big bruise when I got here, and that was already like the day after".

I'm going to say my first impression of Vi is of a girl who is sheltered in some way from the real world. The hair-style suggests to me she's not spending time in the real world of teenage girls, and the bruise comment suggests she doesn't understand how the real world of slayers works either.

* The next scene we see of Vi possibly contradicts this though, because we learn she did have a watcher at one time, so she does have at least some background slayer info available to her. She is the only one who seems to know there is possibly another slayer.

* When they are training in the basement she is dressed garishly in a gaudy bright striped sweatshirt, and red pants. She also wears one of the dorky woolen hats that will become her signature in the next few episodes.

When she offers the information that she's seen a vampire, it almost seems to be an effort to appear special, but then she has to admit it was just a faded picture of a vampire.

To me this suggests she's anxious to belong to the group, plus she's basically honest.

* Later when they are sitting around the dining room table trying to decide what to do Vi says "we should run". She's scared, but not Annabelle style scared. She's not panicked to the point she's going to do something stupid. She doesn't say, or quietly think to herself "I should run". She says out loud "we should run". Whatever she does from here on out, she wants to do as part of the group.

* When the Turok Han attacks, Vi does 2 things she will continue to do right up to the final few episodes. She clutches her weapon to her chest with both hands in a frightened and useless way, and when they go anywhere Vi will always trail the group, just as she does in this episode when they run.

Potential;

In the teaser the potentials are in the cemetary, training. Vi and Rona are being stalked by Spike.

Rona is in the lead. She one-hands her stake, and swivels her head as she looks around. Vi follows. She has her stake in both hands at her chest. Her head is frozen in place, and her eyes dart about. She seems content to let Rona lead, and simply follows.

The body chemistry suggests this is the Vi and Rona relationship. Rona in charge. Vi following.

Vi is wearing her geeky, faded but brightly coloured, moth eaten toque.

Molly stands by Buffy taking notes.

* When Buffy gives the speach in the basement, Vi and Molly are laughing and giggling, enjoying each other's company.

* Buffy walks in on Andrew, Xander Vi and Rona arguing. It appears to be Vi and Rona vs Xander with Andrew in the back as referee. The Vi and Rona chemistry appears to be the same as it was in the cemetary, with Rona in charge and Vi following.

* Vi, Rona and Molly are in the kitchen looking at weapons, getting ready to go out training. Vi calls it an outing she seems real excited. She really seems to be enjoying herself, and her attention is completely rapt on everything going on around her. Rona seems to be taking control of the group with forceful opinions. When she starts talking about a stake Vi looks up at her like her opinion matters, and she is taking little mental notes.

Molly is just goofing.

* When they enter the demon bar Vi seems to pair herself with Molly. Rona with Kennedy. Molly and Vi are jazzed, and anxious to experience. Rona and Kennedy stand in the back and make snide comments.

* When they walk into the crypt Spike and Bufy lead. Rona and Kennedy follow. Molly and Vi trail. Vi is doing that 2-fisting her weapon thing, head frozen, eyes darting back and forth. When Buffy leaves them alone with the vampire, Kennedy's look is determined. Vi is frozen in fear.

* Later when the girls are at the Summer's house discussing the fight it turns out Vi told the Vampire, "We're just helpless girls". It's worth noting Vi was unhappily surprised at the beginning of the episode that Spike would hurt her arm. When they were in the bar Vi didn't know what to make of the fact the demon wanted to eat them. She could only say, "I didn't like him." She is being confronted with the hurt that can be offered in the real world.

Vi seems to be coming out of a protected environment where nothing actually gets close enough to hurt her. It's a big surprise to her that anything could or would.

When it came right down to the nitty gritty though, and she got into the middle of the actual fight she hurt the vampires arm. It's interesting that it's the arm. Spike hurt her arm. Is she learning?

* In the living room scene Vi is starting to look kind of cute; cleaner, better fitting clothes, self-respecting and self-assured.

Killer in Me

* Vi leaves stuff laying around. When she first turned up in Showtime and Potential she was a bit of sloppy dresser. Vi might be a slob, or perhaps she's just used to having others pick up after her. Perhaps this goes back to the protected thing. Perhaps she's over-mothered.

Get it Done

* Vi likes to wear red.

* Vi looks physically co-ordinated, and capable while martial arts training, but her face portrays fear of getting into trouble from Kennedy. She still appears to lack confidence.

* During Buffy's death of Chloe speach, there's a part where she says "You wanna suprise the enemy. Surprise yourself. Force yourself to do what can't be done." At that point the camera finds Vi and 2 other girls. Vi's eyes are wide. She's hanging on every word. Earlier in the scene she seemed a little scared of Buffy, now she's just enthralled.

Touched.

* Vi no longer wears her goofy toque, and dorky outfits. Her appearance changes here from goofy to slovenly, yet comfortable.

* She's found her own voice now. She doesn't simply follow.

"Please don't mention Parliamentary procedure" she says to Amanda.

* Caridad seems anxious, and a little frightened, as the girls seek to organize without Buffy. At one time that would have been Vi. Not now.

The old Vi is still there though. The lights go out just as she is trying to sooth everyone by telling them things will be better in the morning.

