The Slayer Activation Spell

Nothing in the prophecy was about his vampireism though, it only needed someone it saw as her soulmate, and from the foundation of their attraction, it grows something inside both of them that makes them have sex. Being a vampire might have been part of it, but the prophecy didn't call for the other person to be a Vampire, or a vampire with a soul. Ying to her yang, could just be it needed a man and a women, the whole point of Twilight was for the two people to have sex, being a vampire had nothing to do with it.

No, thats Willows initial theory, but it's later revealed the powers are a "gift" from Twilight, nothing to do with the dead slayers at all.

Thanks for the clarification, so from a Spuffy point of view, does that mean that Spike is definitely not Buffy's soul mate then? It seems like a dangerous notion to put forth so arbitrarily, I'd have thought there would have been more uproar about it?

Also, this seems to contradict the stuff Whistler says in Buffy, he recruited Angel because he thought he was going to save the world, but we also know Whistler was in on the twilight thing, does that mean Whistler only ever chose Angel to fulfil the twilight prophecy... seems like a silly choice, surely it would have been easier to get Buffy to ying/yang with a regular human?

You'd think! I think the last debate I mentioned this in, the reply was something about it being Buffys choice not the universes (denial 🙂)

I'm a little confused on the Whistler stuff, cuz I've only read Angel and Faith once. Presumably the stuff he said in the series was a lie, about not thinking Buffy and Angel would fall in love.
He seems to suggest that after years of doing good things and doing bad things to keep the balance, he decided to be more active in fixing the balance. He says he chose Angel to mirror his parents. His dad was an agent of the Powers and his mom was a pure blood demon, he liked the symmetry that had with Buffy and Angel.
I can't remember if he says he starts to believe the whole twilight thing before he got Angel on his path, or decided he liked the idea of it being Buffy and Angel after they got together.
He also says something about it being destiny, but not predestined, that they had a choice, so it was never a definite thing.
Whistlers whole part confused me, I have to reread Angel and Faith again, I didn't get the season 8 story till I reread them all again back to back and then it made more sense.

The way I always took it was, it was destiny becasue it happened. But it didn't have to happen, had Buffy chosen not to got go down to the Master, some other slayer could have done it at another time, but becasue she did it became destiny, if that makes sense?

We're just going to keep going in circles. I really, truly don't understand your logic and you don't seem to get mine, so I think we're at an impasse. Even after reading through this entire thread, I still don't believe the activation spell had any value whatsoever.

Also, and just because it's driving me nuts, Buffy has far more than three Slayer dreams throughout the series. Just off the top of my head, she has Slayer dreams several times about The Master in S1, starting in "Welcome to the Hellmouth", about Jenny Calender and Angel in S2, about the Gentlemen in "Hush", a ton about Dawn and at least one about The First and the Turok-Han in S7. So...yeah, more than three.

Well thats not true, part of the spell was the effect on balance. Part of the Firts plan was for evil to outbalance good, so it could enter every man, women and child. By activating all of the potential slays it shifted the balance is the exact opposite direction, there was no way to defeat the First, the balance had to be shifted to good, the activation spell did that.

Okay, but even so, they are all related directly to her current situation. She's not getting dreams about people in danger or horrific nightmares. The dreams are only portrayed as nightmares for Dana, and thats cuz it's a whole different situation.

But...if the amulet still goes off and does its thing, destroying all the Turok-Han, then what does The First do? It's plan is pretty much moot.

But...if the amulet still goes off and does its thing, destroying all the Turok-Han, then what does The First do? It's plan is pretty much moot.

Yeah, but no one knew that that's what the amulet was going to do. At the time Buffy and Willow came up with the plan for the spell, all they knew was that the amulet was supposed to be worn by a champion and that it would help. Nothing more.

But...if the amulet still goes off and does its thing, destroying all the Turok-Han, then what does The First do? It's plan is pretty much moot.

I dont think so, the plan was to kill the potentials, to end the slayer line. The plan was never to release the Turok-Han, if that was the plan, why didn't it just release them?
It had to end the slayer line, so that Good no longer had a Slayer on it's side, then release his army so that evil outnumbered good, the Turok-Han were just numbers basically.
If they never did the spell and killed the army The First could just regroup it's army.

