The Sadness of Watching the last Buffy Episode

As I said in my intro, I don't have network/cable television. I have a friend who recommends TV series that I get on Netflix or at my local library. Lost, Heroes, and Dexter were his prior recommendations. He begged me to try Buffy, and told me the first season is good, then in Season 2 it becomes great. I resisted. I became hooked on the first Episode, and agreed that it hit "great" in Season 2 and never left "great."

Wow, did I get hooked! I averaged a season every 8 days or so. Now I have two more episodes left. I have never been so "addicted" to a series! The only thing that comes close is "The Simpsons," but in a different way.

The characters are amazing. The plots amazing. Wow!

I really can't believe the ride is almost over. I know I have Angel to watch next week, but darn, I'm a bit bummed that is over.

So anyone else suffer the "Buffy is Over" blues?
 
Oh yeah! I was really depressed at that time, seriously depressed. I started being depressed in the last few episodes when I realized this is going to be over soon by the commercials they put of images of Buffy from the last season and the song "Goodbye to you" is being played in the background. I mean, I know it is going to be over, why do you have to depress me even more when saying goodbye to Buffy forever?? LOL

And I have to admit, if the comics didn't continue the series, no matter how sucky they are, they still are canon, I probably would have been depressed to this day. It's been 7 years, but I'm not over it yet. I'm THAT hooked, it's part of me, not only part of my life. Has been for the past... 13? 14? years?
 
I felt like a part of my had died when I finished Buffy for the first time. Seriously. I was almost hysterical over what happens in the end. No spoilers here, but I'm curious what you think.

You should consider re-watching the show with Angel in tandem as it's supposed to be watched and how it was aired. You'll get a lot out of it, and see so much more then you did on the first watch. To not watch both at the same time is to miss part of the story. AtS and BtVS are the only shows I've ever heard of that take place in the same universe and crossover.

Almost everyday. Thank God for the BB and other fellow Buffy fans. Buffy isn't over as long as there's a fandom like this 🙂

Like you, I also got addicted to BtVS when I watched the episodes on Netflix, which was this summer, lol. You should definitely watch Angel when you finish with BtVS. To keep Buffy alive for me, I then moved on to "Supernatural" partly because I heard some actors from Buffy and Angel make some guest appearances (Julie Benz, Mercedes McNab, Amber Benson, and Amy Acker (from AtS) for starters). I've become addicted to that show now. It doesn't cure me of my Buffy blues, but it helps 🙂

It was disappointing that it was over - but then I started watching Angel and all was right in the world 🙂 More awesomeness.
 
I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I have the two last episodes that I could watch right now, but I think I'll save them for tonight.

I've watched exactly 10 seconds of the commentaries (it took that long for the commentator to give away a spoiler), so I have those to watch too.

Spoiler Alert!

The character development has been amazing. Spike and Buffy's relationship has been fun/sad/exciting to watch. Tara and Willow's love was so beautiful. Xander, who was not been one of my favorites, brought me to tears in the Season 6 finale. I've fallen madly in love with Willow (hehehe). The Body has easily become the best episode of TV that I have ever watched. I hate all musicals, yet the "Once More, With Feeling Soundtrack" is blasting on my ipod. I'm even liking Dawn.

There have been so many wonderful moments, and even the "bad" episodes are still pretty darn good. I can forgive them for the Caveman/Beer episode when 90%+ of the other episodes were great or even better than great.

It's been a wonderful two month run. I'm sorry to see it end. I'm glad I have the boards to share this with.
 
I didn't have cable when it aired and had to wait a couple years before I got to actually watch it and by that time I had read all about it online so I was pretty prepared for it. I'm more sad that there hasn't been another spin off than I am about it ending. I'm glad they didn't drag it out until it was bled dry like they do with some shows.
 
Every time I watch Chosen I get this sinking feeling. Like although it was over before I even considered watching it... it's REALLY over every time I watch Chosen. So yeah, sometimes I do get the "Buffy is over" blues. Also sometimes when I think about how cool it wold be to see a new Buffy episode as it airs... I get mad at myself for not getting into it back then and I get sad it's not going to happen.
 
