There is only one pig in Afghanistan. His name is Khanzir.

KABUL — Khanzir likes to lie in the sun. He spends long days sprawled across the grass, sometimes trotting over to greet the people passing by and admiring him. He almost seems to know he is popular, that visitors come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of him.

Khanzir’s celebrity is derived from the fact that he is the only pig in all of Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, as in most Islamic nations, eating pork is considered haram. In fact, one interpretation of that belief forbids even touching the animal. As a result, no pigs are reared or farmed in the country. Besides, the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan is no place for a domestic pig.

“We believe that people and students should be able to come learn about all animals, including the pig,” said Najibullah Nazari, an educational coordinator at the zoo.

Visitors who flock to Khanzir’s enclosure seem to agree.

“Seeing the pig was a fascinating experience for me,” said one passerby, a 23-year-old who gave his name as Asif. “I had never seen such an animal before.”

That's not a very nice name to give him. 🙁 Unless he is a processed pig.

Priceless
Priceless
Khanzir is Arabic for pig (I googled), so he's actually nameless :-(

What a lovely reply! (I need to be nice to the Haggis murderer considering my last(next) post)
There appears to be some people who don't understand the concept about the birds and the bees.
If there is only one pig and if that singular pig is male, then there could not have been any piglets.
I suggest you go and have a chat to GwenRaiden about how the 'birds and bees' concept works. Said for no other reason than my amusement at what little Gwennie Poohs' reply might be.

Pigs have a lot of great qualities besides being tasty, they're friendly, sociable animals and (apparently) make great family pets. So really Afghanistan might be one place in the future where pigs can thrive in domestic bliss alongside humanity.
Until the inevitable overthrowing of their human masters followed by a reign of pig-terror. I've read Animal Farm...

Well the Dodo bird was very friendly and sociable but when they met the human race the Dodo found the humans were quite apt and willing to kill them.

That's probably because they don't convert from animal fodder to meat as efficiently as chicken, otherwise we can keep them as livestocks, breed and slaughter them every year so that their race can thrive like pigs.😀

Ahem..... if you read the article it says he had a ladyfriend pig and some piglets but they were killed by bears......

So, I know my birds, bees and pigs quite well I'll have you know. 😛 Because when a man pig and a lady pig love each other and want to have some piglets, they hop on the good trotter and do the bad thing..... 😉
