I hope I'm not commiting a crime by asking this. You will understand why in a second.

The name of the show: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is probably one of the reasons people never took this show seriously (Emmys, anyone?). It's why people look at you like they're saying: "you really watch that stupid show with that stupid name, with that stupid blonde?"
And I hear that the original title of the show used to be "Slayer". Might have been better to take seriously.

So I'm asking 2 questions.
Would you prefer the show in its official title to be the official title ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer")? And if not, what would you name it?

I'm saying it might be a crime because this show is already holy, with all its dimentions and aspects, and the name is part of it.
 
Slayer sounds good but it gives me a totally different image of the show. Buffy the vampire slayer is not a documentry it has a lot of funny moments in it so i think a serious title wouldn't work for it.
I mean it has done much better than Joss expected and that was with the title of Buffy the vampire slayer, for all we know another title may have made it have worse ratings....
 
I've always liked it. Lots of shows have very indescriptive titles like "Grey's Anatomy", "Roswell" or "Kyle XY", whereas with a title like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", "Xena Warrior Princess" or even "Emergency Room", you know exactly what it's about - in a nutshell, of course.

Maybe I'm pretty unimpressed by silly titles to begin with because shows usually get very stupid subtitles over here. Buffy is "Buffy - Im Bann der Dämonen" which VERY roughly translates to "Buffy - Banished by demons".

It's even worse in French

===> Buffy contre les vampires (Buffy against vampires).
The title in french is a bit lame so people are always like "Buffy against vampires? That sounds lame. What kind of name is Buffy anyway? And it talks about a girl who is against vampires? Can I lol or what?"
Also, in French, it's "tueuse de vampire", which is closest to "vampire killer", which doesn't sound as good as "vampire slayer" in my opinion!
And in French, we don't have that difference in meaning between slayer and killer, so when Buffy says "I'm a slayer, not a killer", in French it would be more like "I'm a killer, not a murderer".

I must admit I really don't like the show in French, even if they did the best they could to translate everything.

In English, Buffy the vampire slayer seems better!
Slayer is good too but it sounds a bit more brutal :biggrin3:


Anyway, I understand what you mean with the title that is not serious enough for some people! It's like "Xena warrior princess" as I-don't-remember-who said!

I think, and it's very sad actually, that some people don't take those titles seriously because the title says everything: it's about strong women who can fight, and are actually the main character who save everybody...Some people tend to think

"A girl who fights evil? That must be a girly show for girls only". I don't even think they intend to be mysogenistic, it's just that they are so used to see male heroes that the idea of a girl fighting is ridiculous.

There was Wonderwoman before Xena and Buffy but I wasn't even born so I don't remember at all if the serie had the same reputation problem!
 
I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But like Chocoslayer said, it sounds weird in different languages.

For example, in spanish its Buffy, la casavampiros, which literally translates to Buffy the vampire hunter...it doesn't give me the same feeling ya'know?

Anyways...I do sometimes think that had the shows title been different it may have won emmys. I mean you ask any person who doesn't like the show and they'll tell you that Buffy is a stupid name.

I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If people don't like it, they can suck it.
 
The title of the show is fine for me, and I wouldn't change it. If people are gonna have prejudices about the show without watching it, then let them. You don't know what's in the box until you open it. Don't judge the book by it's covers, they say, right? ^^

I think the title is perfect and honest. You know you are going to see a girl slaying vampires then when you watch it you find out that there is more to it. And slaying is harder than you think.

I want the same name, because Buffy: The Vampire Slayer was chosen specifically by Joss Whedon to demonstrate the irony and role reversal within the show. He wanted a silly name like Buffy juxtaposed against a very serious title like The Vampire Slayer. It embodies exactly what the show is; a kooky, ironic, witty take on vampires. As far as I'm concerned, if people don't "get it," then maybe they're just not smart enough to do so. Either that, or they don't care to take the time to really understand it.

Ya I like the shows name. But if I had to try and choose another one, Supernatural or True Blood (even though those names are already taken) wouldve worked. Or The Vampire Slayer, or Chosen all couldve worked as well.

Exactly, it was Joss' whole point! Although I do agree with the OP as to why it didn't get any/many Emmy nods unfortunately (& probably why it took me awhile to find & love it, TBH). Then again, I'm not sure everone "gets" Joss. It's interesting, though, that besides Dr. Horrible, BtS is his most tongue-in-cheek title (Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse, Angel- just not the same thing, KWIM?).

True, I think some people just don't understand Whedon shows. I have a friend who's watched both Buffy and Firefly, and she really wasn't impressed with either one. This astounds me, but everybody's different.
 
I don't know. The goofy name goes with the goofy show. 'Slayer' sounds too serious.

But yeah, a lot of potential fans might be scared away.
 
Buffy is a show that doesn't really take itself seriously, so I would have to say the title fits very well. I wouldn't change it for anything.
 
I love Buffy the vampire slayer some people say it is kinda cheesy but I tell them you haven't seen the show. I just like the name it stands out to me, Slayer IMO would have been a little bland. Plus I have always liked the name Buffy.

lol, yes Slayer are still around. I saw them live just a few days ago.

As for the title of the show I love it. It's a straight forward title, pure brilliance. I can see why people would shy away from it because of it but that's just their loss 😀

Hey, did you see Slayer at Sonisphere last Saturday? I did :)
"Slayer" would have been awful, its too short, doesn't get across the message of the programme. The show's about Buffy's journey, she's a vampire slayer, hence why Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a perfect fit.
