The things we do for love

LOL, what? Angelus didn't adept to having a soul. He was imprisioned by it. It didn't change him in the slightest as we are shown every single time the soul is gone. The only thing that changed was the soul. That's the mythology of the whole damn verse. Vampires can't change because they lack the the tool to do so (soul). If vampires could just change then Buffy is a mass murderer. And so is every slayer before her.

Not really - there's no other way of explaining Angel locking the doors on a room full of attorneys and two hungry vampires. That's not the soul acting. Hooking up with Darla was not the soul acting. He told Cordy that the demon is always there in season one.

Cordy: “ They were just dreams, Angel. They weren’t even your dreams. They didn’t mean anything.”
Angel: “But I enjoyed it.”
Cordy: “It’d probably be okay if you never mentioned that part ever again.”
Angel: “It’s still in me, Cordelia.”
Cordy: “Sure it’s in you. We all have *something*. But it’s not the only thing that’s in you.”

Angelus is still able to get around the soul, and even override the soul sometimes. The demon has adapted to having the soul and works within those limitations. Or else Angel is a psychotic mass murderer even without the demon exerting any influence.

No, adapting means making the best out of your circumstances. And Spike was forced to adept because of the chip. He didn't chose to get the chip. He endured the torture because he knew Buffy would come for the human she cared about that was there with him. There was no way he was going to leave with Dru. She had left him before already when he could still kill. She would just do that again now that he can't.

Which human was with Glory? And why on earth would he even expect rescue from Buffy? For that matter, why did he keep his word and take care of Dawn? Buffy was dead and rotting so he knew he wouldn't get anything from it.

I'm not even going to try to rationalize S7 Buffy who was just crazy bananapants. Because the writers gave me nothing to work with to explain her behavior. The guilt tripping is easy to explain. He said he got the soul for HER. He was also allowed to blame S6 entirely on HER. Both of those things are enough to make Buffy feel extremely guilty. And then he piled the pressure on when he said it falls on her to kill him should he go bad despite the soul.

Of course we could come up with the excuse that the whole thing is a tv show, and blame it on the scripts, the actors, the budget. But let's not.

I suspect anything Spike said to Buffy would be regarded as guilt trips and blame here, but what the heck. He did get the soul for her - to be what he though she wanted - it's called love (even though he had no idea what he was getting into). Once he heard about the trigger, he did want her to stake him, even tired to make her angry enough to do it.

A guilt trip similar to this:

Angel: (raises his voice) Because I wanted to! Because I want you so badly! I want to take comfort in you, and I know it'll cost me my soul, and a part of me doesn't care.

He sobs. Buffy is at a loss for words.

Angel: Look, I'm weak. I've never been anything else. It's not the demon in me that needs killing, Buffy. It's the man.

****

Angel: Am I a thing worth saving, huh? (shakes her) Am I a righteous man? (shakes her) The world wants me gone!

Buffy: (tearfully) What about me? I love you so much... And I tried to make you go away... I killed you and it didn't help
.

If Angel wanted to be dead he could have run off - if he didn't want Buffy to watch him burn up, he could have said he was going back to shelter and gone out later in the day.

If you are refering to the aftermath of 'Lover's Walk' he clearly did stay away after she said she didn't want to see him anymore. And we learn that in the beginning of Amends.

No - the next episode is an AU - and then there's Amends where he shows up in her bedroom.

Once in her room she hears her door slam behind her. She spins around to find Angel there. He looks very tired and somewhat disoriented.

Buffy: Angel.

Angel: Huh... Buffy.

Buffy: What is it?

He looks around apprehensively and clears his throat.

Angel: I gotta... I... look, I, uh, I had to see you, um...

He sees her bed, and it confuses him.

Angel: I don't know, I... You shouldn't be...

Buffy: Just tell me what's going on.

Angel: You have to stay away from me.

Yes, he was under the influence of the First - for that day, and not for months like Spike was. He still should have left after Amends, after Buffy said she wasn't going to see him any more, but he didn't. He should not have even been in Sunnydale to lay this major guilt trip n Buffy. He shouldn't have gone to her bedroom, and brought her back into the relationship she was trying to get out of.

I'm not saying Angel bad and Spike good, but I am also not agreeing that Spike is bad and Angel is good. It's a lot more complex than that. Angel had his own ulterior motives, as did Spike, and even Buffy.