I read that Buffy is one of the TV series that never jumped the shark. I absolutely agree.

Three of my favorite musical groups are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Jam. All three ended before getting embarrassing or irrelevant (can you say "Rolling Stones" or "The Who"?).

I was thinking of something.... I really love Willow and think she is brilliant. And I love Anya and Spike too. And Giles is such a great father figure. Well, you know who I forgot.....

Buffy of course! It just dawned on my that Buffy is amazing too! I don't know why it didn't hit me, but I've identified with the Scoobies so much that I sort of took Buffy for granted. It hit me when I listened to the OMWF soundtrack. Sarah really has a great voice for an amateur singer. And her lecture in Season 7 after the potential slayer's suicide really opened my eyes. I haven't gone to most of this website for fear of reading a spoiler, but I'm wondering if others feel the same. It's sort of funny to not appreciate the main character, but I don't think I have (yet).
 
I am right there with you on the sadness. I started watching it again this past spring. Got hooked, and I am now in my 4th re watch. When I get done with Choosen, I almost have to go back to Welcome to the Hellmouth and watch it. Just so the characters are still there. And of course that leads on to the next ep and the next ep and so on. lol I now have my sister watching it since I have talked so much about it. She started season 2 this week. I can't wait to talk to her about the show as she watches it. 🙂
 
I might be a minority here, but I'm never sad when something ends. I don't want something I like to continue just for the sake of it.
For example, there is that manga I really love, Nana. It's been like 4 or 5 books we have the impression the story arrives at his term but it's still hasn't. I still don't know what will that big thing that will happen and shakes everything. Well something did happen but the new book wasn't released yet. So I don't know if the story is over soon or if it will keep up for 20 books. And that is kind of annoying, to have the feeling a serie is continued because people don't want it to be over too soon.
Like with Harry Potter, when the 7th was released, everybody was like "Oh no I'm so sad it's the last booooooook!".
While I was more like: "Yayyy, I will finally know the secret of why Harry lived, I will finally know if he will defeat Voldemort, I will finally have the epic last battle I always longed to reaaaad!"

So I've never been that upset by the end of a serie. And as I rewatch Buffy once or twice a year, it would take too much time if there were like 10, 11 seasons.

On the other hand, if I was told that Muse was over, I would be devastated because you know, every album of a band is like the new serie of an author, and music isn't like a story that keeps up and then ends, you know what I mean?


The thing which saddened me the more about Buffy's ending is that it was difficult to find people to talk about it. That's not a problem anymore :tongue3:

And Ms. Trick, I hear you. I love the fact that I never have to listen to that "terrible" Beatles CD made in 1978 that they put out just for money, that was past their prime, that didn't have Paul because he didn't want to be a part of it, that only had John for half the songs (along with Yoko), and was written mostly by Ringo. lol

Or great movies like "The Incredible's" or "Casablanca" that never had a bad sequel (like Jaws)

Watching the end of "Chosen" for the first time was very sad. It was the end of watching something i cherished and to know that nothing new was coming naturally was upsetting.

It occurs everytime i rewatch that episode aswell. It is the end of a journey you feel you've been apart of. The longevity of the show means that last episode is even more emotional.

All I can say is.... WOW!!!

What an amazing season, and what an amazing finale. The funny part was that I was sure that I knew that Willow was going to die. I googled something once and a youtube video came up called "Willow's Death." I was bummed that I "knew" what was going to happen. It seems that there is a game called Fallout and I guess you have to kill something called Willow. I'm really happy she didn't die.

Buffy was the greatest series I ever watched. Wow!

Now it's time to explore the boards without fear of spoilers.
 
I discovered Buffy in syndication in 2001 or 2002, so I saw some of the last 1 or 2 seasons, but I didn't give it a serious watch until last year. I'm on my 2nd full rewatch (1st rewatch sharing with this board), and I saw Chosen a couple wks ago. I'm now in the middle of Angel season 5, so I'm refusing to get depressed or post my big "what I learned from my rewatch" thread until I've rewatched Not Fade Away.

Goby, definitely post on all the episode discussion threads- I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

And yes: best television show EVER!!
