Everything that’s bleak about the modern world is wrapped-up like a perfect, little package with these illustrations by London-based artist and animator, Steve Cutts. Rampant consumerism. Shitty jobs. Environmental devastation. Disinformation. Nonsense. Billionaire psychopaths. Overcrowded cities—all present and accounted for. We’ve featured Cutts’ work here on DM before with his dark animation about the current lives of ‘80s cartoon characters.

What's the one with the cats driving people's brains? lol

LOL I didn't really get that one either. I thought maybe it was because cats are, like, huge on the internet, and that it illustrates what being a cat owner feels like also. We are poop on their paws.

Really? Really?, Because life a hundred years, two hundred years plus ago and further back was a hell of a lot better than it is now😕.

There are seven plus billion people in the world. They are eating more, better, easier and healthier than ever before. Life expectancy in the 1800s was 30+ and that statistic is from the better well off countries at that time. Anybody can make anything look bad, i would like the persons who made these pics to be send back 500 years into the past even to the best country of that time, and see how they like it. Could we improve on the way we live and our behavior?, yes, but believe me, never have there been better times for the world than the modern times.

At least for the humans, wouldn't say so for nature and animals, but yes, for humans we live more comfortably than we have before
I don't like where the world is going, mostly cause I'm old school and would rather we take care of the nature around us than think of the next disposable technology we can invent. But I gotta admit I'm a bit sick of seeing all these things trashing technology and trashing how people live nowadays. I personally don't consume much, all my belongings can fit in the back of a truck, but I like watching my TV shows, big deal. Doesn't make me a zombie either.

Edit:the artwork is cool though!

and where do you think the world is going?.

i think we have become more aware of the environment, and as we keep improving technology wise and society wise we will take better care of nature. we already do alot and we'll keep doing better. People have become more mindful of animal care and nature, look at that dentist that killed that lion, i bet he would like to go to the past and not had killed that lion.

i think we might be going to a version of this video, not necessarily the space traveling but the conquering of basic needs of human kind.

Meh... those stats, once you start reading about history and stats, are enormously biased by a high infant and child mortality rate, rather than people dropping off at ca 30. Not that life wasn't harsher then, certainly it was, but it's not like 30 was 70 back then. That's a gross over simplifcation of the situation.

"Eating more" certainly, "better, easier, healthier" ... dude, like, c'mon... Easier ok. But better and healthier... We have a better idea of physiology and medical knowledge that's for sure, but honestly - traveling 500 years back would bring less comfort, certainly. Less people, obviously. But misery and death everywhere? ... yeah you can skew those images as well.

To say that "never have there been better times for the world" is a rather naive statement to make.

The problem is nowadays we create more of our own problems than we ever did in the past.

Depends on who you are I guess. I suppose if you're a woman, or an ethnic minority, or disabled, or of a religious minority, or homosexual, then it would't be naive at all.

I work in environmental chemistry (I create green technology), so I see a lot of the shit that goes down behind closed doors. I'm Canadian, so keep in mind I'm referring to Canada, I have no idea what goes on elsewhere. But in the last year alone our Prime Minister has cut millions and millions in founding for research towards green energy. Not only that, but he has removed the laws protecting our thousands of lakes and forest up North, which are now being destroyed for industrial purposes, and to retrieve petrol. There are talks to build a huge pipeline across Canada to exploit fuels, which will destroy the ecosystem to an irreparable point. In the few years he has been Prime Minister, our greenhouse gas emission have increase ten folds, and he's removed us from all environmental control programs.

Just last week, where I live, 3 bears were killed for coming too close to the city, a city that we built on their land. They weren't aggressive, there was no reported attacks, and yet they were killed by police forces. Ya, one lion makes a riot, but no one cares about what happens on our own land.

Again, this is all about Canada going to hell. I hope other countries are doing a better job.

Couldn't disagree more. "Society" is dead. The gap between rich and poor is immeasurable -- poor are suffering now more than ever, surely poverty should be something that improves as science, technology and society evolves and pushes foreward. Children all over the globe go to sleep hungry at night, that isn't something to be proud of. There are wars taking place in many countries, some we hear nothing about, and some where hundreds of civilians die every week. There are landfills full to the brim. Several species of animals becoming extinct. High fat/high sugar foods are sold to and programmed to the brain's of the young, obesity is killing our children and straining our health care systems. Radiation in food/GMO food/depleted uranium used in weaponry - the half life of depleted uranium is 4.5 billion years. Children are being born in the countries where DU is used with fingers for eyes. Events like the aftermath of Fukushima were not handled correctly and the ocean is filled with radiation. Corporations care not about the environment or our nature, and we have no choice in the matter, whether they want to dump rivers with waste or pollute our drinking water. I belive there are caring, non-psychopathic people in the world who disagree with what is going on in the present, but people like that aren't the ones in power and so they have zero control. The dentist who killed the lion was no doubt rich - there is always a theme.

