The Yorkshire Ripper: Should he be let out?

I'm with Harm on this. With major crimes, they should have to experience what the victim went through. On smaller crimes, I really don't give a flying squirrel.

I think that whatever crime you commit on someone, your punishment should be that exact crime back

I was talking about like serious crimes not little things like this.

It´s a good thing that you´re consistant. 😉

Drug dealer like who cares if you deal drugs
Just becasue you don't care doesn't mean that others don't. We´re just gonna go with what you think now?

Alls I'm saying is, an eye for an eye always works

And what fantasy land do you live in?

and is way eaiser to figure out what to do.
Yes, because thinking is such a bad thing...

And no answer about the innocent ones? Just tough luck for them I guess or what?

So rude.
I didn't mean "whatever crime" as in "any crime" I meant "whatever crime" as in "whichever crime" Sorry I'm not some brainiac.
What do you mean what fantasy? I'm serious, an eye for an eye solves everything fairly. And not that thinking is a bad thing, it would just be unneeded and there wouldn't be debates on the subject, they would already know what to do.

I don't think innocent people have anything to do with this. There are innocent people right now probably paying for crimes they didn't do, and there would be innocent people doing the same in my idea of what it should be. The Ripper man should be killed, that's what I think.

That's ridiculous. Conflicts would just go on and on endlessly if everyone had your tunnel vision view of vengeance being the ultimate justice. Punishment is arbitrary violence, putting it under the banner of the state doesn't differentiate it from any other sort of violent behaviour.

I'm all for Harms suggestion.

I like to have sex with men - I should go to a country where gay sex is illegal and my punishement - men have sex with me!

HAHA

Seriously, the idea of the Death Penalty repulses me, I don't ever see that as justifiable.
Also, I disagree with Relic. Prison can be a good place to rehabilitate people.
You go to prison and have some of your freedoms revoked, but I have worked with people who have at one time been criminals, went to prison and through that system came out and now lead productive, legal, lives.

OK, these weren't killers, they were petty thieves, but the system helped give them an education or skill they could further use.

The system in the UK, on principle is a good thing, but to be honest it fails more times then it works so should be revised, however, I do think its the way forward.

See when I think of it I think of it as, if someone has taken a life (or lives) then what gives them the right to live? Why should they be living if other people aren't for no reason but because some person wanted to kill them. And how is my logic unearthly just because it is different from yours?

I hope that last part is not directed at me because I certainly haven't said you're wrong, just that I do not believe it is acceptable.

My personal view on the death penalty is that it makes you no better than the murder by taking a life.

I do think the death penalty is a stretch to far; and isn't that illegal here, anyway?
I think he should be kept in jail. Or if they do release him, I don't think he should be able to be ANYWHERE near people.

Where would you put him?
What about when he needs to buy food/clothing?
What about maintenance on his home?

I have to say, this final comment is the silliest I have ever seen you post.

No I was talking to it was either kin or bluebird I always get them mixed up. And I understand that too, but I don't think it counts if you kill a murderer personally.

No, I don't mean it like...I can't explain what I mean.
I basically mean he shouldn't be allowed out in public. At least not alone.
I'm having trouble explaining things, and really not picking the right word choices. :/

Its easy to get them mixed up, especially recently!

I do get what you are saying, but I just absolutely disagree.
I don't think death is paying penance for a crime. Justice should be seeing someone be punished and see if they can learn from their mistakes and become a better person.

So keep him locked up, indefinitely?

I agree with that on the case of the Yorkshire Ripper.

What's better justice than making him feel the pain his victims felt? He has no right to live and I'd kill him myself if I could. I kill Scott Peterson (he got the death penalty though, so that's good), I'd kill Charles Manson/or his family, I think it's sick that we allow these monsters to live after what they've done.

Ed, I won't disagree entirely with your personal experiences about prison being a good place to try and reform people....they certainly have the time on their hands and their instructors/case workers do have a captive audience! 🙂

Also, you have eye witnessed it through first hand accounts. It's just that I don't feel prison is the right time to do the reform; I believe it should follow after your time served.

Not all convicts are created equal, some are good people driven to desperate measures in order to survive. (though due to our social welfare system, I hope those cases are few).

However, a great deal of them are people who knew that what they were doing was bad and decided to victimize society anyway to buy/enjoy what they could not afford, perhaps due to lack of education or social circumstances. Regardless of environment, from white collar crime to blue collar crime to no collar crime, They chose what they believe is the easy route for immediate gratification, society be damned.

It is up to prison, in my opinion to show them the error of that thinking by punishment of freedom lost, It is not to give them a college education on tax payers dime, tax payers who can not afford to send their own children to college.

They should not be trained at a craft for free either, that gives them an unfair advantage over people who don't commit crimes who have to apply/compete with the rest of lawful society to get that apprenticeship.

Prison is used to change circumstances to favor the probability of a more advantageous 'legal' environment when you attempt reform- but to my knowledge, admittedly limited, your not doing a thing to change ethical view by a relation of consequence. On the contrary it was said on a HBO gang documentary....to semi quote "Prisons not so bad, kid, it's where I got my PHD."

Maybe thats why prisons are busting at the seems?

If they serve their time in a completely crap environment, then are followed closely by social workers who will help them navigate a social network and make contacts to achieve what prison education programs just give them, it gives them a better understanding of a work ethic, appreciation of property (in the form of their own money going to education)...it helps them relate to the real world better. This may even change their view of ethics for the better.

Prison seems to treat people like they are broken and are incapable of making the right decision, that they are victims of society. I see them as victims of their own making. Crime is not environment specific. ( not all poverty areas are crime infested, some have good people. Not all gated communities are pure and good, billionaire embezzlers for instance)

What crime is, in my opinion, is a bad habit or character flaw of putting your own pleasure over everything else. It does not come from society, but rather a lack of concern for it. It comes from the perps own greed.

By doling out punishment for bad behavior you are creating fear of consequence. That was effective in ruling Europe for centuries.

When criminals are out of prison, I believe they should be followed by a case worker for a number of years who will help them with programs and social networking to lift them from poverty if that is a contributor to their initial incarceration. That way they will truly learn to adapt into society, it is easy to be good ( or at least should be) when your in prison

Short of starving, I would not show anymore mercy to a petty thief than any other criminal, even if they are at the poverty level they have made a conscious decision to prioritize their greed for a want above the rest of society. It is not a matter of education so much of a matter of ethics.

I want to read it, but its so long, so I will another day - having said that, I do say the system needs to be revised but it is the way forward - but thats UK not US

If they die, how do they feel the pain?
The methods of death used are as pain free as possible, and also, you know, over.

I don't think the killer should feel pain like the victims. If we inflict pain on someone no matter who he/she is, then we won't be any better. Should we then too be punished? . Should we kill someone for the sake of society safety, or should we just lock the person away, and use the goverments money on keeping him there till he one day finally dies?

Damn, you make malice sound like some kind of game. Miss a turn.

I may as well post my opinion.😉 I'm completely against the death penalty as a punishment. Makes no difference in this thread, since we're talking about a UK case. I think he should stay in jail though. No doubt about that. That's not to say other people can't be rehabilitated successfully, just in this case I think it would be best for everyone if he stayed where he is.

Strangely I'm against the death penalty myself, despite my earlier flippant remark. If I get the time or inclination, i may explain.
He doesn't deserve to be rehabilitated! What makes him deserve to be better? The freak needs to suffer. He KILLED people, if someone killed someone I cared about, I wouldn't want him to get better, I'd want him to suffer for what he's done! Wouldn't you?!
