The Vampire Diaries - Watching For First Time!

Moving right along here! Just finished S1E13.

Oof. Well, there's a lot going on. I'm not sort of not surprised that Katherine wasn't in the tomb.

It's interesting to see how genuinely upset Damon is over not finding Katherine in the tomb. Though Damon is one of my favorite characters at this point, and I do find him interesting, It's hard to feel sympathy for him. It does suck for him that Katherine has been free all this time, and couldn't care less to call him up. I'm definitely sensing that Damon was infatuated with her, and she didn't feel the same.

Matt's mother creeps me out. There's something off about her.

So, Isobal, Alaric's wife, was killed by Damon, because she was researching vampires...but she is also Elena's mother? Seems like a lot, but okaaay.

Jeremy is finally starting to realize that vampires exist. Better late than never.

It's going to get REAL interesting if they wake up Katherine...I'm still confused about this though. I thought she was killed in a fire? But then why would she be in a tomb? Is she just asleep?

Kath’s in the tomb she’s almost in a deep slumber. She’s in the tomb bc I guess in 1864 she was locked in the tomb as punishment, she was supposed to be killed in the fire. I’m assuming the plans changed 👀👀

Oh my God you guys. I just have to lament. I just accidentally saw a HUGE spoiler. Ugh. I'm going to keep watching of course, but I'm so annoyed.

This can be the problem with the internet. I got a spoiler for The 100 simply from a two word post title. :(

That sucks!! I hate when I get spoiled on something in a show I'm watching.
Moving along with S1...

I get the feeling the mayors son Tyler is gay. We'll see if I'm right.

Damon has more humanity in him than he's letting on, which makes his behavior confusing and contradictory to say the least. He's totally ruthless, and will kill anyone without a second thought, but also seems to experience genuine human emotions, like his love for Stefan, and his loyalty to him, despite attempting to suppress them.

No, no no Jeremy. Please tell me this is a passing phase and he doesn't really want to be a vampire. I really like is character, and I can't see this ending well if he's turned. Hopefully he's over it now that he knows Vicki is dead.

Damon and Elena working together to save Stefan gives me Buffy and Spike vibes, though their chemistry isn't as good. I do wish Damon was funnier - honestly, that any of the three were - but I appreciate his sardonic sense of humor.

I really like Stefan and think he's the most interesting character honestly. He's mysterious, but not in a cheesy way, and he's got a long history I'm interested in learning more about. I also like Alaric.

Elena is def meh for me. I like the actress but the character goes nothing for me. I don't dislike her, but I'm not particularly interested in her either. She's starting to feel like an accessory to Damon and Steven which sadly is often the fate of female characters in these types of series. And I'm sure more than likely they'll start fighting over her too.

As for the other female characters, I think Bonnie's character is interesting, but she doesn't get much screen time. I like Jenna too. But I think you would all agree that at this point the male characters are the most developed and interesting. It reminds me of Supernatural but I sure hope this show doesn't kill off all the women like that show did.

I have a question for fans of this show.

Why is it set in high school? It honestly doesn't serve the plot and is not necessary. The show would work better if they were out of high school. Most of the characters aren't even in high school. The small town setting is perfect but I'm struggling with why it's a "high school series" which it could easily not be.

There are barely any scenes in the school anyway. Half the time they're at the bar or out and about with adults. It would also make sense since Stefan and Damon can't pass as high school students. Thoughts?

Anyways so I got a big spoiler about Damon and Elena so don't worry about discussing that. I find it hard to believe though because at this point she's so crazy about Stefan...but we still got 7 more seasons to go! Anything can happen!

So, Stefan is going off the deep end and Damon is holding things together? Didn't see that coming.
And yeah, I think I've pinpointed the moment that Damon and Elena start falling for each other...
the dance at the Founder's Miss Mystic falls thing. Yep. I can see it now...
I know they don't get together until season 4, but the seeds are being planted now...no one is surprised by this but I'm already team Delena (is that the ship name?)
I do feel bad for Stefan though. He really loves her.

I'm a but confused about why drinking human blood makes Stefan so crazy? Only because he didn't drink it for so long?
How come Damon drinks it and it doesn't make him uncontrollable like that?
Also I think more people know about the vampires than they think. The girl, Amber, who Stefan bit didn't seem surprised he was a vampire.

Ok finished s1! What a ride.

Sorry if my thoughts are all over the place!

Stefan and Elena at the falls where she begs him to not kill himself is similar to the scene with Angel and and Buffy in Amends. Why does the women always have to beg the man to do better?

