Their Best since 2005

[Buffyverse Fan]

Well in many ways the Buffyverse died in 2004, but the people behind it have lived on! So what has been their best work since then?

Here are some I've thought of:

1.) Joss Whedon - Dr. Horrible - this one's a no contest for me since I don't think any of Joss' other stuff has come close in the past 5 years.

2.) David Boreanaz - "The Hero in the Hold" (Bones) - I'm pretty furious @ DB too, but there's a thread for that. Anyway, I think as a whole, this episode of Booth talking to a ghost in an abandoned ship was the best showcase of Boreanaz' acting chops in the series. Runner up would be "The Parts in the Sum of the Whole" (Bones) which Boreanaz directed, but the final scene was easily his best performance in years.

3.) Alyson Hannigan - "Come On" (HIMYM) - Lily crying "pause" repeatedly through her stream of tears was one of the strongest performances by an actress in a sitcom I can think of. Hubby & Buffy alum Alexis Denisof guested in this ep along with Amy Acker.

Oh I love that episode of Bones, that really is an amazing ep! I really like the one (not sure what it's called) where Bones and Hodgins are trapped under the sand as well. I think DB is great with the tense emotional dramatics

I am absolutely in love with David Boreanaz as Boothe on Bones! Every single episode he knocks it out of the park. I can't believe he's the same actor from BtVS S1. He improved so much.

I think that Alyson Hannigan has done well on HIMYM, but I don't think that the role is even close to being as good a role as Willow. Then again, I also haven't watched many episodes of HIMYM, so perhaps she has had several standout moments.

As much as it pains me to say this I thin Boreanaz has been the stand out since the shows ended. This is the first year that I have followed Bones on a weekly basis so his acting in that is fresh in my mind. Last week I caught reruns of Angel on SyFy and it struck me how good DB actually can be as an actor. Everything about Angel is different from Booth, and I really think that is all down to DB. When Angel speaks it is in a much heavier tone, you can hear the weight of his struggle. The pacing in which DB delivers Angel's dialogue is very precise and deliberate, very true to the character. Angel's speech is both elegant and efficient, he gets his point across clearly but never gives more away. Compare that with Booth who is much more bright, upbeat and jokey, very rarely have I even heard a trace of Angel in Booth. Booth is your average Joe with a heart of gold, he believes in order and respect, honour and duty. DB's tone when playing him tends to be much more casual, he mumbles under his breath and most of all you can always read him by the expression on his face. Especially when he smiles, his smile lights up his whole face, eyes included.

This may all seem like nothing but I think it would have been very easy for DB to channel Angel when playing Booth, a man with a tough past and bastard of a father, in love with a women he can't have, trying to redeem himself for the lives he took as a soldier by solving murders and essentially "helping the helpless".

I've also been catching Angel reruns on SYFY and David always puts in a strong performance in every episode. Just watched an episode where he is impersonating Jay Don the Vampire and he does it really well. Makes me laugh a lot which is always a positive aswell.

I get the impression she enjoys working on HIMYM far more than on BtVS, like it's not even close. In terms of range, I'm inclined to agree with you, but I'd check out "Come On" (HIMYM) the S1 finale. I'd stack Alyson's performance there against 99% of her BtVS stuff.

I don't know, she is always very enthusiastic about Buffy on her Twitter and often refers to Buffy as "our show", she clearly has alot of affection for the show.

I totally agree with you, but I think that speaks more to his performance on Angel since I'm pretty sure Booth is modeled after Boreanaz' personality (they did build the show around him, Emily got the part because of her chemistry with David).

True, and I agree about Booth essentially being modeled on DB, well at least all his little quirks anyway. Booth seems to have a better understanding of loyalty.

I read an interesting article about the 'death of the american badass' a few years ago. It was a very interesting read lamenting the loss of American males as the 'ass kickers and risk takers' of Hollywood. Americans of the past such as Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, Sly Stallone, Harrison Ford, Charles Bronson, John Wayne etc. etc. etc. have for the most part been replaces in the 21st century with Brits or Australians. Think of the new 'ass kicker' type actors in Hollywood nowadays you think of brits like Christian Bale, or Jason Stathem, and aussies like Russell Crowe or Sam Worthington.

I thought it was an interesting article although a lot of exception could be taken with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon being two examples of badass capable Americans.

The whole reason I bring this up is that although I feel it might not be true as a whole it is true in part. That being said I think Boreanez is one of the few tried and true Action Stars that was both available for TV work and dyed in the wool American (with a capital USA!!!).

I think that's one of the reasons why he has and will continue to do well, there are several people that can do what SMG, or Marsters or Alexis can do. How many can do what DB can do? It's an interesting thought.
