The Spider Demon?
(Based on Season 7 Episode 5 Selfless)

Willow had gone to the building that housed all twenty eight boys of the Capa Dei Reus branch of happy chappies at the Sunnydale University that evening. After Willow entered the hallway she called out hoping that one of them could direct her to her friend but there was no reply.

Opening the door Willow wandered into the television lounge - stopping as quickly as she could. There was twenty six of the boys in the room though each of them lay dead, having had their heart, lungs and every blood vessel removed.

Willow was perplexed as none of the lads bodies bore a look of a painful expression. Willow had rung Buffy thinking that a demonic creature must have been involved, Buffy was said she was with Spike not that that would stop her, they went to see what Willow had stumbled on.

Waiting outside the main door Willow was happy to see Buffy and Spike when they arrived.
“I have had a good look about this Capa Dei Reus place but I cannot see where it got in or left,” said Willow.

Buffy looked at the bodies,
“I’m guessing that whatever it was that did that it came from down below,” said Buffy.
Spike muttered an agreement. “From Beneath you, it Devours!” exclaimed Spike.

Willow gasped as soon as she heard Spikes announcement.
“Why would you think that it or they come from Australia?” asked Willow.
With Buffy both the girls laughed at Spike.

“Oh sod of, there is something you missed missy red. Spread the curtains up there and you will see the top windows have been broken, I’m not sure if someone or something broke their way in or even broke their way out,” said Spike.

Buffy, Spike and Willow left by the front door to go to the ground under the broken window. Spike pointed to the shattered glass on the ground, then to the broken leaves on the bushes. Buffy pointed to the broken twigs they indicated that something had climbed on the tree recently.

“I’ve just had a thought,” said Willow
Willow took a vase out of her bag, she took three steps away from them and put a locket on her foot. Tipping the contents from the vase about her she began to chant.

“Beatums sit in nom ini D’Hoffrynis Fi at hoc spat ium, porta ad mundi um Arashmaharis,” stated Willow.
“Good grief, I’d never have thought she could do that,” said Spike.

“Do what? What did Willow just do?” asked Buffy.
“She just invoked the Lord of Arashmaharis, D’Hoffynis, Lord of all Vengeance Demons,” said Spike.

There was a flash of white light then the light faded to dark and a figure appeared.
“Behold, I am here, the Lord of Arashmaharis, the great oh hello Willow good to see you again, why am I here though?”

“I had a thought that one of your girls might have been at her work, it’d be quicker to ask you than keep looking,” said Willow.
D’Hoffryn looked about,

“Normally I’d chastise anyone who did that to me but well, I do like you miss Rosenberg though in this case, even though you called me for nothing as I feel nothing demonic here, it is nothing to do with any of my girls.

None of the three local girls did this they are all at other, well I won’t go into that but do take me seriously there is a strange taste here but it is not from a vengeance demon,” said D’Hoffryn.

Spike faced Buffy and asked her what could have caused the murders.
Buffy asked Spike and Willow who she should ask to find out who might know.

Spike turned to face Willow he was nonplussed, then he faced Buffy.
“I was not too sure who it might be though when Willow called on D’hoffryn I thought it was a vengeance demon,” said Spike.

“I thought it was a vengeance demon until D’hoffryn said it wasn’t any of his vengeance demons near here,” said Willow.
“I heard that though who are the three from near here? I know of Anya and that Halfrek but who could the other one be?” asked Buffy.

Both Buffy and Willow faced each other with blank looks. Spike interrupted them looking to each other.
“It may have been a girl that none of us know off,” he said.

Willow agreed with him.
“There is nothing to indicate that vengeance was a reason as the dead had the contents of their chests removed, had it been just their hearts I might agree with you,” said Willow.
“Then what could the reason be for the deaths?” asked Buffy.

They wandered outside the only window that faced the wooded area. Spike pointed to the top windows. “None of the other windows in the room face the outside and no others have broken panes over the garden. So the glass was broken out,” said Spike.

Spike looked at the ground at the base of the flowers.
“There are no footprints in the soil.”
Willow inspected the flowers that grew in the ground as did Buffy.

“I can see no damaged done to the flowers,” said Buffy.
Willow shook her head.
“So where does that leave us?” she asked.

Buffy looked to the broken panes of glass, she thought the broken area was big enough for a person to have climbed out of, she looked at the area under them, there was nothing that might have indicated that a person had clambered from the window frame.

Willow faced Buffy, she seemed to understand what Buffy was thinking.
“Could the person have held onto the wall while their feet were on the frame of the broken glass?”
“Yes but only if he or she had jumped over the garden into the tree,” said Willow.

Spike led them to the nearest tree he climbed up the tree trunk to if lowest branch, not seeing any marks on it he hauled himself up to the next branch.
“Here we are! There are several marks where people could have handed,” he exclaimed.

Buffy climbed to that spot,
“If the prints are here where some people landed could there be more, elsewhere?”
Willow was unable to state that was not possible though she could not answer Buffy as to how many had reached the tree or at what height they had landed on the tree.

