The Slayer Line Runs Through Buffy After Bargaining...

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I hadn't seen this thread in a while, thought I might get some of the newbie opinions on it 😀

Muah ha ha haha

You have a real evil streak in you, missy 😉

I don't think the Slayer line runs through Buffy in Bargaining. Once Buffy died the first time it was handed to Kendra. Buffy never had it after that.

But that's just my opinion. :icon12: It's okay to be a little evil sometimes.

Why do you think that the slayer line runs through Buffy after Bargaining, Cordelia? I think it runs through Faith, since Buffy already turned in her "get-a-new-slayer-free" card when she died in season 1, but I'd like to hear why you think otherwise.

I dont think it runs through Buffy either, it just wouldnt make sense why it would jump to Faith to Buffy when Faith was well alive. It would most likely still run through her than Buffy. But did anybody think that maybe the line runs through both of them?

But can the line run through both of them? The slayer is supposed to be the ONE girl, etc. Buffy screwed it up by dying and getting revived, so the line was passed on, so it went to Kendra and then to Faith, so wouldn't Faith be the only one with the slayer line?

Oh Cordelia you are a naughty girl 😉

I think nerd4hire has made such a good, consistent, and compelling argument after all the discussions I tend to agree with him. However, beyond that I just watched the episode of controversy. I don't think Buffy flatlined. When Willow enters the room the lights flicker on and off.She brings with her this awesome power thats disturbing even the electrical forces in the room so I don't think the equipment was functioning promptly and I don't think at any point buffy was declared dead by normal human defintions and most importantly she wasn't considered dead by the spiritual world hence the no new slayer being called. We also have to take into acct when she died in Prophecy Girl the prophecy had been made for a while so there wasn't really anything to question. The powers had "known" for a while it was coming so they had Kendra in mind before Buffy was actually killed by the master. Later on I think the powers that be gave themselves pause before activating a new slayer willy nilly. I can't see any argument for why the line would run with Faith and above all else Buffy was THE slayer. Faith was a slayer. The SIT's became slayers but Buffy was THE slayer. Slayer, The.

Gah, this ain't even funny! 😀

But yea, I agree with you, the slayer line went back to Buffy in Bargaining.. Buut, I'm always interested in hearing new theories about this 'cause I have yet to hear a theory that really works 100%..

I agree with Cordelia and Epo...

My argument stems from watching the end of season seven.

First of all, Buffy is the only one who does (and possilbe can) pull the scythe from the rock. Now, I'm not sure if Faith could've also, because we didn't see her try, but from that perspective, it seems that Buffy is the one who is entitled to it.

Second, because that's not always proof enough, I think back to Chosen. In the huge fight in the the Hellmouth, it appears that the fight is not going so well as soon as Buffy is stabbed and falls to the ground, apperantly out of the fight. As soon as that happens, you see all the newly made slayers, and Faith begin to succumb to the ubervamps, getting taken down. Here, I make an obvious connection that when Buffy goes down, so does everyone else. Why? I assume that it can be explained that because Buffy still holds the slayer line, all other activated slayers... who are not suppposed to exist at this time, follow her physical action. When she is defeated, they are defeated. The second that Buffy stands up and wipes out three vamps with the scythe, you miraculously see the other slayers begin their comeback.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it as well!

I don't see how the second point has any correlation with the line running through Buffy. If anything wouldn't that make the sit's stronger or at least one of them. The one the powers meant to be the next slayer. Buffy being hurt in the past has never effected Faith. Buffy died and I don't believe that effected Faith in the slightest. It was dispiriting to see her fall but an actual effect on the line or their powers...I'm not seeing it

But you see, we have no proof of this. How do we not know that Faith's power decreased or increased while Buffy remained dead for those few months? We don't.

I think it is fairly obvious that Buffy was re-inserted in to the slayer line as THE Slayer. However, we do not know if this title is shared with Faith or not.

The clues we have so far:

  • The First's comments to Buffy regarding that she is THE slayer.
  • Buffy's ability to remove the scythe from stone.
  • Caleb's speeches to Buffy regarding that she is the strongest, fastest, one true original slayer. Also, see his comments to Faith in "Dirty Girls".
  • The Guardian knowing that Buffy is the Slayer.
  • Buffy's defeat in "Chosen" led to the other SITs and Faith falling, for a short while, in that battle.

And there are many, many other hints throughout Season Seven....

Beyond the death. When Buffy was hurt in the past when Faith was around did Faiths power ever increase or decrease? They fought side by side a few episodes and Buffy got knocked around a bit and Faith never became less or more a slayer. In the final big fight in season 3 there was never any noticeable change.

You can't really point to the scythe because you can't say whether Faith would/wouldn't have been able to take it out as well.

Okay, I see all the points that you guys have, even if I don't think the line runs through Buffy, but what does that have to do with Bargaining?

in 'get it done' the shadow men tell buffy that SHE is the hellmouth's last guardian. there is no mention of faith.
i'm torn on this subject. i can see both sides of the argument.
faith is my all time fave character and i want her to be the true slayer. but i can see where people believe buffy to be the true slayer, and i have to say that it makes sense, althouhg, i'm not sure this post does...
when buffy was brought back from the dead in 'bargaining' something obviously happened to her body, both physicaly and spiritually. she was altered enough to confuse the chip in spike's brain, was she also altered enough to redirect the slayer line back through buffy herself?
this to me is one possibility that no one has really thought about.

Yeah, but are slayers always stationed on hellmouths? Maybe it's just her responsibility to watch over the hellmouth, while Faith battles other big evils in other places.

Faith was never a guardian of the hellmouth anyway so there wouldnt be any reason for her to be mentioned. Its just like Kendra, she was the called Slayer after Buffys first death(which can go the same way with the whole bargaining thing, when buffys heart stopped, Kendra was automatically called as the next slayer, but than Xander came and a brought her back to life again, except Buffy was dead for like a min or 2, and not like 6 months like in bargaining) but she was never meant to guard sunnydale, she had other adventures. Each slayer is located to different spots in the world, they dont take over the last slayers former land

ok, PS, i agree with that.
but have you thought about buffy's answer to that statement?
shadow man: 'you are the hellmouth's last guardian.'
buffy: 'latest. you mean latest.'
shadow man: 'no. last.'

it would be wrong for us to think that buffy was the first slayer to be posted on the sunnydale hellmouth, and if things had played out in the traditional way, she wouldn't have been that last.
when 'get it done' took place there were dozens of potentials in sunnydale, and faith would soon have been on her way there, yet the shadow men still called buffy 'the last guardian...'

No, Buffy probably wasn't the first slayer on that hellmouth, but that doesn't mean that she wasn't the last. She was the last gaurdian of the hellmouth.

but if things had run normally, and buffy stayed dead in 'prophecy girl' who's to say that kendra wouldn't have permenantly moved to sunnydale to protect the hellmouth, since her watcher sent her there in 'what's my line'?
(this thread has taken a dramatic twist)
the shadow men told buffy that SHE was the last guardian. the guardian (old woman in the crypt) knew that BUFFY was THE slayer. and caleb and ther first always referred to buffy as THE slayer.
plus, in angel, when angelus realized there was a slayer in L.A, he calls sunnydale, assuming its buffy. when he realizes buffy is in sunnydale he says, 'oh, it's the other one'
nothing really to do with the thread, but hey...
