For anyone that has read Joss's run in the Runaways (ie: Vol. 8, Dead End Kids): Can I read that without reading the rest of the comics written by Brian K. Vaughan? The whole thing actually sounds really interesting to me, but frankly, I just don't have the money to go out and buy 8 friggin volumes of comics.

I did that, I started reading Joss's arc without reading the ones before I didn't have a problem but there will be somethings you will miss out on.
I'd try and find a summary of the story before or maybe read the Wiki page on it.
Like I said you wont have a problem starting at Joss's arc, but it would make it better to know the backstory. (I went back and read all the previous issues before Joss's arc after to catch up on all the bits I wasn't getting)

Whedon's arc really isn't anything special. The arcs before it are a lot better, so I'd say start from the beginning. Even if it takes you a while to get around to reading Dead End Kids, you aren't missing out on much but you'll be missing a lot more if you start from the Joss arc.
And plus I just have a thing about reading/watching a series in order.

I think you can read it without reading the others, but you won't have the investment in the characters that comes with reading the earlier stories. Personally I don't like Joss' run, it's average. Brian K. Vaughan's stuff is brilliant.
To respond to everyone: I love Joss a lot, and admittedly I'm a supernerd about collecting all things Joss. But I did enjoy Vaughan's writing in No Future For You quite a bit. Even more than Joss's. So I think I'll just wait til I'm old and rich to buy all of the Runaways. Maybe I'll read them in Barnes and Nobles some ay!

I pretty much just came in here to echo what everyone else is saying...Joss' run is average at best, but Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways are awesome. If you're only gonna get one writer's version of the comic, go with BKV.
And you hardly have to wait until you're old and rich to get Brian K. Vaughan's volumes...you can get the paperbacks for about $4-5 a piece on Amazon.

I liked Joss' run, not as good as Brians stuff, but i still liked it. I still need to get Moore and Immonens run, i've heard they're bad but i still need to see it for myself.