Complexity is the key word.
This is a really interesting thread, I've enjoyed reading it. One thing I was curious about though.

A guilt trip similar to this:

How do you think this is a guilt trip? What is Angel guilt tripping Buffy into here? Such as in Spike's case, people in this thread have argued that Spike is guilt tripping Buffy into forgiving him and loving him back because of how she used him. But Angel wants to end his life, and is convincing her that he should, not to get back into a relationship with him. But this is the only viewpoint I see, so I'm really curious to know yours.

If Angel wanted to be dead he could have run off - if he didn't want Buffy to watch him burn up, he could have said he was going back to shelter and gone out later in the day.

Of course this is rational thinking looking back on the situation 😛. But Angel wasn't really in a rational state of mind to reason that he could do this. Driven crazy by the First and his own suicidal thoughts, I believe that Angel believed he *had* to end his life right there and then, because any moment he might snap and hurt Buffy or other people.

Does he want to end his life? Or does he want her to stop him? That's not uncommon with people who are suicidal, and Angel survived a century of dealing with this guilt. He goes to her bedroom to tell her to stay away - huh? If Angel really wanted to die he would be dead before that. What he wanted was to place himself in Buffy's hands and let her judge what he was, and what he should do.

Angel: Am I a thing worth saving, huh? (shakes her) Am I a righteous man? (shakes her)

He really wants answers, and he wants them from her. I don't think the guilt trip is intended, but he wants her to save him. That's what I see in Spike, as well. He's not looking for forgiveness when he returns with his soul - he never asks for forgiveness because what he did was unforgivable. He's looking for Buffy to decide his future, to utilize whatever he brings to the mix.

The use of different yardsticks bothers me because whitewashed Angel is so boring. He's not Fabio on the cover of a romance novel - he is so much more than that. His relationship with Buffy redefined him - but he was just as bad as Spike in some ways and worse in a few others. These two are my guys, so any metric that concludes one is a villain and one a hero just reeks of old feuds and arguments.

Well, yeah. I completely agree. But Spike was also heavily under the influence of the First, and he's being called selfish and manipulative. Again it's a matter of deciding one vamp is a horrible villain who doesn't care if he destroys Buffy, and the other is a noble hero stoically carrying a great weight. No. Both learn a lot, and both have a lot to learn - they are both redefined by Buffy - they both have intense personal journeys.

I prefer to look beyond the old arguments that just circle around without any thought. Spike is this way because this is Spike - Angel is this way be cause this is Angel. Some people seem so scared to just look and see that they both have faults, and important things to learn, and in some ways they do mirror each other. Saying something nice about one vamp doesn't mean you are dissing the other.

The fact that Spike returned to Sunnydale is surely enough. It's the one place that Spike knows that Buffy would be. He travelled from Africa to get there so why wouldn't it be for Buffy?

it's not enough though if we don't se him going after Buffy. And Sunnydale was also the one place Spike had last been, the one place where he felt 'at home', where he knew somebody (Clem for example). It's understandable that in his confused, freshly souled state he would go there.
Or he could have been influenced by the First (like Jonathan and Andrew) to return to Sunnydale, which would make even more sense

No, because he went crazy because of the First.

This is pure speculation. We don't know how long Spike had been in that basement and when exactly the First started playing with him, but you are basically saying that Spike was in his right mind while travelling from Africa, that he made this sly plot to go to Sunnydale, hide in the basement of the old school (and I will say later why this alone has no sense) and then he hasn't the time to go to Buffy because the moment he puts his foot in the basement in the space of a second the First makes him go crazy? 😵

But when he sees her again he snaps of out it to go visit her.

but he didn't snap out of it until much later, when Wood and Giles plotted to kill him and he was free from the First's trigger

And lets not pretend that hiding in the school was some sort of accident. Spike could've slunk off to a crypt or abandoned warehouse but no, he choses the new high school to hide in.

you call it pretending, I call it using my brain to think. Buffy is a vampire slayer, crypts are her natural playground and if Spike wanted to casually bump into Buffy that would have been the most logical choice. Surely not the basement of the new high school, that btw had been since then an abandoned building and where Buffy had no reason to be or to go. Or you are saying that Spike somehow already knew that the school was reopening and that the new principal was going to offer Buffy a job?

