I think it's only fair that a film for kids should have gross bodily function gags that kids find hilarious. It's all very well being all post-modern and re-making the cartoon with an "adult" spin (E.g. dope-smoking gags) but let's not forget the children who presumably the producers were, at least partly, aiming the film at.
Young Connor is now heavily into the original cartoons as a result of the movie and I don't think he differentiates between the two...

I've actually heard that the screenwriter developed two versions of the Scooby Doo script (Actually more than heard...I read it on the screenwriter's website). One was an adult-oriented script mocking the cartoon, much like The Brady Bunch Movie, and the other was a more direct adaptation intented for kids. The movie the studio ended up making is apparently a hodge podge of the two, because the studio-types couldn't decide if they wanted a family/children's movie or a satire. With the financial success of the first film, especially with the vertically-challenged demographic, the studio is firmly in the children's film camp for the sequel, so I suspect Scooby Doo 2 will be a much more cohesive adventure-type movie for kids with no pot jokes and less sexual innuendo (but fart jokes, I'm sure, still prominently in place).
 
I'm in my thirties and I saw the "Scooby-Doo" movie on cable, out of curiousity, being an old fan. Silly as the movie was, I thought that it also perfectly captured the spirit and style of the cartoon . . . especially during its early years on the air.

I hadn't seen that - it certainly explains why the film doesn't wholly work either as a "nudge, nudge,wink,wink" adult nostalgia-fest or as an out-and-out kid's film. I think the only recent films that work best for both audiences have got to be the Pixar ones and any other producers have got a pretty high mark there to aim for...

I still like the film despite it's shortcomings and the Boy loves it even though most of the humour is a bit beyond him. (And, as yet, he hasn't asked me to explain any of the more "sophisticated" gags - phew!🙂)
 
I, like some other's here enjoyed the movie. I got it on DVD a while back. I never really liked the cartoon so I didn't think I would like the movie but I saw it because of SMG. And i'm glad I saw it, I really liked it.

Xander_Lover - That is so weird about the whole thing with it being like Chosen. I never noticed that till you pointed it out.

But if the movie didn't work, why was it a box office hit? Why did it bring on a sequel?
 
It was a box office hit because it had a recognizable brand name, an excellent marketing campaign, and it appealed to a wide variety of people, from nostalgic parents to teens and twenty-somethings to little tykes.

It brought on a sequel for the same reason that ANY movie brings on a sequel. The first one made a profit.

I see your point, but I coulnd't disagree more strongly. I don't think you can use box office success as an indicator of quality. Sometimes great movies make a lot of money. Sometimes awful movies make a lot of money.
 
A lot of children wanted to see it, they had to go with parents, some girls went just for Freddie, some boys just forSMG....
it was not that bad, but I saw it once and it's enough for me...

I merely meant that it didn't work 100% for me because it fell between the two stools - I did enjoy it though: especially watching it with the kids.

The Shaggy/Scooby fart competition is one of those cinematic moments where I like to reflect that it took hundreds of people and God only knows how many thousands of dollars to create a minute of film that no one on the planet could possibly enjoy. LMFAO!!! Ok, I have to say the following...
I totally agree with the whole Matthew Lilard being the PERFECT Shaggy as well as SMG really NOT impressing me as Daphnie...but I'm biast because I will always see her as Buffy so that's MY fault...lol

As for the fart scene...I realize this will put me beyond the negetive side of cool but I LOVED that scene! I sat there and laughed my ass off! At the end when he stands up straight after he notices Daphnie standing there and it goes all high pitched and...ok...now that no one will talk to me ever again I'm going to go and listen to my new self improvment tapes...I Am Me and I'm Ok...

Okay, okay! I admit it - I'm a total liberal in absolutely all things except fart jokes. I'm a fart conservative! But don't let my potty-humor prejudices prevent you from enjoying the stinky side of life. 😀

Rayne, it is NOT THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF COOL! You are no less cool than anyone else. WE just happen to be on a different side of cool than those who dislike it. There are many sides of cool, you know! AND I LUVED THAT SCENE 100% OVER THE TOP, ROLLING ON THE FLOOR IN LAUGHTER, REWIND AND WATCH OVER, SILENT LAUGHTER...You are you and you are great! So shut up and lets go buy that movie and watch it together and rewind on our favorite scene, okay!? 🙂 I luv you!

My all time favorite cartoon ever is Scooby Doo. I don't think that the film was exceptionally great overall, however, it was fun and entertaining and that was good enough for me! (Especially to the above referred scene) I am very grateful that they spent lots and lots of money to create that scene as it brought me incredible pleasure!

P.S. I'm not five years old either and I'm not apologizing for the fact that I still like it despite my age!
