I was just curious about something, and I would appreciate your input on the matter. Now, please be assured that I will not take offense by whatever answer that you choose to give, so, please, feel free to speak your mind, just don't get too abusive.

I just attempted to join another forum (nothing pertaining to Buffy or any of Joss' other characters) and I was informed that the name "white avenger" sounded racist and could not be allowed. So, here is my question: When you first came here, before you got to know what a lovable teddy bear that I really am, did you ever think that, just going by my title, that I might be a racist?

(I'll try to put a poll up with this if I can remember how to do it)
 
I didn't think that at all. Had it been "white warrior" things might have been different but with the one you're using it didn't cross my mind at all. Guess it can depend on your (generally speaking) background though.


With the banner though my mind easily goes to the crusades (I'm like that) and I guess that wouldn't be popular with everyone.

Actually, the White Avenger was a character patterned after the Templar Knights, hense the "white," before they became so politically incorect.
Hmm. I don't really know you at all, so heres the point of view from someone who dosen't know you personally! I didn't see the name as racist at all. It never even occured to me the first few times I saw your name around the board. Didn't occur to me until you mentioned it! I guess I can see why someone might take it that way, but my first thought would be 'superhero name!' not 'racist name!'
 
Actually; at first I thought it might have something to do with your go get them approach to Spuffy. Since at one point or another Spike and Buffy have both had almost white blonde hair.

No, it doesn't sound racist at all. Like everyone said, it sounds like you're a good warrior. The opposite of white avenger is "dark" avenger, not "black". So it's far, far from making people think of skins color. 🙂
 
I also was immediately thinking about dark avenger and figured maybe it was like a blond Angel or something 😉 but then I saw your banner and thought it meant something about Spike... but racist? that's ridiculous...
 
I don't know how to put this without sounding offensive, but when I just saw the name and didn't even read he profile, posts or anything, I assumed it had something to do with white hair, like a 'silver surfer'. I don't know know why and I'm certainly not implying you have white hair or that you're old but honestly, that was the first thing that came into my head.
 
I didn't think it was racist. I actually thought it had to do with Angel when Cordy and Doyle used to call him the dark avenger like a different nickname for yourself.
 
Just before opening this thread I looked at the title and thought "you know White avenge could sound racist" and then I opened the thread and was like woooow. Yep I'm pyschic.

But I didn't think you were racist. I just thought you name could be used as a racist name.

"Talan, The White Avenger," was a D7D character that I created back during college, based partially on the Templar Knights.
Honestly, I never really gave that much thought to it. Nor did I really think let my mind entertain that you it could be anything racist, because I've never seen you be anything but nice and welcoming to people on these threads. So, nope...doesn't sound racist at all to me. Just like you picked an avenger type name and went with it. It's all good.
 
Nope. It always reminds me of Hero when Cordelia is pitching her commercial and Angel says he's the dark avenger 😛

I figure since you don't really seem to like him and always talk about taking Bangels "into the light" where Spuffy is that it was something like that, lol.

I had forgotten about Angel ever saying that. I've always thought of him, when I ever DO think of him as "The Dark SCAVENGER,) from his alley/rat feeding days. Either that, or, "Who?"
Lol the name does remind me of something i've seen racist online..i think its a website or something, can't remember but I never thought you were actually a racist even at first cause I just couldn't picture a hardcore racist on a Buffy forum
 
On first reading your user name way back when, yep, the racist connotation sprang to my mind with serious "uh oh"-ness. I was glad to get readily proven wrong, but my first impression was not a good one.
 
Personally, I think you're worrying about this way too much. If someone is going to judge you based on a name that could possibly remotely be thought that you could maybe have chosen it for racist reasons (lol) rather than on the things you do and say, well that's their problem.

Now, if you had chosen "white supremacist", well then that's another story. Or if you went around the board making racist comments. But just because the name has "white" in it? Ridiculous that it's even an issue.
 
I have excluded myself from voting because sadly, I do think of your name as racist.. but only because one of your first posts that I read you said "my name has nothing to do with the white supremacist who calls themselves white avenger also." which of course I had to google and I saw that strapping muscle bound blonde hair blue eyed fella in his white jumpsuit and now that is exactly how I picture you. hahaha. Sorry. But true, nonetheless.
 
I voted "never really thought of it" because I never did, but I would never associate it with racism. It's pretty clear to me you're not a racist.