Sure, he wants to be back with Buffy and the best way to do that is to offer to help her. Nothing more to it.

See, it's the fact that he never makes a move in that direction that tells me that you are wrong (it can be true about Angel, though). As I said "He never asks anything in return and never tries to restore their physical relationship". He does absolutely nothing to try to go back with Buffy, not even when Buffy flirts with him, therefore there is no evidence that this is his motivation to help and imo this lack of evidence is evidence that his motivation to help it's very simply what's shown: the desire to help. Which btw is furtherly proved by his actions at the end of s7, all through ats s5 and all through the comics. There is a lot of evidence that Spike does good because he is good and selfless. Which doesn't mean that he is always selfless, he can be selfish sometimes but what seems obvious to me is that Spike's choice to be good and do the right things has nothing to do with Buffy and his love for her. He does it because in his soul he is a good man

I think Spike knew that Buffy wouldn't stake him, and even if she tried he could always fall back on the 'I've got a soul now' thing, but it came up a different way.

He still took a risk, not only with Buffy but also and mostly with the others, especially Xander who had already tried to kill him.

I never said physical relationship, but he wanted things from her- forgiveness, a reckoning, credit for what he did? 'You used me!/I got a soul for you!/I love you!'- seems to me that Spike wants lots of things from Buffy, and he gets them.

You said just a few lines above that Spike wanted to be back with Buffy. I read it as restoring their relationship, which was physical, so it looks like you are contradicting yourself?
But yeah I agree, Spike wants Buffy's forgiveness, and that's normal because he feels the guilt, but he never asks for it. The wanting the credit is just something you see, but I don't.

He 'arrives' in the nick of time in S8- he does exactly what he said he'd do in Angel S5

Sorry, what are you talking about?

- turn up when Buffy really needed him with some vital info (obviously her screwing Twilight!Angel was a bit of a shock to him and took the shine of their reunion).

we are debating about Spike and Angel selfishness, and you bring up Angel basically raping Buffy while killing hundreds of people with the sole purpose of creating a heaven for the two of them? this is what I call a kamikaze move 😛

So he arrives in his ship with some vital plot stuff he's figured out all those weeks before and starts flirting with Buffy from the off.
Then he pretty much stalks her for months in S9 and then 'returns' to her in S10 proclaimed that he's over her and yet isn't. He won't leave her alone.

uh this is so very different from the comics I've read that I have to ask you to give me something to support what you're saying, because what I remember is Buffy day dreaming of having sex with Spike, Buffy flirting with Spike and then being mean with him because he didn't pick her hints, Buffy asking him if he still loves her, Buffy saying that she had thought of raising her child with him. On the other hand what Spike did was encourage Dowling to have a relationship with her, help Dawn, ask Willow to keep silent about his losing his soul and being perfectly good even without it and then asking to be souled again, be there for Buffy AND the scoobies for just the good reasons. Did he love her? Yes, but he never pushed her to restore their relationship so in my book this makes him even more selfless because surely it's hard to be near the one you love knowing you can't have her imo

I see Angel as desperately trying to fill a hole inside himself, but unable to do so. But I don't see any indication that he even cared about humans in general, or bonded with any human. Even Judy, who he tried to help, who he knew was under the influence of a demon, he left to be devoured by that demon.

I never saw that he cared as well. For a 100 years he goes on showing no guilt, no remorse, no care. And 100 years are a lifetime or two for human standards

I still don't see where souled Spike is more selfish than souled Angel.

because he isn't. As I already said all motivation are in a way selfish but love is without doubt the less selfish of all. Well, it is to me at least 🙂

I don't think Angel changing when he met Buffy was selfish, because it didn't have anything to do with wanting to be with her or impress her--more he was inspired by her, and realized that he could be a hero too. I think he felt empathy with her isolation as a Slayer, and wished to help and protect her. He wasn't trying to tap that yet 😉.
Whereas Spike's reason for getting a soul was entirely about Buffy--he wanted to get back with her and be forgiven, he didn't care about being a hero or a good person.