The First now, thanks to the spell, has to kill strong slayers, who know who they are and the power they have (as the scoobies has informed every one of them), and the slayer is no longer a solitary figure. It's a completely different situation.

There are a number of other factors, like there are other hell dimensions, The First could just go to Cleveland and work on opening the Hellmouth there. Continuing to kill potentials.

The Slayer line was irrevocably altered, it can never be fixed, whatever vulnerability The First could exploit, could be exploited forever, all it needed was to kill the potentials and outnumber good. The only way to actually defeat The First is to do the complete opposite, have good completely outnumber evil, which is what Buffy did.

Also they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did in the cave without the new slayers, Spikes amulet may never have gotten to activate.

Was it Willow's spell that activated the potentials to be slayers? The object used in the spell was the Scythe - a slayers weapon. Anyone could use that weapons but it had been magically charged to recognize a slayer so that its full power could be accessed. Would any spell activate all potentials or was the scythe just a catalyst, it enabled Willow to have access to those who founded the scythe. I regard the Shadowmen to be like the Watchers, people who worked upon the guidance of those who founded the slayers.
When Willow did the spell Kennedy referred to her as a Goddess, but was she? Her hair went white - similar to the guardians hair colour. Was it the guardians age that made her hair white or was it white because she was a guardian? If it was the latter then Willow was created a guardian for a second or two, long enough for her to have access to the founder of the slayers. By that process you'd get all potentials as slayers.
When a potential was attacked by a Turok Ahn or a bringer she'd lose but having extra slayer strength made her strong enough she could defend herself.
About when the Amulet activated, I saw it as ready to activate when enough evil was killed so that it could wipe out the rest.
Could the First re-activated in another hellmouth? I think of only one hell with a lot of entry/exit points (mouths of hell), and there could have been an entry/exit point in Cleveland. But I saw the Amulet as having killed the First and all it's forces so there would be no evil to get out of that hellmouth.
As far as I'm concerned the series should end with the battle/war having been won, so that would mean heaven on earth. That might be why I have never even looked at a comic, it didn't make sense to carry it on, apart from putting money in people's pockets.

Then why is that never stated on the show? Why is it never said that expanding the number of Slayers defeats The First? As Xin Rong said, by extension, why not just do that spell from home? Why invade the Hellmouth at all? That makes no sense whatsoever if the release of the Turok-Han isn't a big part of The first's plan. The alternative is that Buffy and company were essentially just marching in there to die, especially if they didn't know what the amulet did in advance (which I don't think they did).

And really, 1800 Slayers doesn't exactly "outnumber evil" either. There were thousands and thousands of Turok-Han in the Hellmouth.

I don't know. It sounds like conforming open-ended parts of the show to a theory you have. If I'm missing something on the show or in the comics where it says that the Slayer activation spell was essential to defeating The First then by all means, please fill me in on where.

fair enough, but the First cannot be killed so long as evil exists, it is an embodiment of all the evil in the world. Ironically, the only person who could have killed the first in our dimension was Dark Willlow when she tried to end the world in season 6

By that logic, would it not have made more sense to do the spell, but not open the hellmouth?

I guess that could have been an option, but the problem I'd see with that is the First has no time limit on it's plan, had they done the spell and not opened the Hellmouth, The First could keep growing his army (he says it's growing everyday) and he could have kept picking off the slayers.

The idea was that there is no way to defeat the First, the group had to wait for The First to be ready, they literally couldn't do anything till the First was ready to move. His army was protected in the hellmouth and he couldn't be hurt.

Even as active slayers, without destroying the Firsts army the girls have to live in similar conditions, just waiting for that day The First is ready.

Also activating all the slayers wouldn't fix the balance of power that seems to be an issue, The balance in BtVS seems to be in evils favour, but for whatever reason that is the balance BtVS had. The balance was majorly shifted cuz they destroyed the army and destroyed a hellmouth while bumping up the number of slayers from 2 to 1800.

Also, if Spike had gone in alone, with the amulet, he could have just hid and waited for it to activate, he didn't need the canon fodder that was newly activated potentials

While I love the idea of just chucking Spike down there and hoping he doesn't get caught. I don't think that could have worked.
Mainly cuz they didn't know if the amulet would do anything or what it would do once activated.

I'm not saying the whole plan in Chosen was an excellent plan, just the concept of the activation plan. The plan is Chosen is pretty bad, there is no reason to activate the slayers AFTER going into the Hellmouth, they should have done that at Buffys house then headed down to the school, they should have bulldozed the building so vamps couldn't escape into the sunlight above and I guess they should have sent Spike in first to stand around and see if anything would happen.

My own personal head-canon on the amulet is, it never would have worked if they weren't going to win. I dont think it's a coincidence that the amulet decides to activate once we get to a moment in the battle were everything is going wrong, then it's all turned around and it starts building momentum that Buffy is winning. Something comes over Buffy and she comes back more powerful, something happens to all the girls they all start fighting stronger and getting the upper hand. Then Spike takes over and finishes them off.

There's no reason why the amulet activates at that particular moment, but thats why I think it does.
If all it took was someone more then human to wear it, it should have just activated the moment it was put on, something else was at play there.

A lot of the stuff on the show isn't answered on the show, there was never an in show reason for no slayer being called! I never said it's just down to expanding the number of slayers and the army had no part of it. It was the army being defeated, the hellmouth being destroyed and 1800 new slayers getting powers that messes with the balance. If the First says his plan is for his army to overrun the world, thus throwing the balance to evil and he can basically become corporal, then it's just logical that activating a bunch of new slayers and destroying his army is the exact opposite of that.

Destroying the army was definitely part of it, had they not they'd still be fighting the first, even with 1800 slayers.

The balance does seem to be in evils favour, but it seems that BtVSs version of balance isn't 50/50, Whistler says he helps maintain the balance, and he's done bad stuff, if the balance was 50/50 he'd have done nothing but good stuff all his life. For whatever reason the balance isn't 50/50 thats just part of the shows mythology.

Ok, your argument in hemorrhaging with flaws. The balance was not in evil's favor, that's kinda the whole point, the balance between good and evil, was 'balanced', hence the first's speech, the good vs evil, balancing the scales, I'm over it bit.

So activating the slayers, without opening the hellmouth, would have shifted the balance in good's favor.

The amulet activates when it does for dramatic effect, there is no reason to infer that is somehow sentient and chose to activate at a particular moment.

The first could pick of potentials with bringers, but could he have done the same thing with fully pledged slayers, I don't think so.

Without the amulet, Buffy and co would have lost the fight with the turok han, they had no chance of winning, which suggests that the First, for whatever reason could not maintain a doorway between the Turok Han's dimension and earth.

This argument right here is what I hate about S7.

Okay, carry on.

Yeah but good and evils balance seems to be majorly on evils side. You can have any number of vampires, but you can only have 1 slayer.

So activating the slayers, without opening the hellmouth, would have shifted the balance in good's favor.

But the First had an ever growing army, it just had to keep waiting, which is could do, till it outbalanced the slayers.

The amulet activates when it does for dramatic effect, there is no reason to infer that is somehow sentient and chose to activate at a particular moment.

Sorry, but thats irrelevant. It's 100% true, but irrelevant. If you wanna use that logic, there is no point in discussing anything from the show; Willow went evil, not because she had abused magic, but becasue it was a cool storyline to have Willow be the bad guy. Spike didn't actually mean to try and rape Buffy, they just needed a storyline to have him go off and get a soul. And your entire argument about the activating spell being a bad idea is gone cuz it made for a great scene and it all worked out - all true, but irrelevant to discussing the internal workings of the show, no point in applying storyline logic to it.

The first could pick of potentials with bringers, but could he have done the same thing with fully pledged slayers, I don't think so.
Me either, but bringers weren't the only thing he had, he could have released more uber-vamps.

Without the amulet, Buffy and co would have lost the fight with the turok han, they had no chance of winning, which suggests that the First, for whatever reason could not maintain a doorway between the Turok Han's dimension and earth.

How do you know? The Turok Han were bottlenecked into fighting Buffy, that gives the scoobies an advantage, they could have kept going, hell even after Willow had recovered and come down and helped. they could have legged it out of the hellmouth, regrouped, vamps are trapped by sunlight.
You can't definitely say they would have lost, when we dont know what else could have happened. Them loosing was a possibility, but they went down there not knowing if the amulet would work, thinking they could win and they have a pretty good track record being right about that.