Sadly true in most cases. If enough people push, change is possible, at least there's hopes for it. For example we have a scientist union of some sort, and it's not suppose to partake in political issues, that's not our jobs. But things were getting so bad with the government that people are starting to speak up. There's hopes. Most people in my line of work wants to do the right thing, yet we seem to always be getting the bad name but most often than not, it's the governments that ultimately controls our results. If it's not something that will make them money, they aren't interested. Which is especially hard in environmental studies because most green technologies are more expensive to produce than regular technologies. It's a struggle, but I still aspire to make a bit of a difference. Whether I succeed or not is a different matter.

Blaze, we are still in our infancy but we are improving. The fact that you and many other care about this, is improvement. In the past your main care would be how to get your next meal. We need to solve our energy crisis and we are currently trying to do that, fusion energy is the motherload and the forseeable hope for now. I dont know much about canada. I heard that you guys are extracting petroleum from dirt, it's something that you guys got to balance out with your needs and not damaging much the environment. You can always vote those politicians out.

As for the bears, i suppose they could had been moved to another area when the people were building the city, from what i heard Canada is huge and mostly desolated.

No but your sensible and a lot of people aren't. Like anything else with so much power there are good and bad sides to the technology, its kind of how people use it. Example, the Internet it only really became so messed up because people abused it. I guess its bad that it is so much easier for people to do that but then it is still the people who caused it. Technology just moves too fast now and has become an ugly b-product of capitalism. Its like people are never happy and always have to try and top themselves, and that just leads to extra cost which no one can afford right now.

I won't deny that a lot of people care. But as @GwenRaiden pointed out, those are often not the people in power. Again, this is just from what I experience working the field in Canada, I gotta admit I'm not knowledgeable with other countries and other issues, at least not as knowledgeable as I would like. Yes, we do extract petroleum from dirt, but we're also not the only problem. A lot of that petroleum goes to the States, it's not just a National issue, it's International. And as long as money is involved that won't change. Trust me I want Harper out of here. But truth is he only needs 26% of the country's vote to get back in (according to the last estimate). Our politics system sucks. And as long as he's in power nothing can be changed about that.

The reason the bears are coming to the city is because we're taking away all of their foods by building industries that is killing the environment. Nothing can excuse the killing of an innocent animal for no reasons at all, and because of something that we did to them. Again, those are not aggressive animals.

I think there's lots of misconception about Canada. Surely we have more landscape than most countries, but it's not nearly as desolated as people think it is.

A lot of those pictures capture the problems very well. We as humans have come along way in many respects. We've become experts at overcoming hurdles and making life easier for ourselves in many ways. We've also conquered all sorts of natural difficulties from disease to disasters.

Unfortunately what we're not very good at is seeing when we're causing the problems. Our population is increasing rapidly and yet we still have just the one planet. The system in place means that the people at the top get an ever increasing share of that planet (richest families in UK have doubled their fortunes since the recession). So we have an ever increasing number of people trying to survive on less and less. Not too mention the scale of damage we do to the planet (UK government giving the green light to fracking and more destruction of the countryside etc.).

On top of all that trade deals are being negotiated to officially recognise corporate rights above national interests (TPP & TTIP). This is a disaster for everyone who isn't already filthy rich and especially destructive for the planet.

We're approaching a tipping point where we need to reign ourselves in as a species or things will get nasty quickly.

Sorry, but a lot of this seems to be a cop-out to me.

The world is as it is now because we, ALL of we, have made it this way.
People are addicted to crappy high sugar/fat foods so they get obese and diabetic. People enslave themselves to the latest tech and quickly get addicted to the phones/gizmo's, twitter or whatever. People shop at their supermarket and then wonder why all the local, family run businesses close up. People are depressed because they look at adverts telling them how they should feel and they believe it- they buy the product, wonder why they don't resemble the person they saw on TV and then get unhappy. They buy into the capitalist system, overspend with their credit cards (all of them) and then are shocked when their debt gets out of control

People are more apathetic about politics than ever and so they don't vote and then wonder why nothing changes/people don't listen to them/things stay the same- that is on them. They don't have a right to complain if they don't, in some small way, try and effect the outcome.

Simply blaming it all on some group/system- 'the rich people' or 'fat cats' or 'globalization' or 'capitalism' - is a student activists argument and its deeply naive. That's just another symptom pf what's wrong with people. People is poor countries and in rich countries, in positions of power, will abuse the system if they feel they can get away with it.

Like I said, people create their own problems nowadays- over-population, depression, apathy, worrying about things they can't control instead of concentrating on the things that they can.

After watching 'Mad Men' I'm actually convinced that we could seriously put a dent in world wide depression epidemic if we got rid of all advertising. You just get to see how this sort of legalized lying started to corrupt people's outlook on things. Objects becoming oh so important. More so than people.

But...its all still better than a lot of what's come before. Less disease, less poverty, less conflict, overall less death and a better quality of life compared to the centuries that have come before.
The reason people don't accept that is because, thanks to 24 hr news, we hear about every bad thing in the world EVER. Every catastrophe, every problem, every possible threat, every thing that 'could possibly be bad for you' is now news and its on every single day.