I was going to say (not to you specifically) that this comparison is pretty unfair because we are talking of moments where Spike was unsouled while Angel had his soul (and had had it for a hundred years), but I see that you point this out later and that's good
Anyway souled or not, I still don't understand why love is considered a selfish motivation to do something good (and I think that's the point of the thread, am I right, @bespangeled?). Also, you assume that Angel wasn't selfish because he didn't change for love but for other reasons, such as wanting to be a hero. But isn't this an even more selfish motivation than love? I mean doing good not for the sake of doing good or because you are good, but just to be called a 'hero' seems a VERY selfish and shallow motivation to me

He wasn't trying to tap that yet 😉.

oh was definitely trying to tap that 😀

I don't think that Spike or Angel behaved selfishly while they had a soul.

Well, if we want to broaden the thread and cover both souled vampires' actions from the start till now I'll have to disagree. There are several instances where Angel has made morally questionable decisions for selfish reasons, turning Lawson, taking the deal with W&H, trying to kill Wesley, making Lorne kill Lindsay, the Twilight mess... Uh actually I would define most of this actions as being plainly evil but surely evil is also selfish?

but in the next (non-au) episode he's begging her to let him die - laying it all on her to save him instead of leaving and dying. The one after that, he is giving her a book of romantic poetry, and then they're sparring 3 episodes later. Sparring in the sense that it almost gets groiny. He stays to help Buffy, and he's a lot more physically intimate than is safe, even though he knows the cost. What he did to her friends should have gotten him on a bus to LA long before they broke up in the sewer. He loves her, and he can't give her up even though he knows it's the best thing for her. I think that's a big part of his guilt in Amends. But that isn't unselfish love.

I couldn't agree more. Angel has been pushing to have a sexual relationship with Buffy from the start and at this point it's not only about their differences and doing what's best for her, it's about the danger of his loosing his soul. If he wasn't selfish Angel should have never started their romance in the first place, but when he comes back in s3 his staying around and his trying to go back with Buffy is beyond selfish. It's dangerous and wrong

Love isn't a selfish reason to do something--if you're doing it out of love for that person, and you're trying to make them happy. I believe Spike was trying to get a soul for himself. To prove to Buffy that he loved her, so he could have her back. Not to make her feel better in any way. That's the distinction, it was really for love of himself haha.
And with Angel, I don't mean he wanted the glory of being a hero, but that he truly wanted to help people, and only realized he could when he saw how strong Buffy was.
Ultimately, in these specific instances, Spike was being selfish (wanting to make himself feel better) and Angel was not (wanting to make others feel better). Just my opinion.

it's not enough though if we don't se him going after Buffy. And Sunnydale was also the one place Spike had last been, the one place where he felt 'at home'

And incidentally it is the one place he knows Buffy will be. Spike could've gone anywhere else in the world- someplace he'd been before in those past 120+ years- but he went where the slayer was, simple as that. It was a choice that he made when he was in his right mind.
He even tells Buffy 'I did this for you', so his motivation for coming back to Sunnydale is clear.

No, not speculation. We know Spike was in his right mind enough to get from Africa back to Sunnydale without getting fried- that takes some effort and thought, so we know he wasn't crazy at that point.
His craziness hapeened when he was in the basement- since this is what Spike tells Buffy in the second episode

Saying that the First was controlling him the whole time from the other side of the world? That's a better example of pure speculation.

but he didn't snap out of it until much later

Nope, he's all better from 'Beneath You' onwards- or at least can be with effort or help. The trigger and Spike's reaction to it is a completely separate issue that I have problems with.

See, it's the fact that he never makes a move in that direction that tells me that you are wrong (it can be true about Angel, though). As I said "He never asks anything in return and never tries to restore their physical relationship"

No, not true about Angel because Angel ultimately left her in S3 and made an effort to move on, something Spike has never done.

Spike tells her 'I got this soul for you' (several times) 'I love you', you don't say those things to somebody you don't want something more from.
It's why his 'You're the one' speech rings entirely hollow for me, because its nonsense.

You said just a few lines above that Spike wanted to be back with Buffy. I read it as restoring their relationship, which was physical, so it looks like you are contradicting yourself?

Nope, I always just said that he wants things from her, he doesn't just want to help. I've always said that.
Therefore Spike is not selfless in S7, just a bit spineless. At least until that last scene in the Hellmouth. The 'ILY/NYD' is Spike finally making a decision for himself, not for Buffy.

Sorry, what are you talking about?

