Themed baby names!!

The ones your boyfriend has there are alright, but i think you should have your say in it too! The first one is probably my fave too. Scarlett Dawn. Its pretty🙂

NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! That's how I ended up with my new baby cousin "Maverick Clark" (Don't tell his parents I hate his name though!) I see it as you are the momma, you have ultimate say. The baby's coming out of your body, not his. Use the "hormones" excuse to your advantage in the future and name that baby what you want! I'm so unfair, that's what I did. He had absolutely no say at the end.

I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with you. Parenting should be a matter in which both the mother and the father have equal say. That means that father's shouldn't be excluded from the decision making process, nor should they be allowed to leave it to the mother.

As a fans of Whedonverse shows, I'd like to think each and every one of us believes that both women and men have are supposed to be equals; both in the job market, traditionally dominated by men, as well as at home, traditionally dominated by women.

I'm so jealous of all of you who have either made up your own names or picked some really interesting and different names!! It's an absolute uphill struggle to pick names, cuz while he doesn't mind different names so much with girls, he REFUSES anything I say for boys... and then says things like 'ooh what about Luke and Leia?' I like Leia, but if I can't have names after Buffy/Angel or anything else I like, then he's not having Star Wars!

And I think that the father of the child gets a say in the name, but that the ultimate decision is down to the woman... I mean, if my other half is anything to go by, then if I didn't let him have a say, he'd start calling the child Katie or Jack, and confuse the poor thing!!!! And there's no way on earth I could use Irish names either, even though I think alot of them are so pretty and sound so nice to say (if that even makes sense), cuz the other half is too english for his own good (to the point where he makes comments like im infecting his english bloodline, cuz im mixed race.. git).

Father's should have a say, but not the ENTIRE say.

My hubby wanted to name our son Christopher after his best friend. I never did like the guy all that much. He's a deadbeat and apparently a drug dealer now. But we also have like 7 friends named Chris or Kris and I couldn't take it.

But, I just waited until I was in labor and said, "Fine, we can name him Christopher but his middle name will be Alexander and we WILL call him Alex."
(Sadly, more for Michael J. Fox in Family Ties than Buffy...although NOW he wants us to call him Xander!) Not much Daddies can do when you finish the battle while in labor! And if they do....KICK 'EM OUT OF THE ROOM! :lmao:

So we have Christopher Alexander and Evalyn Leigh. (It's said like regular Evalyn, but I wanted to be able to call her Eva for short. Ticked my Stepfather in law off to NO end. I think it still says Evalyn....maybe MORE than the Evelyn spelling does!)

I LOVE Evalyn Leigh, that is so pretty!
Haha my other half was perusing the site, and he's agreed that Kenta is a rubbish name, and that maybe he was too tough with the whole 'i dont want weird/different/foreign names' thing. Apparently Xander is growing on him too, so fingers crossed I get my own way in the end 😛

I don't think I would ever name my children after characters .

Plus, I also have a long list of names that I can never name my child because of the rotten children in my classes over the years!

I do like the name Olivia. That's my favorite name for a girl, and I think that whenever my husband and I have children, if it's a girl, we may possible name her Olivia.

We finally started pretending our babies were at a bar in college and what would it sound like to have their friend scream their name across the bar to ask if they wanted another beer.

We started doing it after going with our friend to a playground one day and seeing about 12 kids with Biblical names. There was an Abel and Zacharia and Elijiah. The Zacharia I could live with...maybe, if you shorten it to Zach. But most of the others seems awful silly to be shouting in a bar. And, although lots of people like the Biblical names, it seemed like we'd be putting an AWFUL LOT of pressure on the kids to be "good"

I always liked Jason. That was at the top of our boy list for a while. And I liked Jeanine and/or Nina. Most names I liked the longer names that had shorter "nicknames" that we could use instead. Or that THEY could use if they got older and HATED our choice!

On the ones we picked we tried to have at least the shorter name have only 1 of each letter. (Because those letter blocks and stuff usually only come with 1 A or 1 E and it would be more fun to actually SPELL their names.)

And the last thing we had to do was try it out on the "Banana-Fana-Fo-Fana" song to make sure when they did it in school their names didn't make the song have "naughty words".

Hehe I have done the exact same thing!
I always liked the name Seth. I don't think I'd call my kid Seth (if I ever had one) but I like the name. I know way too many people named Chris and David so they're out. Nathaniel has always sounded good to me too....so I don't know.

If I had a girl, I'd really want to call her Zia. We don't do middle names in our family so if it were to ever happen the bloke could pick the middle name (as long as it has flow 😉 )

A friend of mine has a daughter called Elokin (Eli for short), another has a son called Shannon. Oohh.....story...one of my friends has the middle name of Earl and it's the first letter of each of his grandparents' names, which I think is really sweet reason to have a name.

