I was trying to explain the series to a friend a while back and I said the following. It only is a part of what I said, but I would appreciate if you could let me know if there is there anything that sounds a bit off...

The series has four major vampires and one semi-important vampire. In order of how they became vampires (some going as far back as the early 1700s) they are...
Darla, Angelus, Druscilla, Spike, and Harmony.
Apart from Harmony, it is crucial to understand how each of the vamps came into being (other than Darla).
Darla made Angelus into a vampire. Liam was the human name of Angelus before his transformation. Angelus was famous for not only his kills, but his way of making people insane. He took a girl destined to be a nun and made her insane by killing her family and mentally torturing her. This girl's name is Druscilla. Druscilla then finds a guy named William and makes him into a vampire that will be known as Spike. Because "Dru" was mentally unstable due to Angelus torture, Spike considers Angelus to be the one that made him a vampire (termed "sire" by the series)

wasn't Darla sired in the early 1600's? i'm not sure, but i think it might be 1604

Ignoring the others, it is crucial to understand how Spike came into being.
The gods looked kindly on earth one day. A brilliant chain of events led Drusilla to a doofus named William and without really understanding why, she turned him into a vampire. He later became Spike, the greatest vampire in all the land. But, Spike had a challenger to his crown. The asshat Angel, or Angelus. They fought many battles over 100 years. It culminated in a fight to the death. So great was Spike's power, that when he bested Angel, he did not kill him. Such was his humility.
