What did you guys think of Angel - the trial (no spoilers please 🙂)

I thought I post this in here, (since a lot of you know I'm watching Angel for the first time and hopefully you won't spoil anything for me. 🙂) Hope it's allowed 🙂

I'm sorry if anybody in here hasn't watched Angel and I'm spoiling something now. I hope not, I don't know how to do that spoil highlight thingy.

Anyway:

I just watched the episode the trial and was wondering what you all thought about it? I thought it was wierd Angel would die for Darla when he himself had said he never loved her. It was a touching episode and, hm, I guess, nice (?) of him, but I found it a bit strange. What did you guys think?

I haven't watched any episodes after the trial so I'm just going on what I know from the previous episodes.

One of my favorite Angel episodes ever. It's even in top 3 with You're Welcome and Are You Now, or Have You Ever Been.

I think he did what he did because Darla was in the same situation he was. She's just gotten her soul and she struggled to live with it. So I guess Angel wanted to help her to live and do good things to the world. If I remember correctly, Darla said things like, if Angel lives and let her die, it's better than vise versa. But Angel declined it. I guess he just did what heroes would do. 😉

Plus, I think Angel cares about her. They spent lifetime together for like 100 years. They're like old friends, IMO.

I really enjoyed this episode and it was one that I loved. I was starting to like the idea of Darla being a human and excepting it. Then the scene that is still one of my all time favorites out of both series Drusilla comes in that moment was pure perfection.

It was sad yet good because their reunion were very good episodes.

Hm. Then based on how many people here like it, I'm almost reluctant to say I really don't like this episode at all. It bugs me that they have Lorne send Angel out on false missions over and over again, and it bugs me that the whole episode (save the ending) is just a write-off: "Oh well, that didn't work... 40 minutes gone from the season, though" (until it's retconned into extreme significance in "Inside Out"). Jeeves as a character is supremely annoying, and there are lame lines (and set destruction) from both Angel and Darla here.

Ok, perhaps you could say that on a bare plot level, they're back to where they started, but on a dramatic level a whole lot comes out of this episode. We see just how far Angel will go to save Darla, we see her changing, worrying about Angel, feeling things like gratitude and hope. We learn just how deep Lindsey's hatred and selfishness runs, and see his reaction to having Darla stolen from him, and it has one of the best twists at the end of an episode out of the whole series!

Also, Lorne's missions were never really supposed to give Angel what he wants. They were always about what he needs, and were a way for him to explore and deal with the things he is struggling with. That's what Lorne sees when someone sings, and that's what he tries to resolve. Lorne isn't there to give people what they want. Well, unless it's a sea-breeze. The mission wasn't false. It didn't end up fulfilling the goal that Angel had set for himself, but by the end of it Darla was accepting of her fate. She wasn't out to become a vampire again. That was the ultimate end of the mission, whether she got life or not.

Guys, I've never been more pissed off at a series in my life. I seriously almost broke my TV during the ending scene, and I almost gave up AtS completely (I still haven't began S3 because of the crappy arc at the end of this season). This is where the show seems to take its fall, I was so interested up until this episode and I really hope that from season three onward it gets better. I know Darla's fall was meant to be some sort of dramatic shocking twist, but I seen it coming (it wasn't a surprise). What it felt like was a cheap wannabe-Jenny-death that we had already seen in Buffy. I know Darla isn't finished yet, I hope her story ends semi-well from here on out. One thing I can honestly say, if I was a fan while it was still airing I probably would have stop watching it at this point. Maybe that was what the writers were hoping for? I dunno, but this episode had potential to be beautiful. I know many fans see it this way, but I don't. I just don't.

This episode really had me on the edge of my seat. The Trial was awesome (and I couldn't help a fan-girl squeal when the Valet told Angel he had to remove his shoes & shirt- um, of course he did!). The fact that Angel couldn't save Darla was heartbreaking. Darla's change of heart was amazing to see- from wanting to be re-sired to accepting her fate because of Angel's attempts to save her. And the end- I remember how incredibly shocked I was the first time I saw it: that feeling of absolute dread as Dru sauntered into the room. It was very well done.

Do you think that if Darla hadn't been turned, Angel would've found some other way to save her?

I really like the Darla arc. The only thing I don't like is that we see much less of Wes-Cordy-Gun. At first it seemed like we were losing the whole Champion/helping the helpless/Shanshu aspect, but to me we find it again in this episode. Yes, Angel & Darla are incredibly connected and he identifies with her so much because of what she's going through, but the main point is that she has a soul, thus making her worth saving. That's my opinion anyway.

Watching this ep for the first time...

1. Angel's obsession is crazy! Love that he wants Darla to have the chance to reform herself and really live.
2. Loved Cordelia and Wesley's little "talk" with Darla at AI.
3. Darla can SING! Love it!
4. I heart green reader demon. Can't remember his name right now. He's just so wise and hilarious.
5. I love the British underground Master of Ceremonies. Also love that he makes Angel get parially nakey. 🙂
6. Throughout these last few episodes, I have enjoyed seeing how the bond between Darla and Angel was forged and how strong it still is. Their connection is so strong, even after all these years of being apart.

8. Wow. The scene after the trial with Angel and Darla is just devastating. And the one in the hotel touching.

Agreed! Love the Angel/Darla connection and my my the ending of this episode just shocked me when I first watched it. I was also like; "nooo, no don't do it Dru!"

Poor Angel... he tried so hard. :S
