I loved, loved, loved Riley in the first scene! I can see why Buffy's friends like him so much. Did you notice how he stopped messaging Buffy when Xander started to imitate him and hurt Anya? He noticed that Xander made a fool of himself and stopped right away for Xander's sake. Plus when Xander's parents started to fight and it appeared that Xander was uncomfortable, Riley coughed and it looked to me like he wanted to pat Xander or something, it was adorable.

Poor Xander. 🙁 19 years living in that hell, I can see how his homelife affected him: his short temper, his judgmental personality, his insecurities, using jokes to hide the pain. If Willow hadn't been his friend all these years, he would have turned into a monster way sooner.

While I see why Anya is very anxious to move out of Xander's stinky, smells-of-urine basement, "“doesn't she have an apartment of her own?- she was too pushy it was annoying. The poor guy doesn't have enough money, plus his constriction job is ending soon. Sometimes I just can't blame Xander chiding Anya, she comes off too childish at times.

I love when the Scoobies make fun of Giles. 😀

Willow being sweet to Spike, adorable. But then Willow is sweet with everyone. It's her nature. I loved when Spike nods to her, though.

Spike cheering the demon to kill Buffy. LOL. And you wonder why the Scoobies dislike him. 😉 Stupid Toth repays Spike by ruining lamp. 😡

Awww, Xander pushes Buffy away and gets hit instead. One of the many times he saves her life.

You know, my sympathies to Joyce. While I'm not a mother yet, two daughters engaging in silly fights and putting you in the middle is so frustrating.

Sigh, Spike, this doll of yours will be used for things other than a punching bag in the future. ::huh1::

I've always thought that Xander left his confident self in high school, at least pre-The Zeppo. For a loser, he always struck me as a confident one. Maybe it all started when his friends thought less of him concerning fighting demons and vamps? And his insecurity increased when all his friends went to college and he was stuck in his parents' basement getting fired from silly jobs.

Awww, poor Xander. Too insecure to see that he rarely got in trouble and he helped a lot. It's enough to mention that if he didn't sacrifice his life for Buffy's, she would have been in his place right now. And he's willing to throw his life away until he remembered Anya. Demon!Xander can't have Anya. I love the moments that show us that Anya comes first in Xander's life.

It just hits Anya that she's an immortal and she's gonna die soon. It's sad that none of her wishes will get granted because of their non-marriage. 🙁

BUFFY: Riley, do you wish-
RILEY: No.
BUFFY: No? You don't even know what I was gonna say.
RILEY: Yes, I do. You wanted to know if I wished you got hit by the ferula-gemina, got split in two.
BUFFY: Well, you have been kind of rankly about the whole slayer gig. Instead of having slayer Buffy, you could have Buffy Buffy.
RILEY: Hey. I *have* Buffy Buffy. Being the slayer's part of who you are. You keep thinking I don't get that, but...
BUFFY: It's just ... I know how ... un-fun it can be. The bad hours, frequent bruising, cranky monsters...
RILEY: Buffy... if you led a perfectly normal life, you wouldn't be half as crazy as you are. I gotta have that. I gotta have it all. I'm talkin' toes, elbows, the whole bad-ice-skating-movie obsession, everything. There's no part of you I'm not in love with.

🙂

RILEY: (grinning) Hey, I'm well aware of how lucky I am. Like, lottery lucky. Buffy's like nobody else in the world. When I'm with her it's like ... it's like I'm split in two. Half of me is just ... on fire, going crazy if I'm not touching her. The other half ... is so still and peaceful ... just perfectly content. Just knows: this is the one. (Smiles a little, continues packing for a moment, then looks up at Xander again.) But she doesn't love me.

🙁

I liked the replacement.. Not for the Riley-ness though... Never cared for Riley at all... But I liked the Xander parts. I felt for Xander, and really enjoyed his journey to grow up... Cos it was what happened in the episode. Xander grew up, moved out, and began a new stage in his life.

this episode is one of my favourite episodes! Xander..s rule!! 😀 oh, sosa lola you forgot to mention the SNOOPY DANCE!! 😀

18.gif
lol the original Snoopy dance XD

I used to ADORE it....then I started being able to tell the Nick and his brother apart....now it just kind of irks me.
Oh, the good old days when I didn't know Xander well enough to catch stupid differences.

I always liked this episode. I agree about Riley, and I felt vindicated with his return in "As You Were".

In "Restless" Xander's struggle with The Basement tells us that he believes he will never leave, that he will die there. In "The Yoko Factor" he declares: "No! It was bad before that! Since you two went off to college and forgot about me. Just left me in the basement to.." If not for other distractions, that would have ended with 'to rot'

This was Xander's Big Bad, and he slayed it handily. What I took from this episode was that we all have the strength within us to overcome our largest adversities; we just don't know it yet.

Not for the Riley-ness though... Never cared for Riley at all.

I get not liking Riley, but we have to admit that he's a very good friend to the Scoobies and boyfriend to Buffy 😉

Oops, the Snoopy Dance, how the hell did I forget it 😀 But I guess it's just too obvious, I wanted to focus on things that weren't obvious in first viewing, which is why my eyes were glued to the TV : king :

Anya was irritating because she was SO SO SO tired of Xander basement. And that new apartment was heaven compared to the basement so she was determined to persuade Xander to take it, just that instead of subtleness she went all guns blazing.

I did say I understand why Anya desperately wanted Xander out of that stinky basement, but she had to be rational. Xander doesn't have enough money at the moment. If she really wanted him out, she could have him move in into her apartment and both of them share the rent.

Like "The Pack" this was a great Xander centered episode.

Toth was just a plot device, the main story was about Xander finally accepting that it's time to grow up.

At least that's what I got from it.

Really felt bad for Riley in that final scene, telling Xander that Buffy doesn't love him.

Snoopy Dance...EPIC!!!

Good episode. Xander ones are always good though. I had no idea till recently that it was Nics twin brother that was playing 'evil' Xander, its obvious when you know and you watch it again.

I did like this episode because it's nice that we had another Xander based episode which, although I'm not a major Xander fan, I still don't think there was enough of.
Also, I think I'm the only one that liked Anya in this episode. She was trying so hard to help Xander...just in her own rather rude sounding sort of way. She wanted a life for the two of them, she's just not very good at expressing herself without coming across rude.

And personally, hated the Riley parts of this episode. Just made me shout at the screen "FFS! Grow a pair!"...but then most things Riley says make me wanna say that.

Man, Riley gets such a hard time! There is so much irrational hatred around here! 😛

I don't think there's any point in this episode where Riley needs to 'grow a pair' unless we like the stereotype that men expressing their feelings makes them 'unmanly' 😛

I love this episode. The 'weak' Xander is hilarious! Personally, I felt really sorry for Riley. My face was exactly like Xander's when he says 'but she doesn't love me.'

I'm not agreeing with that stereotype at all! I find that rather offensive actually.
Buffy treated him like sh*t! It pains me to see someone treat someone like that and it pains me to see someone let them do it to them.

I was only joking; hence this face 😛

Sorry if I offended, my intention was sarcasm, not offence!

Okay, sorry...I shall pay more attention to smilies 🙂
Anyway, yes, Xander and stuff.

I always knew it was his brother but I really couldn't tell much difference.
What differences were noticed?

No worries. It can be SO difficult to tell if someone's joking or not! It happens to me a lot ;)
