... just watched this again and realized they never explain why the girl in science class suddenly has no mouth. "Amy was as freaked out as the rest of us" says Xander, implying that she wasn't behind it. Buffy was next on her list being the first alternate for cheerleading...
Just chalk it up to the Hellmouth?
 
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but wasn't she trying to get rid of 2 cheerleaders so she could get on the squad? Getting rid of Buffy was more because she knew about Amy/Catherine than about the cheerleading thing. The no-mouth girl and Cordelia were the ones Catherine was really trying to get off the team.
 
bb's right. the girl who lost her mouth was supposed to be on the squad, however, if you have no mouth then you cant cheer.

furthmore, in answering your question, you can definitely "chalk it up to the hellmouth."
 
Remember, they show that scene where Catherine-as-Amy is wrapping the doll's face up? If you look at the dolls, you can see the ones she's placed curses on.

I have such fond memories of "The Witch"! It was the very first Buffy ep I ever saw. 🙂

Amy (or her mother) does look freaked - but I suppose it was all part of her act. By then she knew that Buffy and the gang were suspicious of her, and if she wasn't to bat an eyelid the gang would of known for sure. She had to throw them off the scent.

Funnily enough though it didn't throw them off the scent- they still knew it was Amy- they just believed she didn't know what she was doing. Like Subconscious Witch-fu.

And yes people, I had Macho Man in my head for days too, haha.
 
Oh great everyone, now I got the song stuck in my head, lol.

My explanation to this could be that Catherine did her spells at home over the kettle, but they would kick in at random points. So, through all the (attempted) screaming going on, she COULD act surprised because she was really taken off guard. Especially since Buffy just pulled that trick with the blue stuff right before it happened, so even more distraction from her.

What always bothered me, why do you need a kettle for some spells and not for others? Like, Amy had never trouble turning anyone into a rat just like that. And Willow in later seasons could also just pull a magic trick out of her sleeve just like that.
 
I thought that this was if not but one of the best from Season one.
Wow, it wasn't too long into Joss introduced Witchcraft.

I thought the entire episode was hilarious.

If I remember correctly, it may or may not of been before Catherine took possession of Amy's body. I forget the exact details now. It's been awhile since I last watched it. *heads for surfthechannel to rewatch the ep*
 
I agree that Buffy's hypo was because she found out the truth, but I don't think it "hurt" (from Amy's Mom's POV) that the first alternate was severely incapacitated either.

& yeah, what with realising buffy was onto her (when the blue stuff got spilt onto her) and then the no-mouth girl suddenly having no mouth, it probably would have caught her slightly off guard, even though she knew it was going to happen.
 
Does anyone ever notice that when Xander comes to tell Buffy and Amy that they "made" the squad, he tells Buffy that she's the first alternate and Amy's #3. So... When the captain kicks Buffy off the squad after she throws her across the gym (LOL), why is Amy suddenly on the squad? There should have been another girl before her.

Maybe I'm just anal, but this always bugged me. 😛

I was just about to look up the quote to make sure I was right (about her being the third alternate). That's always bugged me too, but maybe the answer to both of these questions is the same--maybe the girl who lost her mouth was the second alternate and for some reason Catherine had decided to get rid of her first (perhaps she predicted that Buffy would give her trouble and was trying to figure out the best way to get rid of her until Buffy started "nosing around" and she had to do something)... Just a thought!

And lol, I catch myself walking around the house quoting the entire scene... "Macho, macho man--ooh hey juice!" hehehe
 
I dont think that she took out Buffy because she was the next replacement. As it was said in the show, I think it was by Buffy, that Catherine was trying to kill her, but she hadn't tried to kill the other 2 girls, she's only robbed them of a couple of their sences.

I'm with everyone when they say that Catherine was just acting surprised to try and throw the Scoobies off her trail when that girls mouth disappeared.
 
At the start of the episode I thought that Amy was actually Amy, just trying to make her mother proud.
I thought that her mother ended up switching bodies halfway through the episode, say once she found out that she didn't make the squad.
Then when Buffy and Giles visit her house, I find out that Amy's mother had switched bodies a few months before hand.