H
Hello Cutie
Aww that Earl story is sweet!
I agree on not letting the father help choose the name.... Me and my boyfriend have both been putting idea's though he really wants to continue with the tradition his family has of naming the first son after him... so it would be Jonathan Clark III which i mean i told him its fine because i cant understand wanting to keep that tradition going but we're also looking into Aiden, we've looked into Alexander.... but its like a big compromise between the two of us and i love it that way...

Yes i may be carrying the baby for 9 months but if it weren't for him i wouldn't have the ability to.... he has been there through every hormonal issue i've had and honestly that is probley as bad as having to deal with the back pain and leg cramps i've been dealing with from the little one lol... so as far as i'm concerned we're both equal... Up until child birth then i have a few up on him... but the point is he's been there for me the entire way so far... he's dealt with my cravings, attitudes, and neediness with no questions asked so he definately has a major say in what we name the baby and how the baby will be raised... I could never not include him on any of it....

He DOES deserve a pat on the back! I have NIGHTMARE stories about hubby during BOTH of my pregnancies!

You know, everyone's giving me flack about saying that. So what. My son is MY child, and I wasn't going to agree with my baby being "Clyde the 4th". That's the only name his dad wanted and there was no way in HELL that my child was going to be named that. So that's why he got no say. Ultimately it's my choice. I'll take into consideration the other party's wants on a name, but I'm going to have final say. There is no reason why I should have to name my son a name I hate just cause his dad liked it and only it. If you don't like it, then don't have a baby with me cause I'll veto your names too if they suck.

Names are so hard. I used to like the name Summer but I currently have a horse called Summer who is a spaz and I wouldnt want to be reminded of her!! I also work with disabled children and some names remind me of the kids who have them. If the kid is good then it doesnt bother me, but we have an Aiden who spits and kicks and hits us so he has put me right off the name! I dont plan to have kids but if I do then there are a few names I like. I actually spend more time pondering horse names then childrens names!! I like Cole and Jayden for boys ( or even Jayden Cole / Cole Jayden) my sisters middle names are Jade and Nicole so it would be a tribute to them but not in an obvious way. For girls I like Lily/Lilah or Ruby, kind of a family tradition, My older sitster is Julie as in a Jewel, I am Gemma, like a gem and my younger sister Rebecca Jade (Rebecca coz my dad wanted to name one) but Jade like the greenstone - we are all named after precious stones. I've always thought that I would have family members names as middle names or something if the other half so wishes. Im not totally deadset on these names so if the dad comes up with a better one I am all for it!

Hello Cutie - I do like Scarlett Dawn, That is a beautiful name.

My next ponies show name will be Serenity (or Angelous if it is evil haha) and my next puppy will be Eve or Dawn if anyone wanted to know haha 🙂*

I think what Radiann is trying to say is that while the father deserves a SAY, they don't deserve to be able to just blatantly pick a name that the mother hates.
I know we had a LOT of problems with that. I liked the name Sam. AND it's his Grandfather's name. But, he had this deal where his Uncle's son got to name HIS kid Sam and we couldn't. In the end, I think the kid's name IS Sam, but they call him Luke. So, it still kind of gets to me.
And then he went nuts with the Chris thing that I just couldn't stand. I shouldn't have to live MY whole life calling my own kid something I didn't like.

I think the BIGGEST problem with men vs women in this little name game is that guys tend to come up with one or two names while the women pour through the name books and then go buy more books. They go over every name they see in their heads. Passing up this one of that one due to someone they knew once in school or mean bosses or boyfriends they had. Men JOKE when they go through the name book.
So, when left with 15 name books and the father still sticks to these two names that THEY want, it's much easier to say they shouldn't get a say because they aren't doing the work OR caring that you don't like the names they picked out.

Like I said, I don't think it's right to shut the father out of the decision making process... BUT it's definitely not right of him to be a stubborn little crybaby. (You'll have one of those soon enough.) He should put in an equal effort in finding an appropriate name for the baby.

H
Hello Cutie
So many of them act like that though... and they veto everything you suggest... but equally, they made the baby as well, they should have a say- as long as both parties are reasonable!

See, I feel quite lucky in that sense. My husband and I are very co-operative as regards to names. We are listening to each other's choices but we're being open enough that when someone suggests a name we really don't like we just basically go 'Bleurgh' and we both agree not to have it. After all, this child is going to have this name forever, and we're going to have to call her it forever so we have to agree.
We've recently done a 'you write your list, I'll write my list' and then we're seeing what matches up and what we like off each list. Through that we've narrowed it down to three names, (one of which is on both our lists would you believe?!) but can't narrow it down further than that at the moment! haha

I think that a mother and a father should choose the name together, because the baby came from both of them. Now, for the naming part, I was named after a book character (Montana Gray from "Hollywood Wives"), and I think it's great. Almost all the names I like are from one character or the other, but I honestly don't know what my guy will say to them once we get married and start a family...

