The Vampire Craze

Don't know if this has been asked before but I was wondering what everyone has to say. Vampires are all over the place today why do you think that is?
There are so many shows Buffy and new ones like The Vampire diaries and True blood that are on high success. Movies like twilight are called phenomenons. What do you think attracts people to the idea's of vampires so much?

I see your point there. I don't think they will ever compare to Buffy or Angel but I think there are some new good ones that have a lot of potential. I do think Twilight started this craze but I want to know why people are so attracted to the idea of a vampire. They love these loves stories with humans and vampires. What is it that makes you love it so much?

I know for me I love the idea of a vampire. For example Spike he was hot but he felt emotion as well. He was loyal. He had a great personality. There are so many things to say about him. The idea that a creature that is not supposed to love that way does makes it so fascinating.

I don't think it's totally because of the Twilight saga that vampires are "in" right now. Vampires have always been one of Hollywood's favorite things to glamourize because of their sexiness. The whole story of the vampire is sexy, mysterious, romantic, and scary. All of these things combined make really great movies/TV if done right. 🙂

I've always been drawn into vampire stories because of the darkness and depression and loneliness. I relate to that. I get ignored a lot for my quietness and liking weird things. The way the older movies told vampire stories it seemed kind of beautiful, and acceptable to be an outcast. Plus they make it seem romantic as well.

I dig the Twilight stuff though. I usually can't stand new twists on old myths but I like the Twilight vampires for some reason. They intrigue me and contrary to what most people say I think they're pretty sweet and cool.

I can relate to that to in a way and I like how you pointed that out. They do make it seem acceptable because they are going through it to.

I like the vampire diaries and how they are. Damon is my favorite he is sexy of course but he has so many layers. I love to see them all come undone.

I love the Vampire Diaries too. <3 And yes, Damon undoing his layers would be quite nice to see. 😉 hehe And he feels like the new Spike... he's evil but tries to do good sometimes. I like it.

Thats exactly how I feel I was like he is a Spike to me and I love it. He is like him but not to like him if you know what I mean.
I like Stefan as well.

One of the reasons I believe people have such a newfound love for vampires is the recent popularity of fantasy and sci-fi. Vampire stories have always been popular, but like other fantasy and sci-fi genres, geek genres, they have had a niche audience. The masses are more accepting now. Okay, Twilight's the main reason for vampires being so popular now, but the demand for quality sci-fi and fantasy is higher than it's ever been, and I think that has some part to play.

But, I like this newfound appreciation of the genre as now authors are doing so many different things with it. Everything from smart vampire stories (Buffy) to lighter fare (Sookie Stackhouse).

I've just finished the first Sookie Stackhouse book and it was ridiculuously entertaining.

I got into vampires before I watched Buffy. They were always intriguing, but it was True Blood that actually set off my vampire obsession. They're sexy, mysterious, always standing on the line between ecstacy and death. I hope the craze never stops!

Vampires are the embodiment of youth. I mean, they're immortal, frozen in time never again having to worry about aging or essentially problems that the average person has to deal with daily. That is the driving factor I've always seen in vampire's popularity, it is what has always captivated me about them.

While buffy is def. my fav vampire show, True blood isn't bad at all. Where as vampire diary's is just 'twilight' in hour long increments (or however long the show is never seen it, never want to).

The sad thing is, it's not like we have GOOD vampire movies Twilight is ruining that.

I've read they are doing a remake of 'interview w/the vampire' which hopefully might be good but a remake isn't really necessary we need NEW GOOD ideas and movies not remakes of past good vamp flicks, or more glittery wooden acting.

It's funny for a Buffyverse obsessive to say this, but vampires don't appeal to me much at all really. A lot of the brooding 'creature of the night' stuff strikes me as silly, and in a bad writer's hands it's probably the worst Hollywood monster out there.

For me, Buffy's about way more than vampires. The writers seem to agree, since vampires become less and less important as villains as the show progresses.

