What are your thoughts on the relationship between Xander/Willow/Buffy since "Chosen"?

A sort of combination of the Three Musketeers with a touch of the Three Stooges, tossed in for flavor. They fight like the Musketeers, and the "One For All, and all for one" thing would fit well, and they definitely bring a in little comedy to lighten things up.

Buffy and Xander ended up on good terms in Chosen, so I think they're still close. But not as close with Willow.

S8 also supports this with Buffy and Xander working together in Scotland while Willow went off on a magical journey.

That's one thing I hate with S8 (haven't read the whole thing yet I'm at the end thought and haven't started s9). You spent 7 years building up their friendship and then in the comics it seems like they aren't close anymore, the whole thing just doesn't seem right. I'm still in a toss up as to weither I should ignore the comics as a fallow up to s7 or if I should view it as kind of a separate serie that isn't related to the tv show. And don't get me wrong I LOVE the comics, but it just feels too different from the show to be considered a direct fallow up.

Except the why of it because Willow is such an obnoxious know it all in the comics (which was built up in the last years of the show) that I wouldn't want to be friends with her either. All she does is go around telling her supposed friend what terrible people they are.

Sorry for going off topic but since you have brought it up, I am curious how Scotland is represented in the comics (since I don't read them myself). Is is a stereotype Scotland with nothing but countryside, ruined castles, and tribes of people wearing kilts? Or is it normal, i.e. pretty much the same as Sunnydale or anywhere else (except for the weather).

In the little time they actually spend there and focus on the outside part of the world, it's just like any other place except that they have their base in a castle.

I thought S8 continued the relationships between the characters well. Buffy and Xander are still close. Willow goes her own way, she drifted away from her friends but we already saw that in S7. S7 shows Buffy being closer to Xander than Willow and S8 continued that.

You're probably right, I think I'm just in denial because I feel like they shouldn't drift apart. I've always looked up to their friendship so I refuse to think they could drift apart 🙁.

Personally, I don't think the growing separation between the three of them was planned. I think it stemmed from the fact that there was new writers brought in during S8, writers who had never written for these characters, and while they might have been fans of the show, that's a lot different to actually writing them, especially for a comic.

By the time S9 came along, that division was already there - especially where Willow was concerned - so they just continued to go down that path.

I also think it has a lot to do with Willow, and the writers and Joss not knowing what to do with a character so powerful. Even taking her power away did nothing but turn her into a selfishly driven little girl who gave up everything to get her powers back.

Losing magic should have healed the rift between the three (four) of them, but instead it made it worse and I can't understand why the writers went that way.

Has there been a more accurate post?
I don't think the problem has come from the comics, Buffy and Xander became close the summer between season 6 and 7, the slight rift between them and Willow has been throughout season 7 and into the comics.

I agree
I agree with Lyri, I think the best thing they could have done in s8 was to not give Willow back her power, it was a great way to bring the characters back to the core and how they use to be. I like Willow as a witch, but I liked her way better when she was trying to make pencil floats!

Oh my god, this! A hundred times this! Willow was such a better character before the heavy magic arcs. I actually think that's Willow's best capacity. Not as one of the main leads they morphed her into who leads the arcs but as the primary supporting character. Her best arcs and developments came in the first three seasons, largely because the writers didn't overreach her.

Exactly!! Even s4-5 or fine with me as character development. S6 is my favorite because it actually is suppose to show that more power is not better, it is suppose to show that it's not a good thing! To me they should actually have ended s6 or at least beginning s7 with removing her powers, it would have been a nice arc closing for me! And we could have gotten s1-3 Willow back, and would have came full circle, or to me at least!

That would have been fine with me too. Plus, I could never, ever take Willow seriously in S7 because the plain fact of her using magic at all pretty much spits in the face of the the metaphor they were trying to get across in S6 (no matter how clunky I thought it was). I mean, it's a little hard to invest in Willow when she's supposed to be a "magic addict" in S6, and then, because the writers aren't skilled enough to keep her a relevant part of the series without magic, her just taking it up again because "it's a part of her now". Lame.

Ya on my part I loved the addiction storyline (was probably my favorite of the serie even if I'm in minority here), but s7 was metaphorically like: Eh, I'm an recovering alcoholic but I can drink a few glasses of wine a day because it's a part of me! To make sense, they would have had to change either s6 or change s7.
