They volunteered but did they know what they were volunteering for?

So allegedly were lead to believe that all of the actives in the dollhouse voulenteered to be a doll, but what if that isnt the case. Ive been thinking about this ever since the notion of Echo becoming active came about. Its obvious its a bad thing for the company, but at the same time they could just get a new Echo and keep it moving.

My guess on the dollhouse is that they lie and tell these people who want to voulenteer to do good things that they can and they sign up , but they must go through a manditory treatment first before they can work. Then thats where they are tricked and wiped clean of any identity and forced to do this missions.

any thoughts?

I think that they searched for a pretty particular group of people. The more I thought about it I remembered the words Echo said as she picked the "contract" in her hands, she said something like "well, I have no choice, have I?" so it makes me think that she was into some kind of trouble, maybe with the police, maybe a set up the same Dollhouse played on her so to make her believe she was in trouble when she actually wasn't and all they wanted was just another doll.

Anyhow, I think the criteria they use to choose the future "dolls" it is not random, they probably pick based on the dolls they had to put away into the attic or even based on the demands of their clients. However I don't think the dolls are so willing to get in there, and actually more "forced" in a way to do it.

They volunteered? Really? The way I got it they were more pressured into it.
Didn't Caroline even say something along the lines of "It's not like I have a choice"? (not sure, I've only seen every episode once, so my memories are a bit blurry and vague)
