There's a problem with The Unit though. We won't see it until next season mid-season. At first that seems odd because it was getting great buzz.

But then you read this -

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) When you're the top-rated network on television, there's still a limit to how many highly rated fan favorites -- like "Judging Amy" -- or critically adored Emmy nominees -- like "Joan of Arcadia" -- you can cancel to make room for new things from your development slate.

With six new scripted shows ready to premiere in the fall of 2005, CBS has held back one drama and one comedy for midseason. That isn't such a bad prospect for "The Unit" and "Everything I Know About Men", given that CBS didn't launch "NUMB3RS" or "Yes, Dear" until midseason this year and both shows have stuck.

Certainly both of CBS' midseason hopefuls come with strong pedigrees.

"The Unit" was developed by David Mamet ("Glengarry Glen Ross") and Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") and boasts an ensemble cast topped by previous series leads Dennis Haysbert ("24"), Scott Foley ("Felicity"), Robert Patrick ("The X-Files") and Regina Taylor ("I'll Fly Away"). The drama focuses on a team of special forces operatives and the families they leave behind whenever they have to travel around the globe on various missions. Amy Acker ("Angel"), Max Martini ("Saving Private Ryan"), Michael Irby and Abby Brammell also star in the 20th Century Fox TV production.

Hmm, I'm actually intrigued by the idea for this show, especially the 'homefront' aspect of it...probably the 'engaged to a Marine' thing has something to do with that 😉 but I just don't know how this is going to shape up (even as a midseason replacement) just because of the shadow of 24. This could be cast in a "CBS trieds to do 24" kind of light, which could either be bad or good. Bad: because critics will ignore it, Good: because you might get a crossover fan base from 24. I think CBS could have a winner here, though, if their "crime" dramas are anything to go by, they're no stranger to action. (Did anyone see the CSI finale? Crazy! Awesome!)
 
This could be interesting. Mamet's actually really good at intrigue, intricate plotting, espionage. Spartan is pretty good. He wrote the screenplay for Ronin too. His characters always have a weird wooden, stagey quality to them. Great dialogue, plotting, yet strange performances from his actors. Wonder how much, if any, influence on writing and direction he'll have.

I think if it has any advantage over 24, it will be that it's global in scope, not just LA. And there's apparently something of a homelife with the spouses, boy/girlfrends. So maybe kinda like Alias was early on. 24's romance aspect has always been the cheesiest part of the show.

Wonder if it'll be anything like the Global Frequency comic?

Also, one of Mamet's brilliant early films, House of Games, has Maggie Walsh in it. She's the lead actually. And Mamet's ex-wife apparently.
 
Not sure on the truth or reliability of this. But aparently CBS has recast Amy's role on 'The Unit' Source
