The Smith - Rock debacle at the Oscars

They say that AMPAS heads Rubin and CEO Hudsonrather gently suggested to Smith’s longtime rep Meredith O’Sullivan backstage that the actor leave the Dolby. Even before the likes of Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry consoled Smith, the then Best Actor nominee’s rep passed the request on to him. Perhaps not capturing the severity of the moment, Smith supposedly said he wanted to stay, to say sorry and that was that.

He was actually not instructed to leave. It was a suggestion. That’s not taking control of the situation. They failed miserably at handling this. To begin with, no audience member should go towards the stage unless they are accepting an award or presenting an award. When Will got up, all they did was allow the cameras to follow him. An usher should have stopped him. But even then, following the altercation, he should have been immediately escorted out of the theater to a private area to determine appropriate next steps.

Lets think about it,
both Smith and Rock are actors.
But lets think about that slap; considering the length of Smith's swing and Rock's reaction. That to me was poor acting but then there was Smith's tears and the time before Rock's reaction.
Do I think the situation was staged - no, as it was done so very badly. Just that it was stage managed by the both of them so very badly.
They should both have gotten ten years.

I feel like with a lot of things these days, there was an overreaction to the whole thing. He should have been told to leave - but it is understandable that no one knew what to do because this was so unprecedented. I feel like 10 years is a bit much - making him stay home next year would have sufficed in my opinion. Make him miss giving the award to the next winner. He embarrassed himself, and tarnished his name and his award - I think that’s the adequate punishment. We don’t need to destroy every person who does something with bad judgment.

10 years does seem a bit excessive, but essentially it just means he is going to miss out on 10 parties so really not that big a deal ! and it will probably get reduced a couple of years down the line once everyone has calmed down. Although I wonder if he can still be nominated for an Oscar during this time.

But I cant believe people are still trying to justify what he did. I don't think he should be hung out to dry (and the calls for him to lose his Oscar are going too far), but it is never acceptable to resort to violence based on a joke. Will Smith admits he was totally out of order and that he needs to be a better person, and yet some people are still trying to condone it.

I wonder if they would be defending him quite so much if a female comedian had made the joke and he had slapped her

A little off Topic : Chris Rock appeared on some episode of the fresh prince of bel-air. A series where Will Smith was a member of the principal cast.
