I know I'm way technical on a lot of issues, but after thinking about Cordelia's wish in this episode, it doesn't quite add up.
If Buffy never came to town, couldn't we be certain that there would have to be another slayer there (such as Faith)?
Just because there's no Buffy, does that truly mean no slayer?

Well, if Buffy had never came to Sunnydale, then she would never have died and Faith (or no second slayer) would never have existed, but I don't think that's what you mean. Do you mean ANY slayer, not specifically Faith?

I can only really guess the answer, but I think it was Buffy who was destined to come to Sunnydale, and therefore I don't think any other slayer would have been sent there. And in the alternate reality Buffy did come eventually. Plus, Cordelia did not wish that Buffy never existed, or that she was not the slayer, just that she had never come to Sunnydale. Therefore, in the AU, Buffy was still the slayer, so no other slayer could have came to Sunnydale. If my rambling makes any sense whatsoever.

There's also the fact that the episode is more effective with Buffy as the Slayer.

As BAP said if Buffy hadn't come to Sunnydale then she wouldn't have died at the hands of the master the first time, so technically Kendra and Faith wouldn't have been called. So that would leave the Hellmouth ungarded. Of course once Buffy had died like she did in the Wish, then another Slayer would have been called, but of course the Slayer might not have been Kendra or Faith then, and there is no way to guarantee that they would have gone to Sunnydale.

And don't forget that there was a potential Slayer, Amanda, living on the HellMouth, who could have been activated over the next few years!

Like the others have said, Buffy was still called as a Slayer, and at that time there was only one. So, Buffy not going to Sunnydale meant that the Master was set free and we know the rest 🙂

i thought it was only one slayer per a generation...i never did get how they ended up with three slayers.

The above is a very crude way of showing the 'Slayer Line'.
Buffy is activated at "l" so she is the Slayer. At point 'D' Buffy 'Dies' so another Slayer is Called.
HOWEVER, because Xander 'revives' her, she doesn't completely die, though the 'Slayer Line' has already passed onto its next charge, Kendra.
With Buffy still alive, she has retained the abilities of the Slayer but lost the 'Slayer Line'. This now resides in Kendra.
When Kendra dies, the Line is then passed onto the next Charge, Faith.
Buffy is still alive here, but not the Slayer in the sense she doesn't hold the Line, BUT she is still a Vampire Slayer because thats what she does with her powers.
When Buffy dies again though, she can't pass the Line on because she doesn't have it.
Now, this is where things get a little odd.
When Buffy is brought back from a true death, somehow Willow puts her back in the 'Slayer Line'which creates confusion as now there really is 2 active Slayers, Faith and Buffy.

Too add to that, that is why the first had it's opening as Buffy's return weakened the slayer line.....and why there was just potentials in sunndale.

i think im kinda just repeating what other people have posted here but as i can work it out Cordelia didnt wish that Buffy doesnt exist anymore,she just wished that she hadn't come to Sunnydale.So basically Buffy is still alive and the slayer,she just didnt end up in Sunnydale.And there isn't any other slayer as Buffy hadn't come to Sunnydale and got killed by the master.

Hmm well this doesn't regard the question, but the episode. I thought it was interesting but it was unlike most Buffy episodes so far, it had way less humor which I understand...and I thought vampire Xander was a little lame. It was nice seeing The Master again though, I always like him, but it's rather annoying at how he's just soo powerful that no one can ever kill him. And tough Buffy? Annoying.

I did think it was cool how Cordy was killed so early on in her wish, before watching it I thought she would have ridden the whole thing through, seeing as how it WAS her wish. lol