Spike's chat with Harmony in Angel S5, how he could'bt just 'show up' back in Buffy's life, he had to make an entrance. Then in S8 he gets the opportunity to sweep in, expose Angel as the bad guy, and get the girl.
Only it didn't turn outt hat way initially.

we are debating about Spike and Angel selfishness, and you bring up Angel basically raping

Sorry, only one vampire tried to rape Buffy, that was Spike, not Angel. 😛
Buffy made a choice to boink Twilight!Angel, had fantastic sex with him, then told him she loved him, etc and then they went off to save the world their boinking had put in danger.

uh this is so very different from the comics I've read

Clearly.
I see no real evidence that Spike is inherently heroic- he does some good things sure. I do see is that Spike likes hanging around Buffy and her friends and she likes heroic people, so Spike will do that.
Unlike all the other Scoobies, Spike with a soul has never forged his own path for an extented period of time. His motivations beyond Buffy are kind of nebulous, always has been. I guess because he wears his soul and his past deeds so lightly, its easy to doubt him imo.

He even tells Buffy 'I did this for you', so his motivation for coming back to Sunnydale is clear.

To make reparations - which is what he spends the entire season doing. He couldn't do that without returning.

The same First that destroyed the Council in England was more than capable of affecting Spike even in Africa. Spike told Buffy he had been having blackouts from the time he got his soul - not the time he arrived in Sunnydale. And people who are insane aren't stupid or incapable. 🙄

Nope, he's all better from 'Beneath You' onwards- or at least can be with effort or help. The trigger and Spike's reaction to it is a completely separate issue that I have problems with.

Actually he's still pretty crazy until 'Him'. Up until he leaves the basement he's still talking to people who aren't there

Spike tells her 'I got this soul for you' (several times) 'I love you', you don't say those things to somebody you don't want something more from.

Wow - I say I love you all the time without expecting to be rewarded. Because I love the person I am talking to. If I get or make something special to make them happy, I even tell them I did it for them. If I know they want me to do something, and it's important, well I do it if I can. It's about love in my world. I guess in your word it's always all about emotional blackmail? 🙁

It's why his 'You're the one' speech rings entirely hollow for me, because its nonsense.

No - she really is the one.😉

Unlike all the other Scoobies, Spike with a soul has never forged his own path for an extented period of time. His motivations beyond Buffy are kind of nebulous, always has been. I guess because he wears his soul and his past deeds so lightly, its easy to doubt him imo.

Spike had a soul for a few months - and he was insane for about half the time. Not much to go on there. Then again, he never committed mass murder because a dog told him to. In fact, he's way behind Angel in the souled massacre department!

Wow - I say I love you all the time without expecting to be rewarded. Because I love the person I am talking to. If I get or make something special to make them happy, I even tell them I did it for them. If I know they want me to do something, and it's important, well I do it if I can. Y'see this, this is why I mostly stopped responding to your posts, your need to try and get personal and f***ing judgmental at the drop of a hat. 😡😡

Spike tried to rape Buffy, that should've been a factor in his constant declarations of love to her- given that he went and got a soul for hewr excetera and demanding forgiveness from her. He shouldn't have darkened her door for a good long while. But no, Spike's 'redemption' is always done at the expense of others and their feelings, whether that's Buffy,. Wood or Angel- Spike is the victim and they are the ones who abuse and cannot understand his pain. Utterly loathsome writing imo.

So yeah, the way Spike acts, what he says, in this particular case there is some emotional blackmail going on on his part. In. My. Opinion.

Y'see this, this is why I mostly stopped responding to your posts, your need to try and get personal and f***ing judgmental at the drop of a hat. 😡😡

This is a lot more personal and judgemental than anything I said.
You don't like the writing in season 7 - I see it differently. You see emotional blackmail - I don't. That's what the board is for - responding to each others opinions.

Let's keep the personal insults out of it, if you can't respond to each other in a friendly manner then ignore each other.

This is a lot more personal and judgemental than anything I said.

Quite frankly, no, its not.
You have made a habit of doing this many times before- and not just to me- making comments about people's personal judgements again and again and I'm sick of it.
Some of your posts have been utterly toxic recently. Get a grip.

That's what the board is for - responding to each others opinions.

You're clearly here just looking to pick fights instead of respecting somebody elses opionion.
I'm over that crap. You should attempt to do the same.
