The way Spike treated Harmony

This is the deal.
You all know how much I love Spike. And I don't really like Harmony. But I have to stand by her side this time. Because Spike was really mean to her. It doesn't matter how bad she is, doesn't matter that she deserves it. And I'm not just saying that for this reason. But because I see a pattern. What Spike did was done to him afterwards. By Buffy. She treated him like crap. And that's what he's done to Harmony earlier. In some place, karma is a bitch. And maybe that's all it is. But I wonder if he realizes that. If he sees what he's done to Harmony and later on it's been done to him. I find it really wrong what he did to Harmony, doesn't matter how much she had it coming. In a way, he had it coming. From Buffy.

Do you think it was wrong how he treated Harmony? Is there a pattern here? Did he deserve to be treated like that by Buffy just because he's done it to another girl? Is this karma?

As much as I want to feel bad for Harmony, it's really hard. I'm tempted to use the excuse, "Well, she is technically evil so it dosen't really matter how he treats her," but I guess the same excuse could be made about spike and buffy. Of course it was wrong the way he treated Harmony, but generally vampires don't hold themselves to the same right/wrong principles as most people do.

Yes, Spike treats Harmony horribly. But honestly, she's dead. And when she was alive, she treated others horribly. Sounds like karma to me. I know that's mean and insensitive... and I do feel bad for her. I mean I watch their interactions and I do say "poor Harmony!" But I don't dwell on it. Their relationship was not serious in any way, shape, or form to me.

Sorry, but, it was kinda funny. Purely because she's a bit of wench. No one can say they didn't laugh when Spike said he loved syphilis more than her.

Other than that, poor thing.

That was sarcasm. ^

He also treats her bad in Angel season 5. And yeah, I totally felt bad for Harmony, like in The harsh light of day when she was crying all alone...
Granted, if I had a Harmony around me I would probably slap her because, hello, annoying, but still, poor Harmony!

I don't find it wrong for the simple fact of that is HOW he treated her yet she kept coming back that is on her at times to me. Like in season five after she had all this time as soon as he shows a hint of interest she comes running back.

I look at it this way Harmony was a very insecure person we saw that in the high school years she was treated the same way by Cordy at times like an unwanted lap dog and that is how Spike treated her as well. She had a choice to stop it she didn't for a while.

The same thing could be said about Spike and Buffy, but most of the fans felt badly for Spike. I really felt bad for Harmony, there was no excuse to what Spike had done to her. If she annoyed him so much, he could have just dumped her. There was no need to keep abusing her over and over.

This isn't meant to defend Spike's treatment of Harmony as much as to simply point out the fact that, as far as Spike probably knew at the time, that's how relationships were. That's how Dru treated him, and Cecily wasn't much better. Though not actually abusive, the "below me" comment wasn't any worse than anything that Spike might have said to Harmony. And, again, that in no way excuses how he treated her throughout their time together in Sunnydale. As for Season 5 of "Angel," he wasn't as much abusive as he just seemed determined not to start anything up with her again (and who could blame him for that, considering what happened the one time that he did try something. Besides which, who wouldn't find it hard to have any kind of a serious relationship with someone who called you "Blondie Bear?" In public. He was probably struggling hard not to stake her.

Exactly my thoughts.

Is it right to take advantage of someone so insecure?

It struck me a bit like the typical highschool fling between the cheerleader and the jock who doesn't really care about her. While I think he didn't treat her particularly nicely, he was used to being harsh with those he was with if you use Drusilla as an example. I think she was only treated that badly because she's so ditzy and has low self esteem. I don't think it was karma as such, I just think he took advantage of her.

We can make all the excuses we want, but at the end of the day Spike still treated Harmony like dirt. I personally don't think anyone should ever be treated that way in a relationship.

I wonder if Spike even realized that Buffy treating him like dirt was similar to the way he once treated Harmony.

Probably not.

I don't really feel bad for Spike as much anymore I mean Buffy treated him like crap but she was in pain at the time. Plus their relationship was kind of messed up. I actually feel bad that no matter how hard he tried her friends would look down on him that I feel bad for but that is off topic.

The point to me is he DID dump her many times but when he needed a little lady company he would go back and she was WILLING. That is what annoys me but like I said she let many people walk all over her and Spike won't be the last.

Well I mean is it his fault she lets him? I don't mean that in a mean way at all but Harmony many times said she didn't want to be with him and acted disgusted by his love for Buffy but she would come running back. I just don't think it is fair to put all the blame on Spike for the reason of Harmony is a free woman to make her choice if she wants to come back to a volatile relationship then okay but I won't put all the blame on him ever for that situation.

I agree with this and the last part is exactly how I feel I don't really take their relationship to serious because they weren't serious. They are not high on my list for all the couples. Was going to rep you but couldn't 😛

when I first watched Season 4 I didn't think much of it because as far as I knew, they were both evil vampires. Then Spike started showing that he was capable of being more than that in Season 5 and now I'm like, wtf Spike. That was just plain mean.

I can't say I ever felt bad for Harmony. She was a b!tch to people when she was alive, and she kept going back with Spike even though she knew he was using her.

I don't feel bad for Spike either in s6 with Buffy. He also knew she was using him and he still wanted to keep their *relationship* going. 😉

And once again, this can be traced right back to the fact that, in both cases, an abusive relationship was the only kind of relationship that Spike had ever been in. As far as he knew, what he did to Harmony, as well as what both Dru and Buffy, and even Angel in his own way, did to him, was perfectly normal.

I never liked Harmony as a vampire. I felt like she was annoying and as vapid as they come, but I did feel sorry for her for the way Spike treated her. It was obvious she really did care about him, and it's sad to watch anyone cry over someone they love being mean to them.

I can easily see why you don't take their relationship seriously, them being villainous vampires and all, but I'm a bit curious as to how you look at humans in similar situations. Over the years, I've seen people both staying in and breaking out of abusive relationships. To me, it feels clear that the largest part - not all, but by far the largest - of the responsibility lies with the abuser. (Even if I also see WA's point about abusive love being the only kind of love Spike knew.)

When it comes to real life it is a completely different story BUT I have known people who are abused and laugh about it make jokes about it and they themselves abuse back so it is a topic that can be taken so many ways. It depends on the situation that is how I look at it but then again I don't really judge because people have their problems and for reasons. I think when it comes to abuse in real life there is just so much behind each different situation.
back on topic for the show I didn't see it as abusive really like you said because they were both vampires and because their relationship was never serious and if it was it was one sided by Harmony.

Yes I sometimes feel sympathetic towards Harmony, but this thread cracks me up because as Spike himself would say "And you're what, shocked and surprised? Do I have to remind you that I'm evil?".

I like Harmony much better as a vampire than human and better on ATS than Buffy. But her self-actualizing affirmations & stupid minions crack me up the most!