The next thing we hear is Vi's voice saying, "I think I'm starting to freak out."

She's on the border now of the frightened geek she was, and the healing protector she will become. In one scene she's talking about not wanting to die. In the next she's walking into the bringers basement, no longer clutching her weapon to her chest. Now she's one-handing her sword, strategizing where the enemy is.

* This is the first time we see Vi fight, and it turns out she's pretty good at it. She's not stumbling and bumbling like Molly was in the wine cellar in Dirty girls. Vi is co-ordinated, and capable of attack, or finding the counter-move to a wrist-lock.

"Is that it", she says after the fight, "not that it wasn't fun, but..."

There's no fear as she's looking around for the next fight. It's all alert, yet cautious anticipation.

End of Days

* When Amanda and Caridad find Vi in the blown up basement her arm is jammed in rubble. When they ask her if she's OK, she replies she thinks her arm is broken. She is helped to her feet, looks around, sees a dead potential, and says she thinks she's lucky.

We are starting to see an emergence of a Vi that concerns herself with the fate of others, even above her own personal tragedies.

* Also it's worth noting Vi's injured arm the next time we make too big a fuss about Rona's. Vi's not faking it, because she's nursing her arm the whole scene. When Kennedy brushes up against her she winces, but makes no sound.

* When they climb over the rubble, Vi is the last one over. An Uber-vamp grabs for her. She squeals, but she doesn't lose it. She is still standing alert shoulder to shoulder with the other girls when they decide to fight, favouring her injured arm.

* When Kennedy tells them all to get back, Vi grabs another slayer with her good arm, and moves her back.

* In the scene where Buffy jumps down through the ceiling to save them all the camera pans the potentials for reaction. Vi seems the least freaked. It's a reaction that's more trying to figure out what to do next. Amanda is freaked. Kennedy is rubbing her neck confused that she could actually be hurt. It's the same expression she had when she realized Willow's magic could hurt her in Get it Done.

* Notice how quickly Kennedy all of sudden starts deferring to Buffy after the crap has gone down. There's no more "Look at me. I'm a rebel. I should be in charge, stuff". It's all "what should we do now? Are we OK?"

In fact the one potential who seems to be unafraid to speak up now is Vi. When Amanda asks Buffy if the scythe will help, Vi says "Let's hope." When the other potentials (Kennedy included) want to jump on the "it's all Faith's fault" bandwagon, Vi simply says, "it didn't work out".

Chosen

* When Buffy is giving the potentials their "choice" in the living room, Vi's arm is bandaged and in a sling.

* Up until now Vi's hair has always looked a little unkempt. Starting now she seems to be taking more care in her appearance. I take it as a self-respect thing.

* When they enter the school, Buffy directs the potentials to follow Faith. Vi is first in line behind Faith. She's wearing a hot blue jean outfit. Her hair is coifed. She has removed the sling that was on her arm the day before.

She is no longer the unkempt, awkward, girl in the goofy hat, who always trailed in the rear.

* Vi is still at the front of the pack when they enter the actual hellmouth. Rona's arm is in a cast. It is no longer in a sling.

* When they look down on the Ubervamps Vi stands behind Rona clutching her injured wrist. She holds a long thin knife. Her arm is still bandaged under her jacket.

* The potentials are enraptured by slayer power, and Vi delivers that great line, "These guys are dust." The next time we see her she is flying through the air delivering a drop kick.

Following that she has an Uber-vamp from behind and she is slashing it's neck with her knife.

We next see her in the background fighting 2 ubes at once. The camera finds her, and she takes them both out.

When the uber-vamp drives it's sword through Buffy's back, Vi comes up behind the Ube and drags it off her.

In the final rally after Buffy rises to her feet Vi takes out 3 ubes almost at once - again with nothing but a knife.

* Vi has to help Rona out of the school. In the bus Vi bandages Rona's wounds and hollers her to consciousness - "Listen to me. This is nothing. Stay awake."

When Wood comes back to life, Vi comes up and starts looking after him.

Awesome. Ok, you convinced me. I'm on the Vi band wagon. But the best part is, you could do the same thing for the other Potentials too.
Why did you create this long list of Vi's actions in the last two or three episodes? To convince me of her worth as the fans' favorite Potential? I don't care. I don't dislike Vi, but she's not a favorite of mine. I merely stated that she was the only Potential who wasn't criticized because she was a favorite and wasn't as ambiguous as Kennedy or Rona.

But was there a single girl in Chosen who protested? Who walked out and said, "do what you want, I'll have the power to protect myself, but I'm not going to help you today"?

The Potentials/Slayers in Sunnydale were given a choice to help Buffy fight in "Chosen". I was complaining about Buffy's treatment of them before "End of Days"/"Chosen".

I don't care that you don't care. I asked n4h to supply evidence for his assesment of Vi as a character, and he did so (admirably, I might add) by citing specific scenes and instances in the source material (Buffy scripts and what is visually onscreen) It doesn't have anything to do with what you think of Vi. It simply struck me as strange that n4h saw so much in a character that I barely paid attention to, wanted to know what he saw and asked about it. And he replied.

BTW, would anyone mind if I did something similar for Kennedy and posted it here? Cause I think it would help me understand her better....
