Scott Allie says that issue #26 (the first issue of the upcoming Oz arc) will be titled "Retreat." (Or maybe that's the title of the whole arc.) That title suggests that here's where we enter the heart of this season's Act II, when All Seems Lost and bodies start to hit the floor.

So I thought it might be fun (or maybe fun isn't the right word) to predict who will be taking the dirt nap by the time we get to the end.

My list: Xander, Giles, Satsu, Harmony, Warren, Amy, Riley, Twilight, and many (if not most) of the New Slayers in Buffy's organization.

I can see all of those except Xander. I don't think they'll EVER kill Xander. But I can see Giles' time coming up. And the rest of them, not being core-four, are pretty disposable (in Joss' usual pattern) anyway.

I don't want them to kill Giles or Xander!! They're too amazing. I think some key character might die, but not the core four. Oh, it would be nice if Kennedy died. 😉

I don't want to see any of the good guys die, but Joss doesn't do that kind of happy ending.

I think this season will be even more painful than previous ones.

I only really care about Riley getting killed off, they have to kill him off this time, surely?!

I have a feeling that Satsu or one of new slayers would die 🙁 'No way' for Buffy and Willow but 'could be' for X-man or G-man. I love Joss's suprises but please not TOO surprising.

But how come Harmony still alive til today? She always survive with her lame(but funny) way.

I can't predict exactly who will die, but I have divided the characters into three categories based on the likelihood of their survival.

SAFE - I think I would die of shock if these characters didn't make it out alive.
  • Angel - IF he shows up, they wouldn't kill him, because he's an IDW character.
    Buffy - died too often.
  • Dawn - untill her keyness is going to feature as a story element, she's safe.
  • Harmony - has been with the show from the beginning (even the unaired pilot, that Angel wasn't in yet) plus she's great for setting things in motion.
  • Satsu - killing off the lesbian lover again would get too much negative reactions from LGBT fans.
  • Spike - see: Angel.
  • Willow - she's alive during Fray's time.

POSSIBLE SURVIVORS - could go either way for these characters.
  • Andrew - he's a fun character, which is a good reason to keep him, but they did also kill Jonathan, so we can't count on anything.
  • Amy - she might be killed in the climax or live to annoy another day.
  • Dracula - I'm tempted to say he's safe, because he's an icon. But killing off an icon can also have a big impact on the audience. Then again, can he even be killed?
  • Faith - is her story of redemption also the end for Faith? Could be! Chances that she lives to redeem other Slayers are roughly equal though.
  • Giles - hasn't been able to add to the story much, maybe now that he's teamed up with Faith he can, otherwise, his days might be numbered.
  • Kennedy - it sure would please a lot of fans.
  • Riley - Angel and Spike did plenty of wrong things, but Buffy allowed them to redeem themselves. On the other hand, this new Buffy might not be so forgiving.
  • Oz - we don't know his role in the story yet, so this is left TBD.
  • Warren - see: Amy.
  • Xander - here's a tricky one. This is the only character who's only tie to the story is his friendship to the other main characters (not an original watcher, not a key, not a vamp, not a witch). That might be a reason to keep him around. On the other hand, it's just as good a reason to kill him, as he can't produce any new storylines other than the interpersonal ones.

DOUBLY IN DANGER - I can't imagine these characters are going to make it out alive.
  • Twilight - the season's main villain has never survived; in the case of s6 (Dark) Willow lived, but Warren died (albeit shortly).

Satsu - killing off the lesbian lover again would get too much negative reactions from LGBT fans.

Do you think Joss would make a story decision based on something like that? If he wasn't afraid to kill off Tara...

Making the fans angry isn't something he's ever shied away from.

Willow - she's alive during Fray's time.

Assuming that timeline is still in play, or still is by the end of the story.

Obviously, Buffy hasn't told Willow about that. But it's hard to imagine a day would go by without her thinking about it, and wondering what to do. If there's any of the old Buffy left in her, she'll try to disconnect that future from Willow. That, of course, would make it possible (maybe even necessary) for her to die in this story.

But I don't think we'd see her die twice in one season. They'll find some other way to save her.

Andrew - he's a fun character, which is a good reason to keep him, but they did also kill Jonathan, so we can't count on anything.

He seems like the kind of character who would survive an asteroid strike. Probably with his action figure collection still intact. He's an observer character, and observers usually survive.

Amy - she might be killed in the climax or live to annoy another day.

I think she'll be killed, and then Warren will die as a result of her magic fizzling.

Dracula - I'm tempted to say he's safe, because he's an icon. But killing off an icon can also have a big impact on the audience. Then again, can he even be killed?

He no longer has his special powers... he was stripped of them in Tokyo along with the other vamps, so he's just a regular vampire now. I don't think we'll be seeing any more of him, though. He's kind of Drew Goddard's special project.

Faith - is her story of redemption also the end for Faith? Could be! Chances that she lives to redeem other Slayers are roughly equal though.

I think she's going to be the key character who takes Buffy by the hand, pulls her out of the mental hole she's in, and fights to victory by her side. That could end with a triumphant high-five and the two Chosen Ones finally reconciled, or it could end with Buffy mourning over Faith's dead body. Depends on what kind of mood Joss is in. Let's hope that upcoming new movie of his does well.

