Deciding who to vote for in an election is a tricky business at best. You have to live with whoever you vote into public office for at least a number of years. Even so, when it came time to find a new mayor for one American town the residents all agreed that the most favourable candidate was, yes, a badly-behaved goat.
In the 1980s, a mayoral race began in the village of Lajitas in Texas. Formerly a prosperous mining town, Lajitas had become almost deserted since the end of World War 2. Initially, the two likely candidates were a man from Houston and a goat named Clay Henry, but public opinion quickly swayed towards the four-legged favourite and after a short but bitter struggle, Henry was voted in as Mayor of Lajitas.
Mayor Henry quickly realised the perks of office and developed quite a drinking problem. All his constituents need do was put a beer bottle between his lips and he could chug the whole thing. This attitude made him so popular that the position of Mayor became hereditary to his family and he was eventually succeeded by his son Clay Henry II, who in turn was murdered by his son, the current mayor Clay Henry III.
The original Clay Henry was reportedly able to put away 35-40 bottles of beer a day, his favourite being Lone Star. Although his descendants haven’t yet developed such a remarkable tolerance they still put the stuff away.
Unfortunately, there are trouble-makers in every community and one day a certain fellow named Jim Bob Hargrove took it upon himself to castrate the mayor after seeing him drinking on a Sunday. Despite Hargrove being caught in the act and charged with animal cruelty, the damage was done and the noble line of Henry will end with Clay Henry III.
He’s still there today and people come from far and wide to witness the patricidal alcoholic goat Mayor of Lajitas.