Spike wandered on the grass under the tree.
“Hopefully they just dropped from the tree and didn’t try to swing away as far as they could. If they did swing as far as they could there is no way we can be sure how many have passed into the woods,” said Spike to the girls.

“There is a big old house to the west from here at the edge of town it could be where those who escaped from here have congregated.”
“I am not saying you are wrong Buffy but why do you say about the big old house as being to the west,” said Spike.

“I would have thought you would have noticed that, because you will be walking towards where the sun has set. Also I think they’d have gone this way as the town is on the other side of the tree and more likelihood of being seen,” said Buffy.

“I’d like to see what they have done to the house before I go on about what damaged if any they have done to the house. Apart from the marks on the tree there are none on the ground, maybe a couple of broken twigs on some bushes at chest height. That makes me wonder what sort of beings we are following animal, bird, insect there isn’t even any indication that it is a demon we are following,” said Spike.

“I see what you guys mean but you are forgetting the possibility that we are following aliens, or ghosts,” added Willow.
“If we are following a ghost or more than one ghost, who were we friends with who might have become a ghost?” asked Spike

“I think we can ignore anyone who might have become a vampire,” said Willow.
“Or a werewolf,” stated Buffy.

Spike smiled to them then continued.
“The only ghost I can think of, you would be right to think of her as a friend, she is Cassie.”

“I am so glad you two are here with me, while I am not afraid to go into that house alone I do feel much more comfortable with you two here,” said Buffy.
Willow looked at Buffy as if to ask why then added, “That place gives me the creeps,” she said.

“And that has nothing to do with the face at the window,” said Spike.
“What! Where! Who is it?” shouted Willow, questioning Spike.
“Oh, you believed me, sorry! Tee hee,” Spike announced.

Wandering through to open doorway into the house.

Willow grinned and looked at all the posters on each of the walls.
“A person might be forgiven for being wary about entering this place,” said Willow.
She looked about the room she was in.
“This place does have a fairly ripe reputation what with what the previous workings have been.”

Willow continued to look about the room for the type of people who may have gone there. Spike crept to be stood close to Willow, he was disgusted with Buffy’s behaviour.
“How could you show such a lack of compassion for your best friend.” He turned to face Willow

“And another thing, what is so scary about this place,” asked Spike.
Buffy pointed to the disfigured face in the window in front of her.
“Should we have waited outside in order to see who that is?” asked Buffy.

Willow looked to the face on the window.
“I was told never to look into the forest behind this house, there is a group of figures who are occasionally seen to be wandering between the trees.”

“I would want to see the colour of their eyes as some people in the forest were said to be successful devil worshippers.” said Spike.
Standing back Spike thought deeply about what he had just said.

“If you two can forget what it was that I just said you might actually be able to experience an unaffected sleep tonight in any one of the empty rooms here, Spike was happy at the thought of the fun there might be if they had spent time in the attic.

Both Willow and Buffy grimaced to Spike.
“That conjures up some scary sentiments of dark nights in the attic,” said Buffy.
“I would not have thought that a rooms name could cause either of you to have a sleepless night, although the word attic does conjure up scary thoughts,” said Spike.

Buffy and Willow ran across the wooden floor of the attic, both of them stamping every third step to have the unassuming Spike make note of where they were. He made a note of where the girls were, he also noted where the Spider Demons might have been they were being stalked by several Quokka’s, a creature that bore an uncanny resemblance to a rat at twice its normal size.

The girls jumped on the highly polished wooden floor that confronted Spike. He was shocked to discover the Quokka’s were themselves being chased by large animals that bore a resemblance to a Black Bear and to the appearance of a Rhodesian Ridgeback, the dogs growled yet sounded similar to the growl of the bear although its eyes caused one to think that its eyes bore hatred to all its prey.

Spike knew no such fear and would often stroke the creature not that the creature would like having Spike stroke them nor would it refrain from trying to bite him, no one was scared of its bite though they were increasingly concerned it could hold its bite as long as it wanted to. Being trapped in any one of the certain places caused concern for Spike, he had no idea if the creature concerned needed blood to survive, even if it needed the blood to keep a value of life.

Spike had never considered there be a need to carry a weapon. Willow stepped onto the top step of the flight of steps going down to the bottom of the house. Buffy wanted to know where they were going.
“Traditionally the attic would be regarded as the scariest place in any house yet without there being an attic the basement would be next,” stated Willow.

“Oh goody,” muttered Buffy,
She tried to smile as she followed Willow down from the top steps. Going down four steps Buffy was right behind Willow when suddenly Willow stopped in front of Buffy.

Muttering to Willow Buffy was not impressed by what Willow did then she looked about.
“Did you hear that?” asked Buffy.
Willow looked about but she never heard anything, before she asked the question what?

As the trio got closer to the bottom of the house there was the sound of a lot of people whispering at the time and it seemed to get louder as they drew closer to the basement.
Buffy glanced to Willow.