Interesting about how Damon and Stefan were turned. This explains Damon's animosity towards him. Their relationship is very interesting to me and I'm loving all the backstory which explains what they went though. They clearly love eachother though act like they don't. I'm kind of a sucker for brother drama though. Hence why I love SPN so much.

I am struggling to believe that Damon's feelings for Elena go beyond the fact that she looks like Katherine? I think he appreciates her friendship and her belief he can do better and is worth saving, but that is not enough for him to fall in love with her at this point. I think he's just fascinated with her because she looks like Katherine.

Poor Alaric. His wife, who he thought was dead, comes back as a heartless vampire...

Reminds me of SPN in the sense that there are alot of characters being introduced and women characters being killed...hope this trend doesn't continue.

The look on Stefan's face when Isobel tells Elena that Damon is in love with her is telling, because he knows it's true. Damon, however, is either in denial about being in love with her or doesn't believe he is... He definitely has feelings for Elena, but he also is still mourning the loss of Katherine so. But it's obvious Damon and Elena have bonded, they two do care about eachother, and are friends. They both admit it. But that's not love.

Also hysterical to me that Damon will literally make out or have sex with lierally any woman. He is the definition of easy. Ha.

KATHERINE KISSES DAMON but he thinks it's Elena! What? I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that Katherine could pass as Elena to Damon. How could he not have noticed? I mean they're vampires they have hightended senses right? And they're totally different people! And he knows Katherine really well. This is just poor writing.

Also Damon and Elena kissing at the season 1 finale was NOT on my bingo card. Even if it's not really Elena.

Elena choosing to erase Jeremy's memory was invasive for sure. I can see why he's mad. I do hope they can repair their relationship. Poor guy. It's sad to know he feels so alone and empty. Two girls he loved killed.

My god poor Elena. She finds out vampires exist, finds out she's dating one, who happened to save her life, she's adopted, her mother is a vampire, and her uncle is her father. All in one school year. Girl needs therapy.

And then KATHERINE showing up. Geez I'm feeling lots of feels.

People saying this season is "slow?" What? I certainly wasn't bored.

So Tyler and his father the mayor. What's the deal. They're vampires? I thought Tyler was gay but I guess he was just a vampire. So maybe the gadget invention didn't have an affect on him....damn I hope they don't start introducing other creatures like werewolves bc then it will be too cliche. Also hard for me to keep up lol.

Some of my predictions for the next season are:

Katherine will try to get with Damon now that Stefan rejected her. Damon will go for it because he doesn't believe Elena has feelings for him beyond friendship, so at this point, he figures why not.

Elena will actually kiss Damon.

Damon makes Caroline a vampire to pay her back for treating her like shit when they dated.

Bonnie tries to get Damon killed. This ruins whatever is left of her and Elena's friendship.

Tyler comes out as gay to Matt.

Jenna gets killed. I have no reason other than to believe this other than that she has essentially no story line at this point beyond being Elena's sister.

Caroline's mother the cop gets killed.

Jeremy is turned into a vampire by Damon.

I wonder if I will be right about any of these?thanks for following along guys! Feel free to add your comments. Not too worried about spoilers at this point since I already got some.

Very such enjoying this show! It's a good escape.

Damon is a slut
Season 1 really sucked me into the show. I thought it was a whirlwind! Some parts are really predictable, only because I am a soapie fan, but on the rewatch its much easier to accept it for what it is, and thats a fun little rollarcoaster of a story. I would love to see it for the first time again (go watch The 100 after this and post a thread 😉 )

Stefan admitting he was stalking Elena without her knowing is so on par with vampire romance, lol. Reminds me of Angel and Buffy.
Oh the appeal of love at first sight 😍 I really love Elana and Stefan together. Its so Twitarded, and so for me.

Keep posting! Its fun to read your thoughts 😀

It’s ‘slow’ in a sense that most seasons after s1 are genuinely insane. If you think s1 was entertaining you’re in for a ride!

Oh jeez. What did I get myself into, ha.

I really like Stefan as a character, so I don't think I can ship him with Elena because it's obvious she is going to choose Damon and break his heart.

Stefan for me, Damon for Elena 😹
Ha, yes! Stefan is super hot. I don't usually like blondes, but damn he's a good looking dude.

I just dont get Damon. Like, what is his angle? He acts like a total sociopath, but then does things that make me think he cares, like when he uses his body as a shield to protect Elena. Also, he could have easily lied to Elena and told her he knew Jeremy was wearing the ring when he killed him. Does he honestly think Elena can ever forgive him for killing her brother? How could she? It will be interesting to see how she believably does that.

