The Scientists in "Long Way Home Issue 1"

I haven't read season 8 but I'm watching the motion comic right now and why was the scientists in Issue 1 of Long Way Home going into Destroyed Sunnydale?

They were investigating as to why Sunnydale was destroyed, and Buffy and her Slayer army ultimately were blamed (though it isn't clear why).