Giles - hasn't been able to add to the story much, maybe now that he's teamed up with Faith he can, otherwise, his days might be numbered.

He seems like the single most likely character to go down, I think.

Kennedy - it sure would please a lot of fans.

Well, if Satsu is protected, so is she. Doubly so, since she's still in a relationship with one of the main characters. My story instincts tell me she won't die, but I think she'll split from Willow at some point, probably over Saga Vasuki.

Plus, Dark Willow's words... "it's been 200 years, how do you think she is?"... suggest that she may live quite a long while in that particular timeline.

Riley - Angel and Spike did plenty of wrong things, but Buffy allowed them to redeem themselves. On the other hand, this new Buffy might not be so forgiving.

Depends which side he ultimately proves to be on. If he's a villain, Buffy will probably kill him with her own hands. If he's a good guy, he might live. All of Buffy's ex-lovers (except Satsu) have done terrible things to her at one point or another, but none of them have died (permanently).

Oz - we don't know his role in the story yet, so this is left TBD.

I wonder if he might have a role to play in saving Willow from her future. No idea whether that would entail dying or not.

Xander - here's a tricky one.

They were going to kill him at the end of season 7, but decided it just wasn't appropriate at that time (so they whacked Anya instead.) But I suspect they only ever considered killing him because they thought the story was over. The fact there's a season 9 might save him.

Twilight - the season's main villain has never survived; in the case of s6 (Dark) Willow lived, but Warren died (albeit shortly).

He's definitely toast... I just wonder if he's one of the people listed above.

I'm still tempted to suspect we're in for a Total Kill Scenario at the end of this season (all the main characters dying), and next season dealing with the implications of that.

Do you think Joss would make a story decision based on something like that? If he wasn't afraid to kill off Tara...

Making the fans angry isn't something he's ever shied away from.

Ah you'd be surprised... I very very vaguely remember Joss saying at one point he didn't realize LGBT fans feel there is a trend of their characters dying, and that Tara would've died regardless, but was i guess...sorry?...that it occurred. I think unless Satsu had a REALLY GOOD reason to die, ala character progression for the core four (Buffy probs) then she won't randomly be killed. He knows there was uproar the last time, and he won't do frivolously. I think it's safe to say that Satsu is the one of the more, or most integrated of all the new characters, so I personally think she's very very safe.

However, as we see Willow going cah-razy over dead lovers, I could see Kennedy dying just to maybe, either drive willow crazy, or be a way that Willow can prove that she has her magicks under control

I think it was kinda stupid from the LGBT community to react like that to Tara's death. I mean, gays can't die on TV ? What are we really asking for here ? That gay people are treated like anybody else, regardless of their sexual orientation... or that because of that they should get some kind of "positive action" concerning their ways of life ? I really don't think so. I'm gay and I'd rather have "my people" be shown as everyone else, just to prove that sexuality isn't this big a deal and it doesn't change anything. I'm not gonna cry "homophobia!" every time a homosexual gets treated like a heterosexual, with the bad sides too. People should really define what they want. (I can't believe I made this another "about homosexuality" thread. Sorry about that. Hormones I guess.)

Other than that, I also think Joss is afraid to get the fans angry. If he wasn't, he would have solved some problems, some polemics : Spuffy/Bangel much?! Or even Bangel/Cangel... Or the endless discussion about whether or not Cordelia did make Angel happy and turn into Angelus, or if he was just reminded of Buffy (like David B. said)...

I think that maybe all the characters will die and that s9 will be about them but in another dimension or something. It would be a great way to bring old characters like Tara and Anya without ressurecting them.

Or if not, I think that they will definetly not kill the core four. Joss can be cruel but I think He'll do that because it will break the story without the four main character.

The bad guys are def. toast, thats for sure 🙂

I think that by the end, either almost all the slayer will either be dead or they will reverse the spell

However, i don't think Satsu is going to die, and not because she's a lesbian but because they didn't explore her character enough yet. Think about it, Joss usually kills character that we love and care about, like Anya and Tara. Satsu is not one of those character yet because we haven't seen her enough (although I do really like her from what I've seen). Or they kill people that are totally useless and that we don't really know about them (like a potential slayer in s7). I think that if they kill her it's just going to be like when Renee died. I mean she had potential as a character (even tho I didn't really like her personnaly) but people didn't really care about her yet so her death didn't affect us as much at it should have. I think that killing Satsu right now would have the same effect on a lot of people. So I think that they'll keep her a bit longer to explore her character a bit more so that we can actually love her character and not just like her...and then maybe they'll kill her

beside that, I think that Dawn will die. It's probably one of the best thing that they could do to the storyline. Imagine Buffy, Willow and Xander's reaction.

Actually, it suggests she died quite a long while ago.

But that the 200-year interval is somehow relevant. If Kennedy was going to die during Buffy's "present day", it wouldn't matter how long ago it was.

"It's been 200 years" suggests to me the concept of her getting old and dying during that time.
