The Spuffy Question

Buffy uses that freedom though. She breaks into other peoples offices and homes without permission. By S7 she's literally chucking people out of there own said homes.
She tries to murder Faith and didn't exactly hand herself in to the law for attempted murder over that.

So, how does that make Faith her shadow self? It doesn't.

I never thought Buffy disliked her sexuality

Not dislikes exactly but mutes/keeps hidden. Faith is fairly confident and brazen whilst Buffy is much more cautious.
In fact I'd say this is something that Faith mirrors in Buffy right up into S7; see the sexual chemistry in the basement between Faith and Spike contrasted with Buffy's more unsure behavior towards Spike- romantically/sexually that is.

that she particularly even liked slaying, let alone loved it.

From S1 onward Giles comments on how Buffy takes too long with slaying, with all the drawing out and being unprofessional. Buffy quips when she kills things because she's having fun. 'It should be plunge and move on, plunge and move on,'
This becomes obvious in 'Bad Girls' when Faith calls her on it and then really obvious in S5 after the enjoining spell.
Buffy doesn't like the burden of being the slayer, but she does, on some level, very much enjoy the catharsis that comes with kicking somethings ass. There are numerous episodes that show it; 'Ted' for one, 'The Prom' for another.

I took it as she liked the power and being in control more than the actually slaying. That is why I said Spike is her shadowself.

She says she doesn't like it but she's never happy when Kendra or Faith were about to share the burden. Quite the opposite in fact

Faith being Buffy's shadow self is pretty much canon I thought. It's what she would or might have been with a shitter home life and less support from friends.

Which is why I always felt for Faith. Had the same support network Buffy had reached out to her and Xander hadn't dragged her into to his vendetta against Angel things might have gone better for her.

I always though the point of Kendra (Season 2) and Faith (Season 3) were to show why Buffy was right to want to balance being a slayer and having a normal life.

Kendra and Faith represent both extremes of the slayer scale, one who is so by the book they don't think for themselves beyond the orders they have been given, whilst the other abuses her power with a "want, take, have" mantra. Buffy is the balance between the two, she doesn't blindly follow orders but she respects her duty as slayer (even if she doesn't always enjoy it). In a way, both Kendra and Faith are Buffy's shadow selves, the what could have beens.

That's exactly how I saw it always too.
It's what she would or might have been with a shitter home life and less support from friends.
That makes Faith her opposite, not her shadowself. The shadowself is the aspects of yourself that you keep hidden or try to repress from everyone else. A shitter home life and less support from friends doesn't really qualify.

I'd have to read more Jung on shadow selves to fully answer that but there's a lot of things that have been said both in and out verse (I think Passion of the Nerd mentions the in verse ones when talking about lesbian subtext in Consequences or Graduation Day) that support the idea that Faith is a dark reflection of Buffy which is what I understand as a shadow self.

Why is a Spuffy thread in the Bangel section of the Boards? 😕

So we can critique the freaky couple. :)

Check out the first post - it was an offshoot of another Bangel thread. It just allows us to discuss the couple from our POV without getting into shipping arguments and was actually started to discuss the merits/interesting parts of Spuffy.

On a more serious note, I think the intent was for Bangels to be able to discuss Spuffy which could include some quite negative comments. It's been here for over a year.

If in doubt, always check the OP! 🙂

Add while we're at it, let's remember the topic. Feels like this strayed into Faith/Buffy territory.