I don't agree with your argument per se but appreciate seeing "legged it" on the internet! GRMA
Thinking back over this issue, I'm now inclined to think of what Willow actually did as no spell at all. An actual spell would have been selectively empowering the Potentials there in Sunnydale while keeping all of the other Potentials in the world totally unaffected and normal. Instead of taking the time to configure such a spell, Willow just figuratively tossed a lighted match into a powder keg, activating every girl indiscriminately, with no control or focus whatsoever. What she did might have been the actual reason why no more Slayers were called before Fray's time. The energy, for lack of a better word, that activated the Calling was so depleted in that one instant that it took centuries to renew, recharge, or replenish itself, resulting in what might very well be a temporary cessation of any more new Slayers being Called.

Remember, Joss verified that the battle with Twilight in Season 8 was, in fact, the battle shown in "Fray" that expelled all of the demons and vampires from Earth. Since Buffy changed the outcome of that battle, demons and vampires weren't expelled, so the Slayers are still needed. In Fray's reality, no Slayer was Called before her because none was needed. Now, however, they will be, and there just might not be any new Potentials created, meaning that the existing Slayers are in effect, the last of their kind for centuries to come.

Willow just might have succeeded where the First Evil failed in destroying the Slayer Line.

No not at all.

Willow spell doesn't seem to be a new spell, all it did was bend the rules of the last Slayer spell, removing the 'only one' clause.
That had no effect what so ever on the amount of slayer energy out there, seeing how the Slayer power doesn't move from one girl to the next, each girl has the power it seems to be an unlimited source. New slayers are activated in season 8, so the process wasn't stopped becasue of Willow. She didn't drain the slayer energy, it was still in effect, just with a new set of rules. The activation spell is not to blame for the no slayers in Fray.

They haven't made it clear in season 9 whats happened now. The Slayers got to keep their powers cuz they were inside them, and potentials have the power inside them, but presumably the spell that activates them once they come of age was no longer in effect, now that magic is back we could see something new in regards to new slayers.
Remember, Joss verified that the battle with Twilight in Season 8 was, in fact, the battle shown in "Fray" that expelled all of the demons and vampires from Earth.

Has he? I'm 99% sure he hasn't, you mentioned this before and when you were asked for a source, you said it was your opinion, but Whedon hasn't actually confirmed it.

Since Buffy changed the outcome of that battle, demons and vampires weren't expelled, so the Slayers are still needed.
That was never the outcome of Twilight, it's the opposite, all the good people go to Twilight, all the vampires stay on Buffys world, the plans are very similar but they dont actually match up in a lot of ways.

There is a lot of intentional mistakes in Fray, historical inaccuracies, like how it's named the battle of Starbucks and such, but had Twilight been successful, Buffy and Angel would have left earth, they would have pulled across some of the population, but wouldn't have been able to save all and they would have been in a new universe, with no demons. Maybe if this version were true, it was one of those historical errors and rather then the demons and magic being pulled out, they were left behind and Fray is actually the future of the Twilight universe.

But then there are some problems with that, firstly how would Buffy have travelled there in season 8, unless it wasn't just time travel but jumped dimensions also?

Also Fray mentions the "last great Watcher Gates" who sacrificed himself, which could be seen as Giles death, but with the historical errors. But in order for Giles to die, Twilight doesn't go ahead. I guess you could make it work, by saying that After Buffy and Angel reject Twilight, Twilight takes over Angel, kills Giles and before Buffy destroys the Seed, Twilight drags Buffy into the new universe, it also takes much of the population with it (would it?), and seals off the old universe with all evil behind it. And Frays time just has it mixed up about which who went though the portal?

But even so, it doesn't actually line up, Frays time line is a mixture of both the Twilight portal scenario and the Seed being destroyed ending magic, and the two are juxtaposing scenarios, they were never something that mixed.

Also the comics suggest Frays time is still the future. Fray wanted to stop Buffy going back to the past, so their world wouldn't change, but Buffy does go back and things dont change, meaning everything Buffy has done is still heading towards Frays time.

Like I said, Willow didn't drain the energy, new slayers were still activated, this theory is canonly already disproved, presumably had the Seed not been destroyed they would have continued to be activated.

I has to be a spell that Willow cast. If it wasn't a spell, how did those Japanese vampires reverse it and drain a slayer of her power before killing her?