Girl names:
Rosalie
Evelyn
Omaha
Wendy

Boy names:
Hrvoje (a Croatian one)
Liam

For girls:

- Faith Desiree
- Autumn Naomi
- Illyria Micaela [LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ONE]
- Serenity Elizabeth

For boys:

- Xander William
- Landon Henry
- Jared Jerome
- Malcolm Liam

I'm not really sure about the last one...I change what names I like daily, because I'm weird like that.

The Jared Jerome one is because if I'd come out with boy parts, my Mom would've named me Jared Chandler. Jared's a cool name anyways, so...oh, and Jerome is my dad's name. Henry is my boyfriend's dad's name. It's a thing.

Illyria as a first name isn't such a bad idea actually. But did you know that in ancient times Illyria was the name of the area now known as Yugoslavia.

Xander William is awesome!
I have no problem with naming babies after characters/people that mean something special to you. I mean how can it be bad if it comes from a good place? And i LOVE the name Scarlett Dawn - you should definately use that! (yes, because I so have a say in how you name your child)

personally, I've had names picked out for a few years, and in my family it's been a bit of a tradition to let the mother pick the first two names and the father picks the second middle name and obviously gets the last name, so I'd want to continue that if my partner was willing!

So mine are for Girls:
- Lily Anne (I love both the name Lily and the character from BtVS - hence my username! and Anne is my maternal grandmother's name and I'm the only grandchild so i promised her I'd carry her name on in some way, but i want it as the middle name as well cause it's Buff's middle name)
- Abigail Elisabeth (Abigail would be Abby or Gaby and Elisabeth is my mother's middle name) and don't laugh but it's because i LOVED Dear Abby as a little girl 🙂

and for Boys
- Alexander George (you all know he's going to be Xander for short, and George is a family name, but i don't like it as a first name
- Lucas Gilbert (Lucas is from One Tree Hill - oh the shame of my tv choices, but I love the name and the character so.., and Gilbert is my mother's maiden name, again with carrying on the family line!)

I think in some way, the names we choose for our children are one of teh biggest decisions we make for them, so in that way, it needs to be an equal decision between both partners - just as any other decision you'll make as the child grows up will be made by both of you (hopefully!).

Also, I think we hold characters from shows we love close to our hearts so why not share that fun and enjoyment further with our children, and even if they are monstrous children one day at least you'll still love their names! 🙂

I agree that the father shouldn't get to just pick the name, but it should also work the other way round as well, if the mother likes a name the father hates she shouldn't just get final say.

And Im sorry but your second part is just stereotypical bullcrap.

My hubby and I don't actually plan to have any kids, but we have discussed what we'd name our first son because neither of us wants to do the whole Jr. or II thing. I like the name William (his first name, but he goes by his middle name), and we've casually agreed that we both like William David. However, he WILL NOT be called "Bill," "Billy," or "Bubba." Anyone who tries to call him that will be decked. We'll call him William or Will (Willy only when he's very young).

I also like the name Keith. Always have.

Hello Cutie
Or Spike :P I keep threatening that if we have a boy called William I *will* refer to him as Spike, just because I can! ;P
I'm a fan of Lilah, as a name...Its cute for a baby girl and nice for an adult...

Xander is also nice for a boy, better then Kenta anyway and coming from a Japan-inclined person that says a lot ^^'

as for me, my taste in names is quite all over the place, I still haven't picked any favourites so its going to be hell for me when I have to make a decision...But I'm all for the fact of not having avery common name, those are
the best kind...

My real name is Nicky and I have met many other Nicky's, Nikki's, Niki's some of which not only share my name but also my birthday ^^''' (I always have to share my bday, no matter where I go... in high school there were two classmates, one named Nikki, who shared my bday. In my family there two uncles also having their bday at october 4th and when I went to Japan and had my bday over there and was convinced I'd be the only one of the foreign students celebrating there was a French guy named Ivan and a Korean guy named Manny who both had their bday at oct 4th as well T.T)

anyway, the names I like for now are
For a girl:

Anika
Catho
Nuna
Nea
Nana
Natalia
Layne (which is an englishified version of a very common Dutch name: Leen)
Canan (which is a Turkish name and it means 'beloved' and you pronounce it Djana)
Tia
Yelena

and for boys:

Brecht
Daan
Dries (say: Drees)
Koen (say:Kuun)
Lars
Roel (say: Ruul)
Ruben

Good thing I'm not pregnant yet ^^'
But congrats to all who are!!!

I'm going to take that generalized congrats- thank you. Hehe. And I actually know a friend called Lilah AND a friend called Nikki! Haha!
