Really? I think adultery is utterly selfish and in reality, completely unnecessary. It devastates marriages and tears families apart.
If you don't want to be with someone, then don't be with them. There is absolutely no need for adultery/cheating at all. If you can even think about being with someone else when you are in a relationship then you should NOT be with that person.
So you wouldn't mind being cheated on?! I personally would be torn apart if it was to happen to me.
I'm no friend of marriage/monogamy, at all, and that's a point where I most strongly disagree with Biblical morality. I do have to agree, though, that the concept of cheating on your partner is a very bad one IMO... but not for the "unfaithfulness" part, but for the
dishonesty. I share Cangel's & Aussie's views about the "chaining = bad" part, but my ethical stance strictly demands that
if you want to go non-monogamous, you damn better be honest about it right from the start, and
do not agree to go monogamous with your partner in the first place! I have hardly any problem at all with a partner of mine going down sexy lane with other people (as long as I don't have to watch it...
😛 ), and I'd
never agree to giving up my right to make love with whomever I want to... but lies and "breaches of contract" is another thing entirely.
That could very easily bring me to end a relationship, and, if bad enough,
break off all contact to someone. (Just ask my ex. After I found out what a unscrupulous and compulsive liar she was, I was glad to have her get out of my life completely as quickly as possible. :fuming: )
That's one piece in the TC where, to bring them closer to my own set of ethics, they'd have to be changed from "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" to "thou shalt not lie"; and the anti-adultery commandment would be "thou shalt not reneg on a contract you agreed to enter". (I doubt YHWH would be open to my suggestions, though, or anyone else's, for that matter.
😉 )
IM - I get what you're saying about the difference between morality and ethics but I think I see them as differing in scale. I think morality is more about you as an individual and your own moral compass, and ethics as being a much wider social, global set of morals (for want of a better word 😀)
A definition I (obviously, see above) do not share, but I have no problem living with it... as there's not only a vast number of possible moralities/ethical systems, but an even greater number of possible definitions of words.
