The WB and UPN No More! A New Network Is Born!

I've just heard that the WB and UPN will be no more at the end of the current season and will be merged into the CW network.

The best shows from both of the old networks will be shown along with some new series. The good news is that it looks like Veronica Mars is safe for a third season although no word on Supernatural as of yet, unfortunately. I'm not too worried though as the ratings are pretty good.

Other surviving shows appear to be America's Next Top Model, Beauty and the Geek, Gilmore Girls, Smackdown and Smallville.

No mention of Charmed then? What a pity! 😛

But with all the shows coming through from both networks, Charmed probably has a 1% chance of getting in, but it wont since Alyssa and Rose both have said this is their last season anyway.

But its sad to see the two going. Those two teenage networks didnt end up surivivng the long run but what the hey.

And Supernatural will probably make it through.

But I think that a lot of shows will be changing to new nights which is something im not looking forward to. And I feel bad for the shows that would get renewed but are going to get cancelled because of this merger.
 
Yeah, it is a shame for all the shows with borderline ratings that probably would have made it through if both networks remained.

If anything really good is going to come out of this i would hope it would include Veronica Mars getting a timeslot that isn't in direct competition with Lost. Knowing my luck though they will then move Supernatural into that slot and it will get the axe three episodes into season two! 🙄
 
Wonder if and how this might affect future Joss-related projects? That kinda stuff always seems like a dream, but...

Hard to say. I wasn't putting any money on Joss wanting to work with the WB again but now there is likely to be a new regime there may be a possibility of some developments.

Not holding my breath though, lol! 😉
 
Well it'll be sad to see charmed go but i figured this would be the last season, and already word on this being 7th heavens last season, SO hopefully they bring supernatural on. oh and one tree hill!
 
Too bad, means there'll be less nationwide networks, which means less hours of TV. But as long as they continue Gilmore Girls, I'm not gonna kill anyone.
 
I wonder how this is going to turn out. I don't know if the change is good or bad because there are going to be a lot of shows that are getting cancelled. But if the networks merge does that mean that it's going to be seen in both channels? It's kinda confusing.
 
I think the idea of merging the two networks is pointless. I saw this on the news today and I really don't see the need to merge the networks. I really don't see a benefit. I prefer having two seperate channels.

I would imagine that only one of the two channel frequencies that they are currently broadcast on will be kept active. CW will either be where the WB currently is or where UPN currently is. The other channel will cease to broadcast.

To be honest i wouldn't worry too much about losing one of these channels. From what i have seen they barely have enough good television shows between them to fill one channel schedule! 😀
 
the only show i watch on the wb now is one tree hill. it's such a good show so they better keep it!! i'm prepared to cry if they don't, because i know the ratings haven't been that good this season. but hey, it deserves another chance, it's awesome. at least supernatural will be on next year. i saw the last episode & i think i might start watching it.
 
C'mon CW! Contact Joss, and start groveling.

MONDAY: Right now, the UPN has a block of mostly so-so comedies and the WB has "Seventh Heaven," which is gone after this season, and "Related," a struggling comedy-drama. This is a prime spot for some fresh, bold programming.

Get "Buffy," "Angel" and "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon on the phone and have him whip up one of his patented, obsessively loved cult dramas. Cowboys in space, vampire detectives, superhero gals -- whatever. But making Whedon the cornerstone of this night would be a smart move (and in this iTunes-oriented and DVD-crazed age, there's no doubt The CW would make a mint from ancillary sales of any Whedon drama).

It would make sense to pair up Whedon's new show with the critically acclaimed "Veronica Mars" (which Whedon adores and has guested on). The downside: My head might explode from sheer joy.

It'll(should) be on the current WB station, as they've signed the contract allowing CW to use their airwaves for 10 years.
 
I read about this. It sounds incredibly complicated. I think it will helop though and hopefully get rid of some of the painfully horrible shows these channels have. The only show from either of these channels I watch is Supernatural, and as long as it's kept on I'll be happy.
 
wow, thanks for the heads up. it's always interesting hearing about news like this. and i'm surprised that it's a 50/50 kind of marriage.
