have anyone here read the book or seen the movie.... ? i am reading the book now.. i only have like 20-30 p. left... (i bought the book about a year or so ago, and its just been standing on my book self while i was getting ready to read it.) it's juts so sad... i'm really glad i saw the movie when it came out on video(which is quite sometime ago...) casue now when i read the book, i sorta picture the same colors.

i'm at the part when the lisbone girls all go thru with it...

i think it' amazing how whell Jeffery Eugenides writes... how he lets us walk down memoryn lane with the narreter of the book... how we to sorta get to see the lisbon girls bit by bit(the little we see...) and how he is able to write about it.. in such a well written way, and i wonder how he came to the conclution to write about these people...

does anyone have any thoughts aboyut the story?

I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie a couple of times. I like it a lot, but I keep changing my mind about it.. Sometimes I think it's a really really great movie (and sometimes I'm not so sure).. Well I like it and it's very special..
Can't say anything about the book though since I haven't read it.. Is it better than the movie..?

I've seen the movie many times (infact I think Faith? started a topic about this a while ago) and I absolutely adore it. I have been meaning to pick the book up for a while now but haven't.

Their mom was so psychotic. I truly felt for all the girls. This is one the rare movies where I truly thought voice over worked well.

The scene in the movie where they go through with it is truly sad. Kirsten Dunst's character tells the boys to head in as she is slowly smoking a cigarette. Her voice is calm yet chilling in retrospect. As the guys discover the girls' bodies one by one you're confronted with this awful image of what emotional abuse lead these girls to. They were caged birds who had to kill themselves to be set free. It's truly sad. <<<<okay that was a bit overdramatic but it is really sad.

When you see the movie. I'd be interested to see how they differ. Please post back again about it 🙂

acually i saw the movie when it came out... i'm gonna buy it dvd november though...

the movie is very well made based on the book. they follow the books story and mood pretty well... they haven't altered the story much(they have only shorted it a little bit... but not in bad ways..)

their mom is very phyco, she loses one girl and in an atemt to keep the others she looses them too.... the thing i don't get is why the girls don't leave when she takes them out of school and keeps them in the house premenetly. They are 4 capaple girls, they could leave if they want to, i don't think their mom could have stoped them(though at the same time i do understand that it must be hard to just leav everone and everything behind.. case in a way it's not just as easy as that, you can'tjust leave...)

one thing that both the book and movie fokus on is the boys who are their neighbours. they are so infatuated(sp?) with the girls.. almost obsesed. i do in a way feel for them as well, when they come to the hose on the girls last night and they think they are taking them away from all off that... and then they end up finding bonnie hanging in the basement...

that is a bit different from the movie i think, how they find the girls. casue when the guys find bonnie they gointo shock and they can't really say anything... they just run out of the house iwitha silent scream... therese died before they came, bonnie while they where talking to Lux, mary had her head in the owen while they where on their way down to the basement... another sad thing in thne book is that Lux doesn't die until 25-30mins AFTER the boys run out the house, they forgot that she was in the garage, they where in a state of shcok by then... i don't remember quite but does Mary die in the movie right away? cause in the book she isn't dead when they find her, she is bearly alive... and then she is the hospital for a month.. and her mom only visits her once... i haven't read what happens to her yet..

the book is also very well written in that way, that Eugenides is able to discribe in such a great way... like after the lux, therese and bonnie is gone, and ven though mary is alive, they talk about all of them as if they where all gone... and he discribes the local televition and newspapers obestion with talking and writing about the girls, and how they start out saying correct things, then they start mixing up possestions and names to such a degree that even the boys parents gets angry.

this story really hits you(or can if ou are preseptable(sp?) to it)

You just perfectly summed it up right there. Great movie, terribly tragic. All of the actors did a great job. I only just saw this movie about 2 months ago, and I really want to read the book.

the book is really worth reading! and in the end the book is different from the movie.. only 3 of the 4 remaining girls dies... so mary, she survevies, and it's so sad how they dicriber her "life" after she survievs... like the school has a bench mad ein the memory of cecilia, but since the other girls alos comited suicide, it's deddicated to all of them... all of them who past away, even mary... though mary is "alive"... it so sad the pages about her.. when she comes home again...

p.233:
"Left alone on the other end of those days, Mary lay in her sleeping bag, on the floor of the bedroom she no longer had to share."

though Mary taked her own life as well... after this... i mean, she and her sisters couldn't live with their mom and without 1 sister, i can imagine it must be HARD to try and live without 4 sisters... i feel so sad for mary. that she comes home from the hospital to a empty house. and all her sisters are gone. she is only left with 2 greefstricken parents, and a empty "life". :sigh:
