Okay this is a little weird, I know, but my boyfriend and I were discussing baby names the other day (I'm not pregnant yet, so no congrats are in order!).

He's really english, and wants names like Katie, and Joanne and Rebecca... while I have nothing against these names (except he cant pronounce Katie properly because he has a horrible common east end london accent!!) I don't like run-of-the-mill names... I want my kids to have if not completely unheard of names (like mine!) something that not everyone has, as well as them to be related to stuff I like.

He's basically vetoed all of my 'foreign' sounding names (i cant help it, im half foreign, i like foreign names!) so we're down to names that are related to stuff I like...

I've managed to (finally) get him to agree to these:

Scarlett Dawn 🙁named after Scarlett O'Hara, and Dawn from Buffy, who I hate, but I like the way the names sound together- Dawn is a middle name so not used on a day to day basis!)

Lilah 🙁No middle name yet, but Lilah is my fav Angel character- luckily he doesn't know this cuz he's never seen it or else he'd say no)

Alexander 🙁he WILL be called Xander, but again, the other half doesn't know)

Kenta 🙁I hate this name, its named after his fav Japanese wrestler, Kenta Kobashi, but he put his foot down and told me he had to have a name after something he liked!)

So what I want to know, is what do you think of them, but most importantly, what do you think of baby names after stuff you love, and what names would you give a baby???

Honestly i'm 25 weeks pregnant so i've been thinking of baby names for quite sometime and honestly most of the names ive come up with are related to buffy or the stars in some way like for example

Alyson Michelle
Cordelia Marie
Dawn Elizabeth
Anya Elizabeth

or for boys

Joseph Connor
Alexander Liam

and like i said thats just a few off the top of my head i mean i keep trying to think of others but its really hard cause i love these names... so i think its sorta normal... i mean i wouldn't go naming my Daughter Buffy but some people do... its just depending on what you like. Honestly 99.9% of the time someone names their child after someone they really like... You see kids all the time named after soap stars lol. There isnt anything wrong with it alot of the names are unique and pretty and some are very common but catchy I really like some of the names you have expecially Scarlett Dawn

Alyson Michelle is awesome!
Aww congrats!!! 😀

But I know what you mean about everyone being named after soap stars and pop stars etc!

He has a thing where the first boy in his family has to have James as their middle name, and I wanted Jayden, as its a modern twist on an old middleeastern name, but then it'd be Jayden James, which is Britney's kid... its so annoying!!
And everyone keeps saying, oh Scarlett for Scarlett Johanssen?? No for SCARLETT O'HARA!! My heroine!! lol!

And I've managed to get away with Lilah cuz he's never seen Angel and I've never mentioned it as it being an Angel name, but the minute I say a Buffy-related name, even something like Eliza or Alyson, he hates it!! Grrr!!! Men!

Scarlett Dawn is my favourite... I picked that out when I was about 15 or 16, so there was no way he was changing my mind on that one!

Scarlett Dawn does sound really pretty. And fame-worthy, haha

Odd, I LOVE Eliza!
Like AB, I'm also pregnant (but I'm just a tiny bit further on- 28 weeks 🙂) so I've also been obsessing over names. The thing is there are lots of names on Buffy that I like but I'm reluctant to use because, well, they're on Buffy and I don't want my child growing up with 'you were named after...?' even though they weren't. Believe me, being asked 'were you named after Lana Turner?' was the most annoying thing I have ever been asked. Haha.

But I agree with you Hello Cutie, different names are nice. I hate regular-everybody-has-them ones. My name's pretty unheard of- I've never met anyone with the same name- so I guess that feeling comes from that.

But girl names I like are:

Evelyn
Anya (Long before I saw Buffy would you believe? We used to have a teacher in my first year at High School called Anya Griffis. And I was like 'great name!')
Lily
Kristine (No 'CH' spelling; I can't stand that. It reminds me of my friend's old crazy aunt when it's spelt 'Christine' which is not something you want to be reminded of when you look at your child)
Audrey (I know it's old fashioned. But it's different and I like it)

Boys names

Xander (My Mom believe it or not, was rooting for this one. Hehe)
Cole (Heard it on The Sixth Sense and thought 'oooh')
Andy

Hello Cutie
Yay for Xander :P And also Lily.. I wanted that but, no I'm not spelling it properly and its an old woman name apparently!! Btw, my name is Matushka, so I always get.. wow what an unusual name, which is kinda what i want for my kids a little bit!

Speaking as a Kristine here, I'm glad you like my name, lol

Audrey is a beautiful name.

I also love Evelyn. My daughter's name is Evalyn Leigh (also was kind of a shout out to Scarlett! LOL!)
I totally wanted original baby names for my kids too. My son (who is 2 1/2) is Ethan William, which I know, is not original at all. But when we named him that, it was slightly different, but that same year a bunch of people must have thought so b/c it was on the top 10 list the next year 🙁

We have a girl's name picked out for our next baby: Josephine Nicole (we'll call her Joey) but can't decide on a boy name.

I think Xander is an adorable name no matter where it came from. Anya is also beautiful and so is Audrey. My cousin's little girl is name Audrey and even though at first it does sound old fashioned, once you have a little one named that it seems perfectly normal 🙂

Thank you for name approval, hehe. Particularly on the Audrey confirmation. :D
Scarlett Dawn is my favourite of the entire list.

Though I am sure you're heard the saying over here that could, somewhat, apply

Red Sky in the Morning - Sailors Warning

I have some names I will be calling my children when I have one (note my surname is Cooling)

For girls

Stephanie Marie
Aurora Rose
Audrey(as in Hepburn!!!) Janine - can shorten it to AJ

For boys

Auryn Richard
Sebastian Philip
Jerome Charles

The missus will have a say but these are mine - ohh and they are in order of usage.

Aurora Rose: Like Sleeping Beauty?
Personally, I think it's a great idea to name your children after Buffy/Angel characters. Especially if you choose names like Alexander, Anya, or Tara, nobody is gonna know where you get it from and I doubt many of your child's peers will be like, hey are you called that after this and that character from Buffy?

Obviously, the problem is that you can't decide on your own and if your other half doesn't like Buffy, you're in trouble. I guess the fairest thing to do is to give the child two names one you pick and one he picks (like Alexander Kenta?) You'd still have to work out the first name together though.

I'm still years away from this problem, I think/hope, that is IF I even manage to talk my GF into having kids in the first place. But if I do, I'd definitely be looking at Buffyverse-themed names. I like Glory for a girl.

NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! That's how I ended up with my new baby cousin "Maverick Clark" (Don't tell his parents I hate his name though!) I see it as you are the momma, you have ultimate say. The baby's coming out of your body, not his. Use the "hormones" excuse to your advantage in the future and name that baby what you want! I'm so unfair, that's what I did. He had absolutely no say at the end.

I like the themed names, it took me forever to pick out a name for my son, and I had a list about a mile long of names in every combination that I could think of from Buffy. I would suggest a little caution in picking a name that is too extravagant. It's not like mine is that strange here in the US but having to explain 'yes my real name is randi' 'no it's not short for anything' 'no it's not a nick name it's really my name' 'yes I really was named after my dad' etc. can get old. But I can't complain. My name (Randi Dawn) comes from my dad's middle name (randolph) and my mom's first name (donna). It means somehting to me, and that's what I like about it. Pick something (in the future of course) that means something to you. I advise not to go with something too general (I hate the names your bf picked with the exception of rebecca no offense to anyone here). It's your choice.

My son's name: Dylan Thomas. Not very unusual, but I had reasoning with it. Everyone says "so he's named after Bob Dylan, huh?" no. He's actually named Dylan for Jacob Dylan (his son) mainly because I used to have a huge crush on him and fell in love with his last name long ago. And Thomas is the name I was going to be if I had been a boy (Thomas Scott Critten would have been my name. Critten was my great grandfather's name don't make fun!)

A few of my other names:
Zachary Kieran
Riley Scott (for a boy, I don't like Riley for a girl very much)
Cara Belle (I love this name)
Zoe Anne

E
Edmund Blackadder
Hehe, Randi by name randy by nature;)
Kean

I'm such a nerd! when you said you named your son Dylan Thomas I thought 'Oh cool, she named him after the poet'...I'll be in the corner..
I have always loved the name Liam, nothing to do with Angel. Conor was a name I liked until season 3 of Angel and his hell child ruined it for me.

