There's something about Buffy

Hi, I'm wiritng a dissertation on Buffy and was wondering what do you like about Buffy so much? Is Buffy feminism or post feminism? What is your favourite theme the Buffy series has dealt with? and whats more realistic, Buffy or Dawson's Creek. Basically these are the ??? things I will be writing about so your views and opinions will be much appreciated.

I dont really have an opinion on the feminism issue...mainly cuz Ive never thought about it much...
My favourite theme would have to be Willow's addiction with magic in Season 6, because it was dealt with so well and realisticlly...
I think Buffy is more realistic than Dawson's Creek...ok...Buffy's about things that go bump in the night...but Buffy's more believable...

I think the Buffy series is a type of feminism that emphisizes personal weakness as well as empowerment. This dynamic makes Buffy very interesting. Basiclly I watched Buffy and now watch Angel because both shows have great dialogue and powerful intellegent characters. The preformances by Sarah Michelle Geller, Charsima Carpenter, and James Marsters were very good in Buffy. I especially like Marsters acting skill.

Buffy has honest characters and deals with human issues. It also has the most honest and sympathetic lesbian relationship and portrayals of lesbian characters that I have seen on tv. This is especially important for me since I was dealing with my own sexuality while watching Buffy. It was nice that Tara, Willow, and Kenedy were all normal people with problems who happened to be gay and that their friends treated them normally despite their sexuality. I like that Buffy's lesbian characters are allways human and never sterotypical. Even "Dark Willow" was in character and not a throwback to negative sterotypes.

Buffy is an interesting an progressive show that is not afraid to try new things or explore aspects of the human character that more conventional shows neglect. Although it is fantasy, it is also very real and deals with teen-age and college-age conflicts extreemly effectively.

Buffys writing is great! Not only does it have a great level of drama it also has unexpected comedy!

I thought Dawsons Creek was to fake. And although BtVs has goolies it also deals with feelings and personal lives!

Dawson's Creek is a bit fake for me..Buffy has great dialogues,actors(DB🙂),loved addiction to Magick and dealing with normal problems e.g. death of Joyce..

Buffy is a realistic show, just set in an unrealistic setting. But still manages to be one of the most realistic shows on television. These people go through things in life everyone can relate to. Not that we go out and kill vampires, but what the characters have overcome and dealt with is so much more realistic and true to life than Dawson's Creek, or any other show. It's also inspiring to many women to see a women in such a strong, leadership role.

It's also daring and exciting. We see so many things other shows are to afraid to let us see. We see what people really go through in life. The choices they must make, and the consequences, good or bad, of those choices. Plus, the writing an acting is IMO far above that of Dawson's Creek, or 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, or Everwood, and many many other shows.

Buffy has always and will always be my favorite TV show. The show literally changed my life. The characters are real people, the scripts are amazing dramatically, comedically, and also show the dark side of the world. This show could appeal to anyone, the young the old, anyone. If you like drama, it has it, comedy, it's there, horror, that too. I have grown to love the characters, each and every one of them. For me it is also about being a woman. Buffy the character is this average girl who has to deal with the concept that the world is in her hands. But the show is also about the people that help her in her endless battle to save the world from the forces of darkness. Part of it is woman power. This show has touched my heart and I will forever be in it's faithful following. The show has a lesson for just about every life situation it is real not fake.

*For the record...I love Dawson's Creek too, don't diss it*

I think the most impressive aspect of BtVS is the use of supernatural phenomenon as metaphors for every-day problems. For example, Buffy has sex with her boyfriend (Angel) and he changes into a creep...not an uncommon thing, so I'm told. But he becomes a psycho-vampire killing machine, which doesn't always happen, and Buffy sends him to hell literally, not just "gives him hell" for being a arse...Willow is addicted to magic (power)...this shows what a corrupter power can be, and illustrates the dangers of other addictions and what the consequences are. Buffy fights demons, which are great metaphors for the internal demons we all face...she fights external demons AND internal ones, especially in S6. I also love the pop culture references and in particular the literary ones...it's cool when you "get" the reference...it makes the show that much more textured.