“Do we have to go into the basement?” asked Buffy.
Before she had time to utter another sound or hear a reply the lights on the walls lit up the steps in the passage.
Willow stepped through the opening then turned to see if Buffy was still behind her,

“You are not going to like this.”
Buffy looked to her.
“On the next rafter above our heads if you don’t look up it might appear as though there is a light like an electric light bulb above us,” said Willow.
“And if I do look up?” asked Buffy.

“You will see there is no electric light bulb above us, the brightness is coming from a burning skull, one that is on a rafter though you might need to realise the rafter is not on fire.”
“I’m getting the feeling that someone does not want us here,” said Spike.

Willow grinned to Buffy.
“Sorry to say this but I should have mentioned it to you, someone does not want me down there but I’ll be alright,” said Willow.
Buffy was at a loss of what to think.

“Do you remember that time when I was scary veiny and with black hair, did you know the saying?” asked Willow.
“What saying?” asked Buffy.
“How the devil protects his own!” Willow exclaimed Buffy smiled to Willow,

“No.” replied Buffy.
“Besides I love it when ghosts are seen to become real, all those scientists and religious zealots are faced with the truth they cannot accept.”
Willow grinned to Buffy,

“I do not think I have ever heard you say such a thing, that might indicate there is more to this life we have,” said Willow.
“Ask Spike what he thinks on the subject, although there is a number of levels in hell you will find the same if you go into heaven there are the same number of levels up there,” said Buffy.
Willow grimaced at the thought of the comparison at what Buffy had just said.

“Does that mean Spike considers there to be a place for the best of the worst in hell, if so then does it follow that there is a place for the best of the worst in Heaven?” asked Willow.
“If Spike was here would he know if the best of the worst in hell is also the best of the worst in heaven, makes you think don’t it?” asked Buffy.

Willow looked at the darkened openings along the passage.
“Are they the rooms where the dead are said to remain?” asked Willow.

Spike became amazed he was grateful when he saw Cassie sat beside him, he smiled to her and asked her how she was.
“Not bad though I am a bit concerned that some lads I knew formed together to get assistance against humans,” said Cassie.

Buffy and Willow finally found time to face Spike, they looked into the space near him.
“Who are you talking to?” asked Buffy.
Spike faced the girls then turned to look at Cassie.

“Why can’t they see you?” he asked.
Cassie smiled to Spike stopping them hearing her voice.
“What you have failed to realize is that I am a ghost, I don’t get seen unless I want others to see me and if there is a need for the reason to be,”

Cassie smiled to Spike. “Watch.”
Cassie went into a room off the passage where she allowed herself to become visible before she returned.
Willow was surprised happily to see Cassie.

“Cassie! Good to see you, how have you been?” asked Willow.
Looking about Willow asked Cassie why she was there.
“I heard about the deaths here and I was intrigued that it may have been those who wanted my death, it wasn’t though,” said Cassie.

Spike faced Willow and began to shake his head.
“There is something about what you are saying Cassie that does not make sense, why did you think it was those guys who did this?” he asked.

“I’ve been looking for them hoping to blame them for killing another so that I can force some retribution on them, not that I need to but it might be nice. I’ve spoken to those who are in the place my spirit exists and they say I can seek retribution,” said Cassie.

Willow wanted to know who had the authority to tell her what she could or could not do. Spike considered his own existence, he asked Cassie why had he been given the right to do what he had done and if so who could have given him permission?”

Cassie grinned,
“You could have done whatever you wanted to but you’d have to make it right. There are so many reasons why what you had done would be allowed or not. Humans have a habit of over populating the world when that occurs the evil beings can kill as many as they want.”

“Do you mean there is an actual balance,” said Willow.
“Does that mean that Buffy can kill as many evil beings as she wants?” asked Spike.
“If the balance needs to be rectified then yes but if to many evil ones upset the balance, then no.”

Spike looked to Cassie, “Who judges how many evil are allowed?” asked Spike.
“You misunderstand me there is no balance or good to evil there is only a balance of those numbers allowed on the planet, the number of all who make life easy to be,” said Cassie.

Willow looked to Spike then Cassie.
“Does that mean that a number has been agreed upon about how many this world can support and when that number is broken as many as needed can be ended, so those who were killed in that room how was the numbers affected?” asked Spike.

Cassie laughed to Spike, “I am not allowed to say what the difference should be else those who might wish to even the number out might begin to kill off those who they want to.
Spike began to smile to Cassie.

“Is it right to limit the numbers of those who come from the Hellmouth?”
“Should Buffy be made aware that the armies of hell can be attacked and defeated and no one would sit in judgment on her cause?” asked Spike
“I could say only time will tell but you should ignore that advice so go and make the world a better place,” said Cassie

"There are many other ghosts in these lower levels many of whom that have died though they are not the ones you’d think of,” said Cassie.
Spike soon found Buffy and was about to tell her though Buffy said she knew.
“When I am given permission by the powers then will the final battles begin,” said Buffy.
