did anyone actually see a real change in spike since he got a soul? he doesnt seem to be like angel was at first at all.. full of guilt and remorse and all..

in fact, he didnt change at all. imagine if he would loose his soul now.. it would still be the same spike! its nothing like angel.. he and angelus are so different, one is so more evil than the other one..

any thoughts?
 
Angel's got that whole Irish Catholic guilt thing going for him. He needs to spend some weekly sessions jamming with the Wolfram & Hart staff head doctors!

Spike, on the other hand, is Spike. Angel broods internally, Spike directs his angst outward, doing things like making jokes at others expense. Which, granted, is what he always did anyway, so it's hard to see the difference. Angel is a whimpering puppy, Spike is a nippy puppy.
 
LOL at Lazy Dolphin's explanation-I, personally, think this one is an inconcistency on the part of the writers-to me, it stands to reason that the Mamma's boy poet who always got made fun of would be the one to mourn what he's done, and the drunken whoring Irishman would have been more realistic about it-following their past characters to me it makes sense if they had switched the stories.
 
LOL LD! I agree. I think he is going through something. I definately see a difference. Like I have said before, I have always been attracted to Spike types. I would say that Spike is more internalizing it though. He has to keep his tough boy exterior. But he is suffering. He DID go through hell. I mean come on...the guy just started to get on with the torture of having a soul when the First got a hold of him...he had more than just his own guilt to deal with. But he didn't just stay that way. He pushed forward and beat some of those demons. He realized there was more to be done so he did what he had to do to move forward. Now, like LD said, he just lets it out here and there with his jokes and jabs. I would hope that he would not be like Angel. Everyone handles things differently. And Spike is a man of action. He hasn't had enough time to adjust and the most obvious thing to do is to fall back into old defenses. He hasn't had the chance to do much else what with the going crazy, fighting in another apocolypse, and dying. And now he's suddenly a ghost that's tied to his rival. Who has the time to brood? Angel had years and years alone to wonder and suffer and brood properly. And one other thing is that Angelus was supposedly twice as bad so of course his transformation was going to be more extreme. Spike always had a soft side to him. Just my oppinion though.

I think the writers made the two transitions from evil to not-so different to illustrate how different Angel and Spike are. I don't think it's inconsistent with their characters either, because Spike and Angel got their souls back under VERY different circumstances, so of course they are going to act differently.
 
what rayne said makes lots of sense but still.. i just feel that he hasnt changed a bit.. in angel, he even reminds me of the old spike, s2 spike.. ok so i didnt watch that many angel episodes yet (waiting for kaos to bring them to my place hehe) but still..

to my opinion, spike should have acted more like the william he used to be after getting his soul back.. only that would mean the end of the spike that we know, and the character would loose all his fans. so the writers just kept him as he is..
 
why should Spike have acted more like William? Angel didn't act like Liam. Souled vampires aren't vampire bodies with human personalities and souls. They have the demon soul there as well, the human soul just tends to suppress it.

Great point spike's_bitca...it WAS under completely different circumstances...

ladykaos28, I think you're right...we should just ignore it. Besides, we didn't come in before Angel got his soul back so they could say whatever they want about how long it took and how hard it was...but we went through it with Spike and lets face it, they just seriously lack the time to give him the same grieving...or he would serve no point but to huddle in a corner crying and screaming and brooding for the rest of the series...lol...I'm just happy the characters are the way they are...yay them! :: tu ::
 
WatcherWes, i dont know how Liam acted.. i dont know much about Angel's past :\

And i the whole 'soul' thing can be debated.. it all starts with the question "whats a soul for B/A writers?" i think they see the concept of 'soul' more like a conscience.. because a real soul, well what it is to me anyways, is more like ..the source of life within you. ..so a demon with a soul just doesnt make any sense at all since demons arent supposed to be alive. So to me, after getting a soul, a demon should totally return to its human self.. thats why i think that a soulful spike should be more like william was.. but then it all depends on the interpretation of 'soul' that the writers have...

..anyways, i dont want to start bablling on the subject, it gets too philosophical for this kind of board 🙂
 
I get what you mean Vampirisha. I thought the same thing when the 6th season ended the way it did I expected to come back to this silly sweet little mamas boy. But I think W.W. has it with the whole demon/soul cohabitation thing. Some of the personality traits of the deomn are bound to be adopted by the ensouled Spike...after all, that's who he was for so long. But I also agree that a lot of it really does have to do with the way the writers interperate what a soul is. Would'nt you just love to spend a day at the big table with them and ask all the questions about this kind of thing that you want...?

I'd be asking questions REALLY fast then I'd just slip in "What's James's number?" and they wouldn't even realize what I had done...mwahahahahaha!!! Then would come the restraining order...I need to get another hobby...

I totally agree! Spike knew what he was doing. He knows what he has done. But he is not exactly the brooding type is he?
 
Nope...Spike is a man of action...God I love that...and it's not just different personalities and different circumstances but also different situations. Look at everything AROUND the two of them when they each got thier souls back...
 
Spike was made fun of before and he was being walked all over in both his human and his vamp days. Acting tough is the only way he knows how to "protect" himself. That's how he's always been. When he was made, he didn't want to be the sniveling wimp he thought he was when he was human. Not then and not now.

Angel, however, never wanted to be Angelus was a bad boy. He killed and maimed for years and Angel was really tortured thinking of him, so he broods.
 
There doesn't seem to be a difference. However this difference between big bad Spike and Buffy's lil lapdog, are huge! I don't really like the character he's become especially when he was so great to start with. He was so much better before. I still love him, still think he's sexy, but it's just not the same. i miss my bad boy.
 
They both act different around Buffy. Spike goes from the back-talking bad boy to the sensitive guy. Angel goes from beating people up for info, brooding, and being dark to smiling. There's something about Buffy...

That's why Spike is "Love's Bitch" or a "Fool for Love." He's always being rejected 'cause sometimes he's a pushover in love, so he acts tough, but he has a soft side.
 
That he does. He's soft and suffering beneath his rough and tough exterior. He's not exactly around anyone that he trusts let alone anyone that he can open up to...but I think that will change very soon...
