I don't know if it's just me and the fact I'm such a fan, but it seems to me like since the trailer hit the internet, the buzz on Serenity has hit a whole new level.

I get Google news updates on the search string Joss Whedon, and every day some paper is commenting on the upcoming movie, Serenity. Plus they're raving. One article touted it as the franchise to replace Trek and Wars.

The tech site Slashdot has taken it under it's wing, and sites presenting news on Serenity get slashdotted (a massive number of clicks that overwhelms sites) now.

The 10 city preview showings sold out in a matter of hours. I saw a downloadable app a couple of minutes ago that counts down the days to the movie.

If you're a Serenity news watcher, this is all kind of exciting.

Lol, yeah I just saw that too, totally cool.
I'm really excited about Serenity, and I've made my dad all excited as well (I've turned him into a Joss fan during the last six months, lol). But the thing is I've never seen one episode of Firefly, is that bad? I mean should I work really hard on finding and watching all the Firefly episodes before I see the movie?
 
It seems like a good strategy"”a pseudo grass roots kinda thing. Almost reminds me of the "Blair Witch" Internet phenomenon to a degree, though that was a completely unknown quantity. Get the fanboys and girls all riled up with the preview screenings, who blab all over the Internet. I wish they'd move it to pre-Labor Day...

Apparently you don't need to watch the TV eps but you should...you should 😉

It's top quality SF TV and very much worth watching. I have to admit that I missed Firefly when it was first shown but the lovely Mrs P bought me the DVD set for my birthday last year - none of those pesky commercials and some pretty good extras🙂

This is probably wishful thinking on my part, but the one it's starting to remind me of is Lord of the Rings.

I remember the frustration I used to have in the pre-movie days of LOTR. I'd read the book, of course, and it was so ingrained into my own personal mythology that I wanted to reference it in discussions, and have it universally accepted as a point of reference, but I was always running into people who had never heard of it.

Then the trailer hit the internet. Gradually I could mention the story, and the average guy would at least recognize it's existence. Then the movie hit. Now I can just say LOTR. I don't even have to say Lord of the Rings. People know what I'm talking about. I'm hoping for something like that from Serenity.

Wouldn't it be nice for instance, if you could say "Whedon" to people, and they recognize the name as easily as if you say "Speilberg"?

I would like to be able to reference something as "Whedonesque", and not have to say "You Know Joss Whedon? He's the guy who created Buffy."

Then I'll have to do my best... It's not that easy to find Firefly here (and I can't pay lots and lots of money for it, at the moment).

That's my dream. The people around me have got used to me saying "Joss Whedon" as if it was someone they should know who it is (which they of course should). But yes, oh yes...
 
It should hopefully pick up when the trailer becomes attached to more films, such as Star Wars (which it apparently will be in the UK).

During film studies we were discuss synergy, which is where a company has several different "outlets" (for lack of a better word). So for example Warner Bros own a record label and are part of AOL and Time magazine, which means when a WB film is released they can promote it.

So I was thinking, Serenity is owned by Fox which is of course one of the biggest media outlets because of Mr Murdoch (who for once comes in useful). I dunno about the USA but here in the UK it will mean that if they want they could put The Sun behind it. The Sun is the biggest selling newspaper (but not exactly the best quality) so they could offer free tickets, interviews, soundtrack CDs etc with the newspaper, which would mean a LOT of promotion for the film.
 
Actually Firefly is Fox. Serenity is Universal.

I wonder what the details of that deal are btw. Like who owns the marketing rights now? Will Universal be marketing stuff like a Serenity soundtrack, with Fox selling stuff like Mal and River action figures, or did Universal buy the complete rights to everything?

My impression is Universal seems to be handling Serenity promotion at least right now.

Then we went to the movies where we saw Serenity. Yup the Firefly movie. Oh and Joss Whedon was there and I got his autograph and the movie was amazing and it makes me wanna watch the 14 eps of Firefly.

Rod Serling"”because he was in front of the camera narrating. Hitchcock, 'cause he was almost a "brand" at that point and he'd made a name in movies. Even today, Chris Carter, David E. Kelly...only borderline "famous".

Another thing, Joss seems to have a very strong thematic and character-driven "vision". But it seems like most top moviemakers often have a distinct visual style too. With all the restrictions and collaboration of TV, it's hard to know, but...I wonder how his visual filmmaking style will evolve? That's one thing I'm curious to see in Serenity...
 
I really wanna see these Reavers everyone's talking about. They say they're kind of horrifying.

They say River has a visually distinctive fighting style too.
 
The only place ive really heard of Serenity talk is from the internet, havent heard any of it from the television(such as E!) or theatres.
 
Well yeah, but that's kind of the point. Compare it to others such as Blair Witch and LOTR. That's what happens. The trailer is made available on the internet, and the buzz begins.

Gradually newpapers begin to pick up on it. That's begun. As I said previously I get Google news alerts on the subject. Regional papers are starting to mention what they think they see coming. I'll try to find you links when I get around to it.
 
Has anyone seen the Serenity trailer in the movie theater? If so, which movie?

I half expected to see it before the 12:01 Episode III, but no dice. Woulda been a good target audience I think.
 
I heard it played in some theatres that were showing Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I was reading the reason it wasn't played before the Star Wars movie was because there was a giant line-up of movies that wanted that spot. I'm thinking maybe they were paying for it. I guess Serenity just didn't want the spot bad enough.

a mini review of an early screening

I just saw "Serenity" at a super early sneak preview last week while in Vegas. I loved the Firely TV series and pretty much everything Joss did for TV. The film I didn't dig so much. Actually, I was very disappointed. The characters and tone of the film are much colder than the series, the western elements are pretty much totally gone, and the plots were derivative. I hope they can fix it but I doubt it. Die-hard fans seem to think the guy can do no wrong. For me, the movie pales in comparison to the series, in a MAJOR way.
