The Start of Something New

No it's not a song from High School Musical that I'm discussing...Today I just felt the need to wake up and put on Once More With Feeling. I went into the living room popped it on and kaboom, my roommate was bringing in coffee.

Now he's never watched an episode of Buffy before, and when he saw the cheezy roll credits (when I say cheezy i mean awesome) for Once More With Feeling he sat down and I told him what I was about to watched. So he snickered to himself and then began watching the show with mild contempt.

By the end of the episode he could not shut up about it. He was literally all over the place happy that he had the desire to start watching it.

My question is starting him off on such a pinnacle episode, was that bad?
 
my opinion is that i dont think it is bad. a lot of people get interested in the show based on that episode, and the point is, it got him really into it. now he can explore all of the other interesting and cool aspects of the buffyverse. plus, when he watches it again later, he'll probably understand a lot he didnt get before, so it will be like watching it for the first time again 😀.
 
I don't think it's a terrible episode to start with, I mean, it was probably the third episode I saw - the first two being 'The Puppet Show' and 'Nightmares' - and I was really confused, mostly by who Anya, Tara and Dawn were, but it was the episode that really really got me into the show.
 
I don't know, I'd actually try and refrain from using episodes like this as ones to get people 'hooked'.

Way I see it, there aren't many that equal or better it(not that the rest are bad).

Personally, I'd go for one of two episodes.

The Gift - that one has all the 'what happened to get them there' plus the 'I have to see the next episode to find out how they continue' or Primeval - because no matter what you think of season 4, that ending is full of action and the average person will watch the effects and either go 'wow' or this show is not for me.
 
"Once More With Feeling" was the first episode of Buffy that I ever saw, I had seen the movie, and enjoyed it, but it was just a one night stand. The REAL Buffy is an affair that's still going on.
 
I start people off with the Gift also, or Prophecy Girl.. Buffy coming back from the dead interests them. Although Angel with his shirt off got me hooked 😉
 
OMWF is my secret weapon for luring my non suspecting friends into Buffy fandom and make them my Buffy slaves since I posses the entire dvd collection *evil laughter ensues*
 
Honestly I don't think it's bad that you started him off on OMWF. It's a great episode and it really hooks people because you have all this storyline. I made my boyfriend watch it and he is now hooked on buffy again. (he watched a few episodes before but never really got into it). So no I don't think it was wrong of you.
 
No matter what episode you start someone off on with Buffy could ever be bad. If they didn't like it from the epi you put on then that sucks and you have to make them sit thru another. Since this worked out for you, no problemo. It's a great episode.