Oooh, I love this. I had read every single response but yours and thought, 'Wow, these people really dig vampires. Like, maybe they like Buffy for the vamps, whereas I like vamps for the Buffy... if you can even say I really like them.'
I agree, Joss Whedon did vampires WELL. But Joss can do anything, really. I'm not one of those crazy Whedonites ;-p but I do know that nothing's ever done for me what Joss does for me (tv-wise).

When I first got on my Buffy kick way back in the day (when it was over 🙁), I went a little 'keyword crazy' on IMDB and searched for anything that I thought might give me my Buffy fix, so I WANTED to be interested in the other vampire stuff... I just... Even the descriptions and previews severely paled in comparison. Heck, it took me almost a year to -MAKE- myself watch Angel (and I royally dug it once I gave it a chance, but again, Joss). When I heard all the similarities people were throwing out about Veronica Mars and Buffy, I was ~fairly~ on board because I didn't need vampires, tho to be honest, what I really wanted WAS another Buffy and the fact that there weren't vampires turned me off initially ('I don't care for vampires but this show doesn't have them so I'm not watching.' I'm a head case, I know) ...but then Joss and Kevin Smith were raving about it, deeming it the best show on television, so I had to give it a try. ...and branching off from that, one other vampire show I've considered watching (because I did fall in love with the train wreck crack that is Veronica Mars) is Moonlight with Jason Dohring. ...but CRAP that looks awful! I keep telling myself I can just say it's a jossover, where Logan got bit by some Buffyverse vamp... but, there's no Joss, so I know it will just disappoint.

The recent success of Twilight is probably the biggest factor in the latest vampire craze. It's easy to read, easy to watch. Edward was written as the perfect dream guy for most girls. Vampires have always been associated with romanticism. Twilight was just put in teen format.

I like vampires, but I was never as into them as one might expect being a Buffy fan (I was always a werewolf kinda gal). The reason I watch Buffy is because there is more to it than just vamps. It's a metaphor for life and growing up.

To be honest, I don't have anything against people who sudendly got interested in vampires. I like True Blood, and I had a chance to watch only few episodes of Vampire Diaries, but I don't like Twilight. I don't mind Stephanie Mayer making vampire different, except that sparkling thing, because when I see a vampire I would like to say "Hot!" or "Scary!!!!", not "Awwww, it sparkles!". I have Tinkerbell for that. I've read first three books before the movie came out, and I thought they were ok, nothing big, but interesting. But she tried to mix horror with fairytale, and you have to be a genious to make that good, and she's not that big of a genious. But to be honest, movies ruined everything Twilight was. First, it ruined Robert as actor, and he said that himself. Kristen Stewart has only one face expresion and she is so STUPID, I've been watching this interview and she used the word LIKE 7 times in the 10 words sentence. Also she is rude and doesn't respect her fans at all. Only good think in that movie is that Taylor guy only because he's hot, and Dakota Fanning in the second part, because she got a chance to act something else and she was good at it. I've heard some bad words about her, like she's bad for that role and that was before when she was casted for it, because she's this innocent little girl. She's 16 now, and I think one day she'll be serious actress and she needs to leave her childhood work in good memory. I don't see what's wrong with her trying new roles, she's growing up, and she doesn't have to act in "kid" movies only because we get to know her like an child actress. I think she only made movie better. Also, I've heard that Stephanie Mayer is writing 5th book, and I'm not happy about that. I respected J.K Rowling when she said there are going to be 7 books of Harry Potter. She could've write another book and earn more millions, but she has a respect for her character. In this way Stephanie only leaves and impression that she's fame hungry.
I don't have anything against new vampire lovers, but I do have something against those crazy Twilight fans who say "That's stupid and not true" when they read something about vampires that Stephanie didn't wrote in book. They're not vampire lovers, they're Twilight fanatics.

I agree. I've never been a super massive fan of the genre either.

But, as a fantasy enthusiast I like to try dabbling in all of its subgenres. I'm not particularly interested in brooding bad boys, but not all vampire fiction is like that. Some novels and televison shows do different things with the genre. This is the stuff I tend to like more. Like the classic novel Dracula. In the novel, Dracula isn't some angsty hunk the lead wants to date; he's a creepy, old man who torments the protagonists.