I don't think i would ever call one of my kids a Buffy name...I'm more into traditional Irish names, I sppose I culd pick Anya but use the Irish spelling àine.

I actually didn't realise that Dylan Thomas was a poet until after my son was born! I'm not much for poetry, but I think that it's kinda cool it worked out like that too!

Yeah cause I've never heard that one before either Alister!!! By the way, do you know how akward and gross it is when your (old man) junior high principal comes up to you and proceedes to tell you what your name means in England?

I still like my name though.

You know you love it - and FYI, I love your name too
I'd choose an Irish name for my kids if I get the chance to have any, I like celtic names, Liam is one because I like Angel, Conner is another not because of the charactor but because I like the name, and Moya or in the Irish Maire which looks better!

I have a list in my room of over 150 names I like [Most of them I made up 😛] My favourite name in the whole world is Scarlett-Louise 😀

Mà¡ire is a lovely name. Athough I prefer Aisling for a girl.

That was a tease:)

Not mad on Kenta, but I love Alexander as a name, both the short versions are cool, Alex and Xander

I have such a problem with women who do that, you didn't make the baby alone.

I very highly disagree that the father shouldn't have any say in the name. Parenting should be 50/50 including picking a name! My husband wanted to name our son William Allan III, I didn't, but we compromised and put William as his middle name. Our next child I'd like to have my name as the middle name (Nicole) so if we have another boy, his middle name will be Nicholas.

I really like Riley better as a girls name, as well as Jayden. I also liked Pacey (yes I love Dawson's Creek 🙂 for a girl, but not for a boy. See I like a lot of girl's names, but it took us a long time to agree on a boy name.

mothers and fathers should have a 50-50 say in these matters.
Hey I didn't say he couldn't have ANY say just that I have final say in what my child is named. If I don't like it I'm not gonna name my kid it. Simple as that. I think that's my right as a mom.

And I wasn't going to make my son have "the fourth" at the end of his name. Three generations of a name is enough, I wasn't going to continue that trend.

Yes, I would never name my child anything I didn't like, but I wouldn't name him anything he didn't like either. 🙂

I wasn't big on the whole third thing either, I don't like the junior, third, etc. My husband is Bill, his nephew is William, and then if we would have named our son that he would have either been Billy or Will, eww to both LOL.

You know when I was pregnant with my son the hardest thing was coming up with a name both my boyfriend and I could agree on. He hated about every name I came up with. He was deterimined to name our son James Jr. and I hated it as my dad and my brother both had the first name James. My brother is a James Jr.. I almost named our son myself as he only wanted the name James or Carl. I hated the name Carl (his dad's name). So I was the one who come up with Ryan since that's my last name and agreed to James as a middle name. I still have a list of names I like in case we decide to have another child.

Girl names:

Cordelia
Charmisa
Alexis
Sadie
Bailey
Isabel
Starlet

Boy names:

Lane Tyler (Love this name since I was in high school!)
Connor
Tyler
Cordell
Walker
Chance

These are just a few of the names I like.

i really like the names sadie and isabel :) so i hope you have a girl next time!
I wouldn't name any baby I had after someone. It'd be too confusing. I might give them a really unique name, like D'alexia or Jessamina or maybe a generic name. But I wouldn't name the baby after anyone.

I normally like different names, but we are trying to be very careful with our selection for the children we have.
Our first son, we would like to name him Aidan. If we ever have another it will be Kai. (k-eye). We do not have solid middle names yet.

For our girls we like Lorelai (lor a lie)...and well for now that's it. We both don't have a huge list for girls. I guess second would be Aisha.
So I like as different as different can be but here you can see not too far off. I don't want our kids to have a hard time.

Just a note, Buffy will be used as the middle name for our first daughter. Laugh all you want, but it means a lot to me. 🙂

I don't mind Danika, but not for my kids tho.

Buffy as a middle name is sweet/cute. It's the first name useage that makes me people go 'really...?'. And I have a cousin Aisha- it's a lovely sounding name