Random thoughts as I watch S2:

Damon has humanity in him. He cares, and he can and does love. Damon would not have asked Katherine if she loved him if he didn't care. His inability to have sex with her proves this. Damon has proven already he cares more than he lets on. Though he seems to have no reservations with having sex with women he doesn't love, he can't have sex with a woman he loves, unless she loves him back. And this, the desire to be loved, is obviously a human trait.

Of course one could argue that Damon is a sociopath, and simply mimicking human behavior; like how he used himself as a shield to protect Elena after he saw her do the same for Caroline. Hard to say. And that's what makes Damon interesting.

With the exception of Bonnie, it's unfortunate that the black characters are the ones getting exploited and/or killed.

I feel sad for Stefan. I feel like this is the beginning of the end. Elena didn't deny there was something going on between her and Damon when he accused her of it. There's clearly a connection between Damon and Elena, and feelings between them, perhaps that they're trying to excuse under the guise of "friendship." Elena has admitted, after all, that she cares about Damon. And knowing now it ends, I can't help but feel bad for Stefan.

Caroline did the right - and clever thing - by "forcing" Matt to break up with her. She knew it wasn't safe for him if they are together, now that she's a vampire. I will say though that Matt playing dumb when they girl was clearly hitting on him is just not believable.

Interesting parallels here:

Katherine telling Damon she never loved him and it will always be Stefan and Elena telling Damon the same.
Stefan telling Elena it won't get any easier and telling Caroline the same thing.

I'm not crazy at all about there now being werewolves. I really hope this show doesn't end up like SPN with a bunch of different mythical creatures and characters, and me having a hard time keeping up...but I'm thinking it will.

The show is called the VAMPIRE Diaries so I was hoping it will stick mostly to VAMPIRE lore. Not gonna stop watching but sort of annoyed.

I absolutely love Damon which is probably no surprise to anyone here.

Why would Elena be confused when Caroline asked her to not leave her alone? She just become a vampire and has no self control...

I'm loving all the flashbacks that explain the complexity of Damon and Stefan's relationship. And I'm a sucker for period drama, especially Victorian era, anyway. I really hope there will be more of this.

Thanks for following along, friends! Feel free to comment on any and all I've said here!

I don't know if this show will end up with lots of different creatures, but I checked and Legacies is a spinoff and that does.

I'm really not, but I loved it in this show. It was all so pretty! The show has a beautiful aesthetic to watch.

The town history and strict adherence to tradition, whilst allowing progress, was such a great set for a show like this. I really enjoyed all the balls and carnival type days, the community was just as important to the story as the central characters.

Keep posting! Its so fun to see shows through the eyes of new fans.

So, much to my delight, I discovered there are a series of companion books written for the show, and I am able to borrow them from the library! Squee! So, I'm going to go ahead and skip the book for the first season since I have already watched it, but I'm reading along with the companion as I watch the second season, and I think these are going to be very useful! It looks like the books explore each episode in-depth, with information on the history, supernatural mythology and lore of the series and discuss character development as well. Allow me to catch up in the book with where I am in the series. Longer post forthcoming. Thanks for following along friends!

I actually also recently started watching TVD after enjoying Buffy! I am only halfway through season one, but I'm enjoying it. I know from pop culture that Damon is a fan favorite, but though he is fun to watch I quite dislike him so far, so I'm curious to see how his character progresses. So far my favorite is probably Bonnie.

Awesome! Catch up to Season 2 and you can join in on discussion!
Hello friends! I'm making my way through Season 2.. here are some random thoughts.

I guess I should be more intrigued about who Klaus is, but for whatever reason I don't care?

Caroline is growing on me, she is endearing in her own way. I like her and Tyler as friends. I hope they can fix it.

It's cool to see another witch, but it feels more like Lukas was introduced so Bonnie could have a romantic interest. Speaking of, her and Jeremy feels very forced, again, like the writers need a love interest for her, no matter who it is, and Jeremy was the only available guy. They have absolutely no chemistry.

Still a bit confused in the whole doppelganger thing, but that's probably because I'm slow, lol.

I'm curious what they plan to do with Matt's character. He can't just be Elena's and Caroline's ex. Will they make him a werewolf? Will they make him a vampire? Hook him up with Bonnie? It remains to be seen I guess. At this point, he doesn't really have a role.

Damon, Stefan and Jeremy are still my favorite characters. I also think Tyler has the capacity to be a really interesting character and I'm glad to see them developing him more in this season.

Also, what happened to the whole "diaries" part of the The Vampire Diaries? For a series with "diaries" in the title, diaries aren't really playing a role. Sure, Elena had one in season 1, but we don't see her writing in it anymore. Damon doesn't appear to keep one. And Stefan seems to have stopped writing in his as well. There's Mason's journal, where he documents his turning but that could scarecely be called a diary.
