I asked Scott Allie about just how vampires could be so popular despite doing what they do, and not everybody relying on reality TV for their info. His response:
"This is something I think requires a little more explanation over time. The Tales of the Vampires story we announced today, with Becky Cloonan and Vasilis Lolos, will explore this a little bit."
So that means a) he's aware this situation isn't entirely plausible as currently presented, and b) this Tales of the Vampires story is going to be canon.
I think it's something they should be explaining in the main comic, but I guess something is better than nothing.
